    Character Development in Youth Athletes

    Get PDF
The purpose of this synthesis project was to review the literature on factors that influence character development of youth sport athletes. An extensive review of literature was conducted in order to analysis and character development and the leading factors to its development among youth athletes. There are many positives that come along with youth sport participation, and participating in sports has been known to help in the development of character and life skills. This synthesis will review the literature on participation of youth athletes in sports and the role coaches, parents and teachers play in the impact of character development

Sleep Quality and Negative Associated Behaviors of College Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Get PDF
Objective: The purpose of this study was to ascertain what negative behaviors college students are engaging in that could be causing them to have poor sleep. Participants: A total of 134 students completed the online surveys. Methods: An online sleep survey was e-mailed to health science department students at the College at Brockport. Survey questions included demographics, sleep patterns, living situation, and asked them to self-report their negative sleep behaviors. Results: Most students reported to live near campus in off campus housing. Students claimed to average 8-9 hours of sleep each weekday and weekend night. Of the top negative self-reported behaviors students submitted 23 students claimed their sleep loss was due to school work and studying. 18 students claimed poor sleep due to mental issues like stress and depression and 16 students claimed drugs, alcohol, and caffeine related stimulants lead to their poor sleep. Lastly 14 students reported going out with friends or partying lead to their poor sleep quality. The 64 other collected student surveys had a mix of answers that did not lend themselves to a particular larger theme or category. Conclusions: There are many college students that suffer from poor sleep quality overall. This study attempted to shed light on what may be causing these students poor sleep in general. College administrators and school related faculty could use these results in forming prevention strategies to help college students improve their sleep. This better quality of sleep could help improve overall academic performance

Prospects for probing the gluon density in protons using heavy quarkonium hadroproduction

    Get PDF
We examine carefully bottomonia hadroproduction in proton colliders, especially focusing on the LHC, as a way of probing the gluon density in protons. To this end we develop some previous work, getting quantitative predictions and concluding that our proposal can be useful to perform consistency checks of the parameterization sets of different parton distribution functions.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 6 EPS figure

Separation of lymphocytes by electrophoresis under terrestrial conditions and at zero gravity, phase 3

    Get PDF
Electrophoretic mobilities (EPM) of peripheral lymphocytes were studied from normal subjects, chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. A technique to separate B lymphocytes and null cells from non-T lymphocyte preparation was developed. The experiments were designed to determine which subpopulation of the non-T lymphocytes is primarily affected and shows a decreased EPM in chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients

On The Inflaton Potential From Antibranes in Warped Throats

    Get PDF
We compute the force between a stack of smeared antibranes at the bottom of a warped throat and a stack of smeared branes at some distance up the throat, both for anti-D3 branes and for anti-M2 branes. We perform this calculation in two ways: first, by treating the antibranes as probes in the background sourced by the branes and second, by treating the branes as probes in the candidate background sourced by the antibranes. These two very different calculations yield exactly the same expression for the force, for all values of the brane-antibrane separation. This indicates that the force between a brane and an antibrane is not screened in backgrounds where there is positive charge dissolved in flux, and gives a way to precisely compute the inflaton potential in certain string cosmology scenarios.Comment: 9 page

Computational challenges in the analysis of ancient DNA

    Get PDF
High-throughput sequencing technologies have opened up a new avenue for studying extinct organisms. Here we identify and quantify biases introduced by particular characteristics of ancient DNA samples. These analyses demonstrate the importance of closely related genomic sequence for correctly identifying and classifying bona fide endogenous DNA fragments. We show that more accurate genome divergence estimates from ancient DNA sequence can be attained using at least two outgroup genomes and appropriate filtering

On the Strong Coupling Limit of the Faddeev-Hopf Model

The variational calculus for the Faddeev-Hopf model on a general Riemannian domain, with general Kaehler target space, is studied in the strong coupling limit. In this limit, the model has key similarities with pure Yang-Mills theory, namely conformal invariance in dimension 4 and an infinite dimensional symmetry group. The first and second variation formulae are calculated and several examples of stable solutions are obtained. In particular, it is proved that all immersive solutions are stable. Topological lower energy bounds are found in dimensions 2 and 4. An explicit description of the spectral behaviour of the Hopf map S^3 -> S^2 is given, and a conjecture of Ward concerning the stability of this map in the full Faddeev-Hopf model is proved.Comment: 21 pages, 0 figure

Theoretical uncertainties for measurements of alpha_s from electroweak observables

One of the most precise measurements of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(MZ) is obtained in the context of global analyses of precision electroweak data. This article reviews the sensitivity of different electroweak observables to alpha_s and describes the perturbative uncertainties related to missing higher orders. The complete renormalisation scale dependence for the relevant observables is calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order and a new method is presented to determine the corresponding perturbative uncertainty for measurements of alpha_s based on these observables.Comment: v4: Revised version with new tables and figure
