Professor Gender, Age, and “Hotness” in Influencing College Students’ Generation and Interpretation of Professor Ratings
Undergraduate psychology students rated expectations of a bogus professor (randomly designated a man or woman and hot versus not hot) based on an online rating and sample comments as found on RateMyProfessors.com (RMP). Five professor qualities were derived using principal components analysis (PCA): dedication, attractiveness, enhancement, fairness, and clarity. Participants rated current psychology professors on the same qualities. Current professors were divided based on gender (man or woman), age (under 35 or 35 and older), and attractiveness (at or below the median or above the median). Using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), students expected hot professors to be more attractive but lower in clarity. They rated current professors as lowest in clarity when a man and 35 or older. Current professors were rated significantly lower in dedication, enhancement, fairness, and clarity when rated at or below the median on attractiveness. Results, with previous research, suggest numerous factors, largely out of professors’ control, influencing how students interpret and create professor ratings. Caution is therefore warranted in using online ratings to select courses or make hiring and promotion decisions

Self-propelled micro-swimmers in a Brinkman fluid
We prove an existence, uniqueness, and regularity result for the motion of a self-propelled micro-swimmer in a particulate viscous medium, modelled as a Brinkman fluid. A suitable functional setting is introduced to solve the Brinkman system for the velocity field and the pressure of the fluid by variational techniques. The equations of motion are written by imposing a self-propulsion constraint, thus allowing the viscous forces and torques to be the only ones acting on the swimmer. From an infinite-dimensional control on the shape of the swimmer, a system of six ordinary differential equations for the spatial position and the orientation of the swimmer is obtained. This is dealt with standard techniques for ordinary differential equations, once the coefficients are proved to be measurable and bounded. The main result turns out to extend an analogous result previously obtained for the Stokes system
Global regularity criterion for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations involving one entry of the velocity gradient tensor

vector field, for the global regularity of strong solutions to the
three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space, as well as for
the case of periodic boundary conditions
On the existence of traveling waves in the 3D Boussinesq system
We extend earlier work on traveling waves in premixed flames in a
gravitationally stratified medium, subject to the Boussinesq approximation. For
three-dimensional channels not aligned with the gravity direction and under the
Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fluid velocity, it is shown that a
non-planar traveling wave, corresponding to a non-zero reaction, exists, under
an explicit condition relating the geometry of the crossection of the channel
to the magnitude of the Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers, or when the advection

Motion and gravitational wave forms of eccentric compact binaries with orbital-angular-momentum-aligned spins under next-to-leading order in spin-orbit and leading order in spin(1)-spin(2) and spin-squared couplings
A quasi-Keplerian parameterisation for the solutions of second post-Newtonian
(PN) accurate equations of motion for spinning compact binaries is obtained
including leading order spin-spin and next-to-leading order spin-orbit
interactions. Rotational deformation of the compact objects is incorporated.
For arbitrary mass ratios the spin orientations are taken to be parallel or
anti-parallel to the orbital angular momentum vector. The emitted gravitational
wave forms are given in analytic form up to 2PN point particle, 1.5PN spin
orbit and 1PN spin-spin contributions, where the spins are counted of 0PN

Entire solutions of hydrodynamical equations with exponential dissipation
We consider a modification of the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations
and other hydrodynamical evolution equations with space-periodic initial
conditions in which the usual Laplacian of the dissipation operator is replaced
by an operator whose Fourier symbol grows exponentially as \ue ^{|k|/\kd} at
high wavenumbers . Using estimates in suitable classes of analytic
functions, we show that the solutions with initially finite energy become
immediately entire in the space variables and that the Fourier coefficients
decay faster than \ue ^{-C(k/\kd) \ln (|k|/\kd)} for any . The
same result holds for the one-dimensional Burgers equation with exponential
dissipation but can be improved: heuristic arguments and very precise
simulations, analyzed by the method of asymptotic extrapolation of van der
Hoeven, indicate that the leading-order asymptotics is precisely of the above
form with . The same behavior with a universal constant
is conjectured for the Navier--Stokes equations with exponential
dissipation in any space dimension. This universality prevents the strong
growth of intermittency in the far dissipation range which is obtained for
ordinary Navier--Stokes turbulence. Possible applications to improved spectral

Antecedents and outcomes of consumer environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviour
With the intensification of problems relating to the environment, a growing number of consumers are becoming more ecologically conscious in their preferences and purchases of goods. This paper presents the results of a study conducted among 500 Cypriot consumers, focusing on the factors that shape consumer environmental attitudes and behaviour, as well as on the resulting outcomes. The findings confirmed that both the inward and outward environmental attitudes of a consumer are positively influenced by his/her degree of collectivism, long-term orientation, political involvement, deontology, and law obedience, but have no connection with liberalism. The adoption of an inward environmental attitude was also found to be conducive to green purchasing behaviour that ultimately leads to high product satisfaction. On the other hand, an outward environmental attitude facilitates the adoption of a general environmental behaviour, which is responsible for greater satisfaction with life. The findings of the study have important implications for shaping effective company offerings to consumers in target markets, as well as formulating appropriate policies at the governmental level to enhance environmental sensitivity among citizens
Impact of actin filament stabilization on adult hippocampal and olfactory bulb neurogenesis
Rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton is essential for dynamic cellular processes. Decreased actin turnover and rigidity of cytoskeletal structures have been associated with aging and cell death. Gelsolin is a Ca(2+)-activated actin-severing protein that is widely expressed throughout the adult mammalian brain. Here, we used gelsolin-deficient (Gsn(-/-)) mice as a model system for actin filament stabilization. In Gsn(-/-) mice, emigration of newly generated cells from the subventricular zone into the olfactory bulb was slowed. In vitro, gelsolin deficiency did not affect proliferation or neuronal differentiation of adult neural progenitors cells (NPCs) but resulted in retarded migration. Surprisingly, hippocampal neurogenesis was robustly induced by gelsolin deficiency. The ability of NPCs to intrinsically sense excitatory activity and thereby implement coupling between network activity and neurogenesis has recently been established. Depolarization-induced [Ca(2+)](i) increases and exocytotic neurotransmitter release were enhanced in Gsn(-/-) synaptosomes. Importantly, treatment of Gsn(-/-) synaptosomes with mycotoxin cytochalasin D, which, like gelsolin, produces actin disassembly, decreased enhanced Ca(2+) influx and subsequent exocytotic norepinephrine release to wild-type levels. Similarly, depolarization-induced glutamate release from Gsn(-/-) brain slices was increased. Furthermore, increased hippocampal neurogenesis in Gsn(-/-) mice was associated with a special microenvironment characterized by enhanced density of perfused vessels, increased regional cerebral blood flow, and increased endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS-III) expression in hippocampus. Together, reduced filamentous actin turnover in presynaptic terminals causes increased Ca(2+) influx and, subsequently, elevated exocytotic neurotransmitter release acting on neural progenitors. Increased neurogenesis in Gsn(-/-) hippocampus is associated with a special vascular niche for neurogenesis
