Investigating the effectiveness of emotion regulation skills groups and service user perspectives

Background and aims: People with emotional intensity difficulties experience difficulties regulating their emotions without meeting the threshold for a borderline personality disorder diagnosis. Managing group relationships with a population that experience emotion dysregulation has been linked to chaotic group environments. This study explored the experiences of people living with emotional intensity difficulties and their relationship to other group members and facilitators within STEPPS-EI. It also looked at any other meaning the group may have and the impact on people’s existing relationships. Design and method: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was utilised to explore the idiographic understanding of participants’ experiences. Participants were recruited through a NHS trust and interviewed using a semi-structured interview. These were subsequently transcribed and analysed using IPA. Results: Three superordinate themes emerged: An emotional journey, developing group relationships and developing and understanding self. Conclusion: The findings suggest individuals are on an ongoing emotional journey and experiences within STEPPS-EI becomes a part of this. Relationships within the group environment were impacted by differences between group members and require active management by group facilitators. Joining the journey of other group members appeared to improve people’s understanding of themselves, their ability to regulate emotions and the relationships with others

Inclusion of new LHC data in MMHT PDFs

I consider the effects of including a variety of new LHC data sets into the MMHT approach for PDF determination. I consider the impact of fitting new LHC and Tevatron data, which leads to clear improvements in some PDF uncertainties. There are specific issues with ATLAS 7 TeV jet data and I include a discussion of the treatment of correlated uncertainties and briefly the effects of NNLO corrections. I also present preliminary results with the inclusion of the high precison final ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ rapidity-dependent data.Comment: 6 pages. To appear in proceedings of DIS2017 Worksho

Updates of PDFs for the 2nd LHC run

I present results on continuing updates in PDFs within the framework now called MMHT14 due to both theory improvements and the inclusion of new data sets, including most of the up-to-date LHC data. I present results on updates on PDFs which are obtained within the general framework which led to the MSTW2008 PDF sets. There are some theory and procedural improvements and a variety of new data sets, including many relevant up-to-date LHC data. Effective Heisenberg model and exchange interaction for strongly correlated systems

We consider the extended Hubbard model and introduce a corresponding Heisenberg-like problem written in terms of spin operators. The derived formalism is reminiscent of Anderson's idea of the effective exchange interaction and takes into account nonlocal correlation effects. The results for the exchange interaction and magnetic susceptibility are expressed in terms of single-particle quantities, which can be obtained efficiently in realistic calculations of multiband systems. In the strongly spin-polarized limit, when the local magnetic moment is well-defined, the exchange interaction reduces to a standard expression of the density functional theory that has been successfully used in practical calculations of magnetic properties of real materials.Comment: Accepted to Physical Review Letter

Tackling organised crime through a partnership approach: a process evaluation.

Background In 2010 the Home Office set up an initiative to engage Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) across England and Wales in exploring how local partnership working could be used to more effectively tackle organised crime. Taking boys seriously: Utilising participatory action research to tackle compounded educational disadvantage

This paper presents successive phases of Taking Boys Seriously (TBS), a longitudinal participatory action research initiative bringing together diverse educational bodies and indigenous educators across a highly stratified education system in a contested society. The voices and everyday life and school experiences of adolescent boys are positioned firmly at the centre of a research methodology aimed at re-engaging, empowering, and learning from marginalised boys. We discuss how a collaborative and reflexive process co-produced with a committed steering group has been vital in pursuit of systemic change. New concepts of compounded educational disadvantage, relational education, and an educational ecosystem have been co-theorised and applied in practical ways to counter deficit narratives and support holistic approaches and new partnerships across educational settings in Northern Ireland. Strengths and limitations of our participatory approach are considered, particularly in relation to the role and participation of boys in the research process
