    A non-contact optical technique for vehicle tracking along bounded trajectories

    This paper presents a method for measuring the non-controlled trajectory of a cart along a bounded rectilinear path. The method uses non-contact measurement devices to identify the position of a movable laser scanner working in helical mode in order to reconstruct the 3D model of bridges. The main idea of the proposed method is to use vision systems in order to identify the coordinates of the laser scanner placed on the cart with respect to the global reference system. A fit-to-purpose vision system has been implemented: the system uses three CCD's cameras mounted on the cart to identify the relative rotations with respect to the environment. Two lasers pointers and a laser distance meter are fixed at the starting point of the trajectory and pointing in the direction of motion of the cart, creating three dots on a plane placed on the cart. One of the camera detects the cart displacements and rotations in the plane using a blob analysis procedure. The method described in this paper has a constant uncertainty and the measurement range only depends on the lasers power. The theoretical accuracy of the measurement system is close to 1 mm for the translation along the motion direction and around 0.5 mm along the other two directions. Orientations measurement have a theoretical accuracy of less than 0.1 °. The solution has been implemented for the 3D reconstruction of concrete bridge; preliminary experimental results are presented and discussed

    Effects of putrescine, cadaverine, spermine, spermidine and β-phenylethylamine on cultured bovine mammary epithelial cells

    A bovine mammary epithelial cell line (BME-UV1) and three-dimensional collagen primary bovine organoids were used to evaluate the effects of cadaverine, putrescine, spermine, spermidine and β-phenylethylamine on mammary epithelial cells. Each biogenic amine was diluted in several concentrations (0-50 mM in BME-UV1 and 0-4 mM in primary bovine organoids) in the appropriate saline solution for the cell culture considered. In order to determine the activity of each compound tritiated thymidine incorporation was used. At low concentrations, all amines induced cell proliferation in both cultures. In BME-UV1, spermine significantly inhibited cell proliferation (P<0.001), while the other amines inhibited at higher concentrations (50mM). In primary bovine organoids, β−phenylethylamine significantly (P<0.001) inhibited cell proliferation at 4 mM. Organoids cultured in the presence of all amines, except β-phenylethylamine, had stellate projections indicating intense cell proliferation. Proliferation of mammary epithelial cells was stimulated at low concentrations, while at high concentrations it was inhibited. Our results suggested that the effects of each compound on mammary epithelial cells could be related to the compound itself and not to mediating by the bovine amino oxidase, responsible of the formation of toxic metabolites

    Metacognition, Social Cognition, and Mentalizing In Psychosis: Are These Distinct Constructs When It Comes To Subjective Experience Or Are We Just Splitting Hairs?

    Research using the integrated model of metacognition has suggested that the construct of metacognition could quantify the spectrum of activities that, if impaired, might cause many of the subjective disturbances found in psychosis. Research on social cognition and mentalizing in psychosis, however, has also pointed to underlying deficits in how persons make sense of their experience of themselves and others. To explore the question of whether metacognitive research in psychosis offers unique insight in the midst of these other two emerging fields, we have offered a review of the constructs and research from each field. Following that summary, we discuss ways in which research on metacognition may be distinguished from research on social cognition and mentalizing in three broad categories: (1) experimental procedures, (2) theoretical advances, and (3) clinical applications or indicated interventions. In terms of its research methods, we will describe how metacognition makes a unique contribution to understanding disturbances in how persons make sense of and interpret their own experiences within the flow of life. We will next discuss how metacognitive research in psychosis uniquely describes an architecture which when compromised – as often occurs in psychosis – results in the loss of persons’ sense of purpose, possibilities, place in the world and cohesiveness of self. Turning to clinical issues, we explore how metacognitive research offers an operational model of the architecture which if repaired or restored should promote the recovery of a coherent sense of self and others in psychosis. Finally, we discuss the concrete implications of this for recovery-oriented treatment for psychosis as well as the need for further research on the commonalities of these approaches

L\u2019acidificazione della dieta pu\uf2 essere considerata una misura profilattica simile a quella effettuata con gli antibiotici: mentre gli antibiotici sono prodotti per inibire la crescita batterica in generale, il processo di acidificazione indotto dall\u2019utilizzo dell\u2019acido organico permette la sopravvivenza dei microrganismi pi\uf9 adatti a colonizzare il tratto gastrointestinale (1). In relazione alla sua attivit\ue0 antibatterica e antifungina, il Na benzoato viene attualmente utilizzato come conservante di vari alimenti (2), mentre non esistono riferimenti relativi ad un suo impiego come regolatore di acidit\ue0 nelle diete per suinetti. E\u2019 stato dimostrato che l\u2019acido benzoico riduce la crescita di microrganismi potenzialmente dannosi dell\u2019intestino del suinetto (3) e riduce il pH urinario con una riduzione dell\u2019escrezione di ammoniaca (4). Sulla base di tali considerazioni \ue8 stata condotta una ricerca allo scopo di verificare gli effetti dell\u2019integrazione della dieta con sodio benzoato sulle prestazioni produttive, sulle popolazioni batteriche intestinali e sull\u2019urea plasmatica dei suinetti in post-svezzamento

    Nanotechnology has the potential to manipulate matter at the nanometre scale, creating and assembling substances at a molecular level with new and interesting properties. This has offered opportunities for applications in different sectors. Recently, nanotechnology has received particular attention due to its promising applications in animal nutrition, drugs and nutrients delivery, animal reproduction, disease diagnosis and treatment. In the food sector, nanotechnology is applied to the improvement of food packaging, processing, monitoring and the development of food with new functional properties that can respond to the needs of consumers. This review will focus on the advances of nanotechnology in food sector and animal science with particular attention to animal nutrition. The implications for safety and regulation will be also discussed

    Vehicle sideslip estimation for four-wheel-steering vehicles using a particle filter

    The availability of the most relevant vehicle states is crucial for the development of advanced vehicle control systems and driver assistance systems. Specifically the vehicle sideslip angle plays a key role, yet this state is unpractical to measure and still not straightforward to estimate. This paper investigates a particle filter approach to estimate the chassis sideslip angle of road vehicles. The filter relies on a physical model of the vehicle and on measurements available from cheap and widespread sensors including inertial measurement unit and steering wheel angle sensor(s). The approach is validated using experimental data collected with the research platform RoboMobil (RoMo), a by-wire electric vehicle with wheel-individual traction and steering actuators. Results show that the performance of the proposed particle filter is satisfactory, and indicate directions for further improvement

    A cognitive model of diminished expression in schizophrenia: The interface of metacognition, cognitive symptoms and language disturbances

    The resistance of negative symptoms to pharmacologic treatment has spurred interest in understanding the psychological factors that contribute to their formation and persistence. However, little is understood about the psychological processes that reinforce and sustain the negative symptoms domain of diminished expression. Prior research has shown that higher levels of diminished expression relate to deficits in metacognitive capacity. We propose a more complex model in which diminished expression occurs when impairments in metacognitive self-reflectivity, alterations in higher-order language structure, and cognitive symptoms interact and thus interfere with persons' ability to understand and express emotions in ways others can recognize. Individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (N = 201) provided personal narratives detailing their life story and reflections about their mental illness. Self-reflectivity was measured with the Metacognition Assessment Scale-Abbreviated, and situation models were extracted from participants' personal narratives via Coh-Metrix 3.0, an automated program that calculates language indices. Diminished expression and cognitive symptoms were measured with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Structural equation models (SEM) examined whether self-reflectivity mediated the impact of cognitive symptoms and situation models on diminished expression. Results of the SEM revealed that self-reflectivity partially mediated the impact of situation models on diminished expression (β = -.073, p = .008, ¹95% CI [-0.126, -0.019]). and fully mediated the influence of cognitive symptoms in diminished expression (β = 0.099, p = .001, ¹95% CI [0.038, 0.160]). In conclusion, results suggest that self-reflectivity, linguistic cohesion, and cognitive symptoms may be useful targets for intervention in efforts to treat diminished expression in psychosis
