Student perceptions and institutional targets: the matches and mismatches of financial bursary support
Bursary support in Higher Education (HE) helps to enable students from widening participation (WP) backgrounds to more fully engage with their university experiences on an equal basis to their peers. But whilst such support is intended to enhance access to HE, aid retention and increase academic success (which can be monitored using existing institutional data), less is understood about student perceptions of this support. To address this gap, studies are required that investigate both the student experience of receiving financial assistance and, crucially, the mode by which that assistance is delivered: the latter impinging directly on student experience. The survey in this paper used a single UK university in which a range of financial assistance is provided, including bursary funds and hardship funds, and where a significant proportion of students are from WP backgrounds. A mixed methods approach was adopted comprising an online questionnaire, in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The findings suggest that receiving financial assistance has a positive impact. However, three areas emerged where the administration and impact of financial support could be improved: pre-financial support to better ascertain the nature and level of bursary and any non-financial complementary support required by individual students; embedded financial mentoring to help students with budgeting and addressing any non-financial issues such as stress, academic performance and low confidence; and post-financial guidance to support students towards longer-term financial independence and stability. Improvements in student support could be achieved through strategic amendments to current provision that addresses the three areas noted but, as this study suggests, perhaps more-so by considering the modality of the bursary provision
Civil Registration and Vital Statistics as Sources of Socio-Demographic Data for Good Governance in Nigeria
Timely and accurate demographic data, resulting from robust Civil Registration and Vital Statistics [CRVS] systems play critical roles in facilitating the realisation of key developmental goals in most countries. A well-functioning CRVS system can afford Nigeria the ambit to gather timely data for evidence-based policy-making. However, just as in many other developing countries, Nigeria’s CRVS framework is plagued by weak institutional linkages resulting to poor quality sociodemographic data. Therefore, this paper focused on the importance of a robust CRVS system as source of quality sociodemographic data in Nigeria, with the objective of situating it within the broader context of good governance. The paper is primarily theoretical and employed the activity theory to examine access to and use of population-based data from the CRVS system for good governance. This paper concludes that the inability to generate actionable and quality population-based data due to Nigeria’s weak CRVS system, as well as non-data driven socioeconomic policies hinders good governance. Therefore, more investments are needed to scale-up Nigeria’s CRVS system and the resulting sociodemographic data should be a priority in driving national policy-making for good governance

A systematic review of the deployment of indigenous knowledge systems towards climate change adaptation in developing world contexts: implications for climate change education
Countries in the developing world are increasingly vulnerable to climate change effects and have a lesser capacity to adapt. Consideration can be given to their indigenous knowledge systems for an integrated approach to education, one which is more holistic and applicable to their context. This paper presents a systematic review of the indigenous knowledge systems (IKSs) deployed for climate change adaptation in the developing world and advances implications for climate change education. A set of inclusion criteria was used to screen publications derived from two databases and grey literature searches, and a total of 39 articles constituted the final selection. Postcolonial theory’s lens was applied to the review of the selected publications to highlight indigenous people’s agency, despite IKSs’ marginalization through colonial encounters and the ensuing epistemic violence. The categories of social adaptation, structural adaptation, and institutional adaptation emerged from the IKS-based climate change adaptation strategies described in the articles, with social adaptation being the most recurrent. We discussed how these strategies can be employed to decolonise climate change education through critical, place-based, participatory, and holistic methodologies. The potential outcome of this is a more relatable and effective climate change education in a developing world context
Pattern of Blood Pressure Indices among the Residents of a Rural Community in South East Nigeria
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the main causes of death in industrialized countries, and are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease in Nigerians, and the risk of CVD associated with hypertension is independent of other risk factors. Despite the high level of awareness of its presence in the developed countries, the level of control is still poor. CVDs tend to be commoner in urban settlements, and it has been hypothesized that rural sub-Saharan Africa is at an early stage of epidemiological transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases (NCD) because of the gradual adoption of unhealthy lifestyles. This study aimed at describing the pattern of blood pressure indices among the hypertensive residents of a rural community in South East Nigeria. A total of 858 individuals comprising 247 males and 611 females took part in the study. 46.4% of the subjects had hypertension. Hypertension was commoner in the males (50.2% vs. 44.8%) (χ2(1) = 1.484; P = 0.223). The males were significantly older and heavier than the females while the females had higher mean values of BMI and WC. The prevalence of hypertension is becoming alarmingly high in the rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa
Heavy metals pollution potentials in the National Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe
Heavy metals pollution potential in National Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe was investigated. Two mining sites located at the east mining pits such as M3O, which is 370 m above sea level and M2O, which is 350 m above sea level were studied. Sequential extraction techniques was utilised to examine the distribution effect of the heavy metals pollution potential on the environment. Twelve representative (six-soil, two-sediment, two-plant and two-water) samples were collected, pre-treated and prepared for this study. The atomic absorption spectrometer was used to analyse the concentration of the metals after the sequential and single-stage extractions were determined. Results showed that Chromium, Arsenic, Cadmium and Copper are more bioavailable in the study area than Lead and Iron. This findings indicate that human, animals and plants are exposed to toxic elements (metals and metalloids)
Spheroidal graphite iron production of furnace roof hangers
The wire rod mill of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited produces coils, wire rods and re-bars of different sizes. Without the furnace hangers, it will be difficult for the mill to continue to operate. This paper describes the production of furnace roof hangers that are required for re-heating furnace using the spheroidal graphite iron (SGI), highlighting the sand-casting process, charge calculation, and the chemical compositions. The facilities within the foundry shop of the steel company are used to produce furnace roof hangers. The available materials used for the casting of the hangers are the pig iron, scrap ends, foundry returns and magnesium. The process of production was performed through the reheating furnace for the heating of 120 m x 120 m x 120 m billets. One ton induction furnace of low frequency was used as the melting vessel. Also, 6 kg of magnesium was introduced in the ladle before the liquid metal was teemed into it. A Spectro analytical instrument was used to determine the chemical compositions of the materials before and after the casting processes. The analysis of the chemical compositions of produced sample of SGI are presented and discussed
Understanding disease control: influence of epidemiological and economic factors
We present a local spread model of disease transmission on a regular network
and compare different control options ranging from treating the whole
population to local control in a well-defined neighborhood of an infectious
individual. Comparison is based on a total cost of epidemic, including cost of
palliative treatment of ill individuals and preventive cost aimed at
vaccination or culling of susceptible individuals. Disease is characterized by
pre- symptomatic phase which makes detection and control difficult. Three
general strategies emerge, global preventive treatment, local treatment within
a neighborhood of certain size and only palliative treatment with no
prevention. The choice between the strategies depends on relative costs of
palliative and preventive treatment. The details of the local strategy and in
particular the size of the optimal treatment neighborhood weakly depends on
disease infectivity but strongly depends on other epidemiological factors. The
required extend of prevention is proportional to the size of the infection
neighborhood, but this relationship depends on time till detection and time
till treatment in a non-nonlinear (power) law. In addition, we show that the
optimal size of control neighborhood is highly sensitive to the relative cost,
particularly for inefficient detection and control application. These results
have important consequences for design of prevention strategies aiming at
emerging diseases for which parameters are not known in advance
Coloration in supraparticles assembled from polyhedral metal-organic framework particles
Supraparticles are spherical colloidal crystals prepared by confined self-assembly processes. A particularly appealing property of these microscale structures is the structural color arising from interference of light with their building blocks. Here, we assemble supraparticles with high structural order that exhibit coloration from uniform, polyhedral metal-organic framework (MOF) particles. We analyse the structural coloration as a function of the size of these anisotropic building blocks and their internal structure. We attribute the angle-dependent coloration of the MOF supraparticles to the presence of ordered, onion-like layers at the outermost regions. Surprisingly, even though different shapes of the MOF particles have different propensities to form these onion layers, all supraparticle dispersions show well-visible macroscopic coloration, indicating that local ordering is sufficient to generate interference effects
