Joint-SRVDNet: Joint Super Resolution and Vehicle Detection Network
In many domestic and military applications, aerial vehicle detection and
super-resolutionalgorithms are frequently developed and applied independently.
However, aerial vehicle detection on super-resolved images remains a
challenging task due to the lack of discriminative information in the
super-resolved images. To address this problem, we propose a Joint
Super-Resolution and Vehicle DetectionNetwork (Joint-SRVDNet) that tries to
generate discriminative, high-resolution images of vehicles fromlow-resolution
aerial images. First, aerial images are up-scaled by a factor of 4x using a
Multi-scaleGenerative Adversarial Network (MsGAN), which has multiple
intermediate outputs with increasingresolutions. Second, a detector is trained
on super-resolved images that are upscaled by factor 4x usingMsGAN architecture
and finally, the detection loss is minimized jointly with the super-resolution
loss toencourage the target detector to be sensitive to the subsequent
super-resolution training. The network jointlylearns hierarchical and
discriminative features of targets and produces optimal super-resolution
results. Weperform both quantitative and qualitative evaluation of our proposed
network on VEDAI, xView and DOTAdatasets. The experimental results show that
our proposed framework achieves better visual quality than thestate-of-the-art
methods for aerial super-resolution with 4x up-scaling factor and improves the
accuracy ofaerial vehicle detection

Modulation of NKG2D expression in human CD8(+) T cells corresponding with tuberculosis drug cure.
BACKGROUND: Biomarkers predicting tuberculosis treatment response and cure would facilitate drug development. This study investigated expression patterns of the co-stimulation molecule NKG2D in human tuberculosis and treatment to determine its potential usefulness as a host biomarker of tuberculosis drug efficacy. METHODS: Tuberculosis patients (n = 26) were recruited in Lahore, Pakistan, at diagnosis and followed up during treatment. Household contacts (n = 24) were also recruited. NKG2D expression was measured by qRT-PCR in RNA samples both ex vivo and following overnight mycobacterial stimulation in vitro. Protein expression of NKG2D and granzyme B was measured by flow cytometry. RESULTS: NKG2D expression in newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients was similar to household contacts in ex vivo RNA, but was higher following in vitro stimulation. The NKG2D expression was dramatically reduced by intensive phase chemotherapy, in both ex vivo blood RNA and CD8(+) T cell protein expression, but then reverted to higher levels after the continuation phase in successfully treated patients. CONCLUSION: The changes in NKG2D expression through successful treatment reflect modulation of the peripheral cytotoxic T cell response. This likely reflects firstly in vivo stimulation by live Mycobacterium tuberculosis, followed by the response to dead bacilli, antigen-release and finally immunopathology resolution. Such changes in host peripheral gene expression, alongside clinical and microbiological indices, could be developed into a biosignature of tuberculosis drug-induced cure to be used in future clinical trials

Diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging reveals distinct early breast tumor hemodynamic responses to metronomic and maximum tolerated dose regimens.
BACKGROUND:Breast cancer patients with early-stage disease are increasingly administered neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) to downstage their tumors prior to surgery. In this setting, approximately 31% of patients fail to respond to therapy. This demonstrates the need for techniques capable of providing personalized feedback about treatment response at the earliest stages of therapy to identify patients likely to benefit from changing treatment. Diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging (DOSI) has emerged as a promising functional imaging technique for NAC monitoring. DOSI uses non-ionizing near-infrared light to provide non-invasive measures of absolute concentrations of tissue chromophores such as oxyhemoglobin. In 2011, we reported a new DOSI prognostic marker, oxyhemoglobin flare: a transient increase in oxyhemoglobin capable of discriminating NAC responders within the first day of treatment. In this follow-up study, DOSI was used to confirm the presence of the flare as well as to investigate whether DOSI markers of NAC response are regimen dependent. METHODS:This dual-center study examined 54 breast tumors receiving NAC measured with DOSI before therapy and the first week following chemotherapy administration. Patients were treated with either a standard of care maximum tolerated dose (MTD) regimen or an investigational metronomic (MET) regimen. Changes in tumor chromophores were tracked throughout the first week and compared to pathologic response and treatment regimen at specific days utilizing generalized estimating equations (GEE). RESULTS:Within patients receiving MTD therapy, the oxyhemoglobin flare was confirmed as a prognostic DOSI marker for response appearing as soon as day 1 with post hoc GEE analysis demonstrating a difference of 48.77% between responders and non-responders (p < 0.0001). Flare was not observed in patients receiving MET therapy. Within all responding patients, the specific treatment was a significant predictor of day 1 changes in oxyhemoglobin, showing a difference of 39.45% (p = 0.0010) between patients receiving MTD and MET regimens. CONCLUSIONS:DOSI optical biomarkers are differentially sensitive to MTD and MET regimens at early timepoints suggesting the specific treatment regimen should be considered in future DOSI studies. Additionally, DOSI may help to identify regimen-specific responses in a more personalized manner, potentially providing critical feedback necessary to implement adaptive changes to the treatment strategy
PD-1, PD-L1 and PD-L2 Gene Expression on T-Cells and Natural Killer Cells Declines in Conjunction with a Reduction in PD-1 Protein during the Intensive Phase of Tuberculosis Treatment.
BACKGROUND: The PD-1 axis is a cell intrinsic immunoregulatory pathway that mediates T cell exhaustion in chronic infection particularly in some viral infections. We hypothesized that PD-1, PD-L1 and PD-L2 would be highly expressed in untreated tuberculosis patients compared to controls due to their chronic infection and would decrease with successful TB treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Untreated tuberculosis patients (n = 26) were recruited at diagnosis and followed up during treatment. Household contacts (n = 24) were recruited to establish baseline differences. Blood gene expression ex vivo was investigated using qRT-PCR. Flow cytometry was performed to establish protein expression patterns. RESULTS: PD-L1 gene expression was found to be elevated in active TB disease; however, this was not observed for PD-1 or PD-L2. The intensive phase of TB treatment was associated with a significant decline in PD-1, PD-L1 and PD-L2 gene expression. PD-1 protein expression on the surface of NK cells, CD8+ and CD4+ T cells was similar in patients with active TB disease compared to controls but declined with successful TB treatment, with the greatest decline occurring on the NK cells followed by CD8+ T cells and then CD4+ T cells. Granzyme B/PD-1 co-expression declined with successful intensive phase treatment. CONCLUSION: Modulation of PD-1/PD-L1 pathway through TB treatment indicates changes in the peripheral T cell response caused by live Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) followed by the response to dead bacilli, antigen-release and immuno-pathology resolution. The PD-1 axis could be a host drug target for immunomodulatory treatments in the future
Monetary Policy and Financial Asset Prices: Empirical Evidence From Pakistan
Monetary transmission mechanism assumed to be significantly influenced by the effect of policy decisions on financial markets. However, various previous studies have come up with different outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of monetary policy on different asset classes (shares and bonds) in Pakistan. This study using stock price and bond yield as dependent variable and discount rate, money supply, inflation, and exchange rate are independent variables. Data of all variables have collected from 2010 to 2016, and Vector Autoregressive (VAR) technique has applied. The empirical results indicate that there is an impact of monetary policy components on both stock and bond market as an increase in policy rate causes decline in stocks prices and bonds yields. The findings of this study will help the potential investors in making long-term (in general) and short-term (in particular) investment strategies concerning monetary policy.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v7i2.709

Understanding blockchain technology in retail branding for enhancing customer experience and strengthening the retail brand-customer relationship
Abstract. Though the concept of branding used to associate with the manufacturers, over the past decades, to survive the fierce competition in today’s business world, branding becomes indispensable for all business organizations including retail. Branding is important for the retail organization for delivering their brand promises and for increasing their brand equity. The growth of the internet and technological advancement has shaped the way the brand used to communicate. These technological advancements have opened new avenues and opportunities as well as created new challenges for the retail brands.
Besides, in recent years, customers became more concern about society and the environment due to the adverse effects of human and business activities. Most of the customers now want and expect products that have been sustainably procured, produced, transported, and fairly traded. This sustainability concern of the customers is creating pressure on the retailers to act in a responsible way towards society and the environment. But the brands are suffering in spite of trying hard to deliver products in a sustainable way to meet the customers’ expectation, as customers are reluctant to rely on brand’s promises and hesitate to buy due to the lack of availability of authentic and credible information about the products and services retailers offer and is resulting in poor brand loyalty and declined brand equity. The aim of this thesis is to understand customer’s perspective on identifying the implications of blockchain technology for solving these problems of trust on retail brands and explore the way for increasing brand loyalty and enhancing brand equity through elevating the customer experience with the retail brands and strengthening the relationships with the customers.
The conceptual framework is developed based on the theoretical analysis of existing literature on brand and blockchain technology. This thesis is conducted based on a qualitative research design to meet the purpose of the thesis. The thesis followed an abductive reasoning approach throughout the research process. A semi-structured interview was conducted for investigating and validating the developed conceptual framework and concluded with an empirically validated framework. The target population comprises both male and female from different nationalities and fall in the age group 26 to 40.
The empirically validated framework of the research findings reveals that the unique characteristics of blockchain technology have enough potentiality for adding value to the retailers’ branding effort through effective advertising and loyalty programs and efficient inventory management. The research finding further conclude the utilization of blockchain technology in uplifting customer experience and strengthening retail brand-customer relationship for achieving increased brand loyalty and enhanced brand equity
Social and individual features affecting natal dispersal in the colonial Lesser Kestrel
Causes of natal dispersal were studied in an isolated population of the migratory, facultatively colonial Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in northeastern Spain. During a seven-year study, we gathered information on natal dispersal of 751 individuals and on 24 explanatory variables that evaluated individual traits, conspecific cues in terms of colony size, and different ecological and populational features. We examined separately whether or not individuals changed colonies and how far they moved. Dispersal from the natal colony was high (83%), and dispersers covered a median distance of 7225 m (range 112-136 500 m). The probability of natal dispersal decreased with the size of the natal colony and with the distance to the nearest colony, but not with the distance to unoccupied buildings, in the year of recruitment. Moreover, the shorter the distance to the nearest colony, the shorter the distances that individuals dispersed, particularly to large colonies (>10 pairs). These results support the conspecific attraction hypothesis. Accordingly, the probability of recruiting in the natal colony increased with the proportion of philopatric adults, although beyond a threshold individuals were prevented from recruiting by the more dominant adults in a despotic way. The timing of arrival from the wintering grounds was positively related to the probability of colony change, especially in males. To the extent that this variable is related to the phenotypic quality of individuals, it reinforces the idea that natal dispersal is shaped by intraspecific competition in crowded colonies. Males showed lower frequencies of colony change and dispersed shorter distances than did females, as explained by the different role of the sexes in nest acquisition and defense. Our results indicate that natal dispersal is an evolutionarily labile trait simultaneously influenced by ecological, social, and individual features both within and between populations.Peer Reviewe
Inhibiting translation elongation can aid genome duplication in Escherichia coli
Conflicts between replication and transcription challenge chromosome duplication. Escherichia coli replisome movement along transcribed DNA is promoted by Rep and UvrD accessory helicases with Δrep ΔuvrD cells being inviable under rapid growth conditions. We have discovered that mutations in a tRNA gene, aspT, in an aminoacyl tRNA synthetase, AspRS, and in a translation factor needed for efficient proline-proline bond formation, EF-P, suppress Δrep ΔuvrD lethality. Thus replication-transcription conflicts can be alleviated by the partial sacrifice of a mechanism that reduces replicative barriers, namely translating ribosomes that reduce RNA polymerase backtracking. Suppression depends on RelA-directed synthesis of (p)ppGpp, a signalling molecule that reduces replication-transcription conflicts, with RelA activation requiring ribosomal pausing. Levels of (p)ppGpp in these suppressors also correlate inversely with the need for Rho activity, an RNA translocase that can bind to emerging transcripts and displace transcription complexes. These data illustrate the fine balance between different mechanisms in facilitating gene expression and genome duplication and demonstrate that accessory helicases are a major determinant of this balance. This balance is also critical for other aspects of bacterial survival: the mutations identified here increase persistence indicating that similar mutations could arise in naturally occurring bacterial populations facing antibiotic challenge
