Intelligent wristbands for the automatic detection of emotional states for the elderly
Over the last few years, research on computational intelligence is being conducted to detect emotional states of people. This paper proposes the use of intelligent wristbands for the automatic detection of emotional states to develop an application which allows to monitor older people in order to improve their quality of life. The paper describes the hardware design and the cognitive module that allows the recognition of the emotional states. The proposed wristband also integrates a camera that improves the emotion detection.- Programa Operacional Temático Factores de Competitividade(POCI-01-0145-). MINECO/FEDER TIN2015-65515-C4-

Short-term energy recovery control for virtual inertia provision by renewable energy sources
The proliferation of Converter-Interfaced Renewable Energy Sources (CIRES), which are inertia-less, and the
gradual decommissioning of synchronous generation have posed
several challenges to the electric power system. This has motivated a complete a shift in the CIRES design and its corresponding control philosophy. Integrating Energy Storage Systems (ESS)
within CIRES enables the implementation of different operating
modes allowing them to provide ancillary services (AS) in a
similar way to the synchronous generation. In order to tackle with
those short-term response AS, such as virtual inertia, fast ESS
(FESS) solutions with high power-to-energy ratio, particularly
flywheels and supercapacitors, are preferred. In spite of several
control algorithms have been proposed to provide such fast AS,
very little research effort has been paid on the proper FESS
energy recovery after the AS provision. This task is particularly
challenging, since supercapacitors must be operated at a certain
state of charge to guarantee that the required AS can be
provided within its operational limits. This paper aims to fill
this gap by proposing a new energy recovery control scheme for
supercapacitors after the provision of short-term AS, such as
virtual inertia. The proposed control is validated via simulations
which clearly highlights its adequate performance.Horizonte 2020 (Unión Europea) 764090Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). España ENE2017-84813-R
Atmosphere-ocean linkages in the eastern equatorial Pacific over the early Pleistocene
Here we present a new set of high-resolution early Pleistocene records from the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP). Sediment composition from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1240 and 1238 is used to reconstruct past changes in the atmosphere-ocean system. Particularly remarkable is the presence of laminated diatom oozes (LDOs) during glacial periods between 1.85 and 2.25Ma coinciding with high fluxes of opal and total organic carbon. Relatively low lithic particles (coarse and poorly sorted) and iron fluxes during these glacial periods indicate that the increased diatom productivity did not result from dust-stimulated fertilization events. We argue that glacial fertilization occurred through the advection of nutrient-rich waters from the Southern Ocean. In contrast, glacial periods after 1.85Ma are characterized by enhanced dust transport of finer lithic particles acting as a new source of nutrients in the EEP. The benthic ecosystem shows dissimilar responses to the high productivity recorded during glacial periods before and after 1.85Ma, which suggests that the transport processes delivering organic matter to the deep sea also changed. Different depositional processes are interpreted to be the result of two distinct glacial positions of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Before 1.85Ma, the ITCZ was above the equator, with weak local winds and enhanced wet deposition of dust. After 1.85Ma, the glacial ITCZ was displaced northward, thus bringing stronger winds and stimulating upwelling in the EEP. The glacial period at 1.65Ma with the most intense LDOs supports a rapid southward migration of the ITCZ comparable to those glacial periods before 1.85Ma
Coils and power supplies design for the SMART tokamak
Agredano-Torres, M., et al.A new spherical tokamak, the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART), is currently being designed at the University of Seville. The goal of the machine is to achieve a toroidal field of 1 T, a plasma current of 500 kA and a pulse length of 500 ms for a plasma with a major radius of 0.4 m and minor radius of 0.25 m. This contribution presents the design of the coils and power supplies of the machine. The design foresees a central solenoid, 12 toroidal field coils and 8 poloidal field coils. Taking the current waveforms for these set of coils as starting point, each of them has been designed to withstand the Joule heating during the tokamak operation time. An analytical thermal model is employed to obtain the cross sections of each coil and, finally, their dimensions and parameters. The design of flexible and modular power supplies, based on IGBTs and supercapacitors, is presented. The topologies and control strategy of the power supplies are explained, together with a model in MATLAB Simulink to simulate the power supplies performance, proving their feasibility before the construction of the system. This work received funding from the Fondo Europeo de Desarollo Regional (FEDER) by the European Commission under grant agreement numbers IE17-5670 and US-15570. Full annual monitoring of Subantarctic Emiliania huxleyi populations reveals highly calcified morphotypes in high-CO2 winter conditions
Datos de investigación en: http://hdl.handle.net/10366/143074[EN]Ocean acidifcation is expected to have detrimental consequences for the most abundant calcifying
phytoplankton species Emiliania huxleyi. However, this assumption is mainly based on laboratory
manipulations that are unable to reproduce the complexity of natural ecosystems. Here, E. huxleyi
coccolith assemblages collected over a year by an autonomous water sampler and sediment traps in the
Subantarctic Zone were analysed. The combination of taxonomic and morphometric analyses together
with in situ measurements of surface-water properties allowed us to monitor, with unprecedented
detail, the seasonal cycle of E. huxleyi at two Subantarctic stations. E. huxleyi subantarctic assemblages
were composed of a mixture of, at least, four diferent morphotypes. Heavier morphotypes exhibited
their maximum relative abundances during winter, coinciding with peak annual TCO2 and nutrient
concentrations, while lighter morphotypes dominated during summer, coinciding with lowest TCO2
and nutrients levels. The similar seasonality observed in both time-series suggests that it may be a
circumpolar feature of the Subantarctic zone. Our results challenge the view that ocean acidifcation
will necessarily lead to a replacement of heavily-calcifed coccolithophores by lightly-calcifed ones in
subpolar ecosystems, and emphasize the need to consider the cumulative efect of multiple stressors on
the probable succession of morphotypes.European Union's Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual fellowshi
Transverse gravity versus observations
Theories of gravity invariant under those diffeomorphisms generated by
transverse vectors, \pd_\m\xi^\m=0 are considered. Such theories are dubbed
transverse, and differ from General Relativity in that the determinant of the
metric, , is a transverse scalar. We comment on diverse ways in which these
models can be constrained using a variety of observations. Generically, an
additional scalar degree of freedom mediates the interaction, so the usual
constraints on scalar-tensor theories have to be imposed. If the purely
gravitational part is Einstein--Hilbert but the matter action is transverse,
the models predict that the three {\em a priori} different concepts of mass
(gravitational active and gravitational passive as well as inertial) are not
equivalent anymore. These transverse deviations from General Relativity are
therefore tightly constrained, actually correlated with existing bounds on
violations of the equivalence principle, local violations of Newton's third law
and/or violation of Local Position Invariance.Comment: 21 pages. Title changed. New section on Newtonian limi

Mediating the Presence of Others: Reconceptualising Co-Presence as Mediated Intimacy
Drawing insight from queer and media studies, this article analyses data from the UK study Adults’ Media Lives. The authors claim that this study reveals the significance of people’s intimate relationships to their media practices, highlighting in particular how people’s media practices mediate the ‘presence’ of others. The authors put forward the concept of mediated intimacy to capture both the cultural intimacy people have with media and the mediation of intimacy by media practices. Mediating intimacy has implications for normative conceptions of intimate life, including the significance of ‘time’ to the values of ‘home’ and ‘work’
TRIB1 regulates tumor growth via controlling tumor-associated macrophage phenotypes and is associated with breast cancer survival and treatment response
Methods: Bioinformatic analysis was used to investigate the link between TRIB1 expression in breast cancer and therapeutic response to chemotherapy. In vivo models of breast cancer included immune-competent mice to characterize the consequences of altered (reduced or elevated) myeloid Trib1 expression on tumor growth and composition of stromal immune cell populations.
Results: TRIB1 was highly expressed by TAMs in breast cancer and high TRIB1 expression correlated with response to chemotherapy and patient survival. Both overexpression and knockout of myeloid Trib1 promote mouse breast tumor growth, albeit through different molecular mechanisms. Myeloid Trib1 deficiency led to an early acceleration of tumor growth, paired with a selective reduction in perivascular macrophage numbers in vivo and enhanced oncogenic cytokine expression in vitro. In contrast, elevated levels of Trib1 in myeloid cells led to an increased late-stage mammary tumor volume, coupled with a reduction of NOS2 expressing macrophages and an overall reduction of macrophages in hypoxic tumor regions. In addition, we show that myeloid Trib1 is a previously unknown, negative regulator of the anti-tumor cytokine IL-15, and that increased myeloid Trib1 expression leads to reduced IL-15 levels in mammary tumors, with a consequent reduction in the number of T-cells that are key to anti-tumor immune responses.
Conclusions: Together, these results define a key role for TRIB1 in chemotherapy responses for human breast cancer and provide a mechanistic understanding for the importance of the control of myeloid TRIB1 expression in the development of this disease
