The aim of this research is to determine the perceptions of sport managers in Turkey on the concept of sport by means of metaphors. 74 sport managers participated in the research. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. Content analysis method was used for the data analysis. Evaluation of the data showed that sports managers produced a total of 50 metaphors. These metaphors produced were collected in 6 different categories. As a result, it was determined that sport managers expressed the concept of sport by means of metaphors in a very rich and diverse perspective. Therefore, the metaphors determined in this study may lead the sport managers and candidates responsible for the administration of sports services and activities in terms of offering a different perspective on the practice of sport management. © 2018, Sciedu Press.

Tek-A'lı deforme çekirdeklerin genel yapısı, kabuk model potansiyelinden hesaplanan tek-parçacık durumları üzerine inşa edilen dönme bantları ile karakterize edilir. Deforme olmuş potansiyeldeki enerji düzeyleri yörüngenin uzaysal yönelimine bağlıdır. Bu çalışmamızda, bazı Yb-izotopik nadir-toprak çekirdeklerinin enerji spektrumlarından yararlanarak enerji seviye yoğunluk parametreleri belirlenmiştir. Daha sonra elde edilen enerji seviye yoğunluk parametrelerinin detaylı band analizleri yapılarak, deneysel sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmış, özellikle incelenen tek-A'lı büyük deforme potansiyele sahip çekirdeklerin parametrelerinin belirlenmesinde sadece tek bir bandın etkili olamayacağı sonucuna varılmıştır

Determination of genetic diversity among Turkish durum wheat landraces by microsatellites

Wheat landraces represent an important source of genetic variation that can be used for future wheat breeding program. The rich wheat landraces from Turkey have not been sufficiently analyzed genetically. For this reason, genetic diversity and relationship of the landraces must be determined. In this study, genetic diversity of 20 durum wheat landraces collected from different regions of Turkey were determined using 12 highly polymorphic microsatellite (SSR) markers. Genomic DNAs were isolated from ten accessions of all durum wheat landraces and specific regions were amplified with the polymerase chain reaction by using microsatellite markers. Polymorphic bands changed 4 to 9 per each SSR locus and the most polymorphic SSR loci were Wms 18, Wms 155, Xgwm 166 and Stm 578. The dendrogram showed that durum wheat landraces can be divided into two major groups. The coefficient of similarity among all germplasm ranged from 0.35 to 0.74. According to the estimated matrices and relationship among landraces accessions, it was determined that the 46847-47341, 31738-52841 and 31634-47923 were genetically the closest. The farthest genotypes were 52835-1680. The results showed that durum wheat landraces have high genetic variability and microsatellite DNA markers could be successfully employed for revealing the variability.Key words: Durum wheat, landraces, genetic diversity, microsatellite markers

Molecular breeding of durum wheat cultivars for pasta quality

WOS:000457263500003The quality of durum wheat (Triticum durum) is defined as its degree of suitability for pasta production. In order to meet the demand of pasta industry for high quality raw material, existing durum varieties should be first improved in terms of quality-associated genes or quantitative trait loci (QTLs). In this study, important QTLs (Gli-B1 locus encoding.-gliadin 45 protein and Glu-B3 locus encoding LMW-2 type glutenins) that affect cooking quality of pasta were transferred to two durum wheat cultivars (Salihli-92 and Kiziltan-91) through marker-assisted selection (MAS) and backcross breeding. A Canadian durum wheat cultivar with a high quality, Kyle, was used as the donor parent. Each F1 and backcross (BC) plants were backcrossed four times to the recurrent parents, and backcrosses carrying the targeted QTLs were selected by linked molecular markers, i.e. DNA markers, acidic polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (A-PAGE) and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Quality analyses were performed on the kernels and semolinas of inbred backcross lines (BC4F4) and of parental cultivars to assess the effects of the transferred QTLs. Both advanced breeding lines (ABLs) had higher protein contents (14.9 and 15.8%) than their recurrent parents (14.0-14.8%). Also, SDS-sedimentation volumes (32.7 and 28.2 ml) of the ABLs were significantly higher (P< 0.05) than their parents. It was found that the transfer of Gli-B1 locus containing.-gliadin 45 and Glu-B3 locus containing LMW-2 type glutenins to the advanced breeding lines led to increases in their pasta-quality associated properties.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [107O004, COST-FA-0604]This study was partially supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK; Project no. 107O004) within the framework of COST-FA-0604 TritiGen Action

Is video-assisted mediastinoscopy superior than standard mediastinoscopy for mediastinal staging of the patients with lung cancer?

Background: In this study, we aimed to compare standard mediastinoscopy (SM) with video-assisted mediastinoscopy (VAM) for mediastinal staging of the patients with lung cancer in terms of safety profile, complication rates, mediastinal station, and lymph node counts. Methods: Data of 551 patients who were admitted to our clinic between January 2006 and January 2011 with the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and were scheduled for surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Age and sex of the patients and cell type of the tumor were recorded. A total of 361 patients (65.5%) had SM, while 190 patients (34.5%) had VAM. Results: Of the patients, 63.2% (n=96) who underwent VAM and 70.1% (n=218) who underwent SM were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. N2 nodal involvement was detected in 66 of 361 patients (18.3%) who underwent SM and 60 of 190 patients (31.6%) who underwent VAM (p<0.001). Sensitivity was 87% and 79% at VAM and SM, respectively. Major hemorrhage was observed in four patients (1.1%) during SM, while none of the patients in the VAM group experienced such complication (p=0.3). Conclusion: Our study results suggest that VAM is a safe and invaluable method to be used in preoperative mediastinal staging of the patients with lung cancer. We believe that the main superiority of VAM over SM is the prevention of hemorrhage
