    Dynamical systems with time-dependent coupling: Clustering and critical behaviour

    We study the collective behaviour of an ensemble of coupled motile elements whose interactions depend on time and are alternatively attractive or repulsive. The evolution of interactions is driven by individual internal variables with autonomous dynamics. The system exhibits different dynamical regimes, with various forms of collective organization, controlled by the range of interactions and the dispersion of time scales in the evolution of the internal variables. In the limit of large interaction ranges, it reduces to an ensemble of coupled identical phase oscillators and, to some extent, admits to be treated analytically. We find and characterize a transition between ordered and disordered states, mediated by a regime of dynamical clustering.Comment: to appear in Physica

    Phase shifts of synchronized oscillators and the systolic/diastolic blood pressure relation

    We study the phase-synchronization properties of systolic and diastolic arterial pressure in healthy subjects. We find that delays in the oscillatory components of the time series depend on the frequency bands that are considered, in particular we find a change of sign in the phase shift going from the Very Low Frequency band to the High Frequency band. This behavior should reflect a collective behavior of a system of nonlinear interacting elementary oscillators. We prove that some models describing such systems, e.g. the Winfree and the Kuramoto models offer a clue to this phenomenon. For these theoretical models there is a linear relationship between phase shifts and the difference of natural frequencies of oscillators and a change of sign in the phase shift naturally emerges.Comment: 8 figures, 9 page

    Experimental Evidence of Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators

    Experimental observations of time delay induced amplitude death in a pair of coupled nonlinear electronic circuits that are individually capable of exhibiting limit cycle oscillations are described. In particular, the existence of multiply connected death islands in the parameter space of the coupling strength and the time delay parameter for coupled identical oscillators is established. The existence of such regions was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998); Physica 129D, 15 (1999)]. The experiments also reveal the occurrence of multiple frequency states, frequency suppression of oscillations with increased time delay and the onset of both in-phase and anti-phase collective oscillations.Comment: 4 aps formatted RevTeX pages; 6 figures; to appear in Phys.     Knowledge of ghostwriting and financial conflicts-of-interest reduces the perceived credibility of biomedical research

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While the impact of conflicts-of-interest (COI) is of increasing concern in academic medicine, there is little research on the reaction of practicing clinicians to the disclosure of such conflicts. We developed two research vignettes presenting a fictional antidepressant medication study, one in which the principal investigator had no COI and another in which there were multiple COI disclosed. We confirmed the face validity of the COI vignette through consultation with experts. Hospital-based clinicians were randomly assigned to read one of these two vignettes and then administered a credibility scale.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Perceived credibility ratings were much lower in the COI group, with a difference of 11.00 points (31.42%) on the credibility scale total as calculated through the Mann-Whitney U test (95% CI = 6.99 - 15.00, <it>p </it>< .001). Clinicians in the COI group were also less likely to recommend the antidepressant medication discussed in the vignette (Odds Ratio = 0.163, 95% CI = .03 = 0.875).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study, increased disclosure of COI resulted in lower credibility ratings.</p

    Synchronization of Integrate and Fire oscillators with global coupling

    In this article we study the behavior of globally coupled assemblies of a large number of Integrate and Fire oscillators with excitatory pulse-like interactions. On some simple models we show that the additive effects of pulses on the state of Integrate and Fire oscillators are sufficient for the synchronization of the relaxations of all the oscillators. This synchronization occurs in two forms depending on the system: either the oscillators evolve ``en bloc'' at the same phase and therefore relax together or the oscillators do not remain in phase but their relaxations occur always in stable avalanches. We prove that synchronization can occur independently of the convexity or concavity of the oscillators evolution function. Furthermore the presence of disorder, up to some level, is not only compatible with synchronization, but removes some possible degeneracy of identical systems and allows new mechanisms towards this state.Comment: 37 pages, 19 postscript figures, Latex 2

    Applying the Risk of Bias Tool in a Systematic Review of Combination Long-Acting Beta-Agonists and Inhaled Corticosteroids for Persistent Asthma

    Background: The Risk of Bias (RoB) tool is used to assess internal validity of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Our objectives were to: 1) evaluate inter-rater agreement of the RoB tool; 2) determine the time to access supplemental study information; 3) compare the RoB tool with the Jadad scale and Schulz allocation concealment (AC); and 4) examine the relationship between RoB and effect estimates. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of long-acting beta agonists (LABA) combined with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for adults with persistent asthma. Two reviewers independently assessed 107 trials using RoB, Jadad, and AC. One reviewer searched for study protocols. We assessed inter-rater agreement using weighted Kappa (k) and the correlation between tools using Kendall’s Tau (t). Mean differences in effect sizes for RCTs with different RoB were calculated using inverse variance method and random effects model. Results: Trials had good Jadad scores (median 4, IQR 3-4); however, 85 % had unclear AC and 87 % high RoB. The factor that most influenced RoB was the potential inappropriate influence of study sponsors (95 % industry funded). Agreement on RoB domains was fair (k = 0.40) to almost perfect (k = 0.86), and moderate for overall RoB (k = 0.41). Median time to complete RoB assessments was 21 minutes (IQR 14-27) and 12 minutes (IQR 9-16) to search for protocols. Protocols were identified for 5/42 studies (12%); in 3 cases the assessment of selective outcome reporting changed. There was low correlation between overall RoB vs. Jadad (t =0.04

    Toward stronger theory in critical public health: Insights from debates surrounding posthumanism

    The “posthumanist turn” in critical theory comprises efforts to recognize and analyze the interdependence of human existence with non-human entities, including other animals, spaces, and technologies. Scholarship aligned to and debating posthumanism pertains to public health, but has yet to be clearly articulated for a public health audience. This commentary and an appended glossary illustrate the relevance of these ideas for enhancing critical theory in public health.
