‘Going implicit’: using implicit measures in organizations

Implicit tests are increasingly being used and discussed in the field of Industrial-Organizational psychology. Despite their growing popularity, little is known about the types of implicit tests that exist, how they operationalize constructs, and how to improve their usefulness to predict relevant organizational behavior. We provide a timely contribution to practitioners and scholars who are considering adopting implicit measures in their organizations. By drawing on dual-processing theory, we reviewed the most prevalent implicit tests (Implicit Association Test, Picture Story Exercise, and Conditional Reasoning Test), and evaluated each against the following criteria: how they work, application areas, psychometric properties, perceptions of fairness, and faking potential. Based on prior empirical evidence, we provide ideas to improve these measures, how they may be applied in practice, and which avenues deserve future research. Together, these recommendations may enhance the value of implicit measures in organizations

Epidemiology of urethral stricture at Tygerberg Hospital

Over a 12-month period, 120 consecutive male patients with confirmed urethral stricture were prospectively studied with regard to the epidemiology of the disease. Specific urethritis is the main aetiological factor (45%) and internal and external trauma account for an alarming 38,3% of cases. The prevalence is highest among 40 - 50-year-old coloured men who have had little schooling, multiple sexual partners and who have a low annual income. The incidence can be reduced by upliftment of moral and educational standards of the local population, and by emphasising the potential dangers of catheterisation and instrumentation to m.edical personnel

Determining the radial distribution function of water using electron scattering: A key to solution phase chemistry

High energy electron scattering of liquid water (H2O) at near-ambient temperature and pressure was performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to determine the radial distribution of water, which provides information on intra- and intermolecular spatial correlations. A recently developed environmental liquid cell enables formation of a stable water layer, the thickness of which is readily controlled by pressure and flow rate adjustments of a humid air stream passing between two silicon nitride (Si3N4) membranes. The analysis of the scattering data is adapted from the x-ray methodology to account for multiple scattering in the H2O:Si3N4 sandwich layer. For the H2O layer, we obtain oxygen–oxygen (O–O) and oxygen–hydrogen (O–H) peaks at 2.84 Å and 1.83 Å, respectively, in good agreement with values in the literature. This demonstrates the potential of our approach toward future studies of water-based physics and chemistry in TEMs or electron probes of structural dynamics

Texture and mineralogy influence on durability: The Macigno sandstone

The behaviour of ornamental stones in response to environmental changes or interactions is crucial when dealing with the conservation of cultural heritage.Weathering factors affect each rock differently, depending on structure, mineralogy, and extraction and implementation techniques. This work focuses on the Macigno sandstone, a dimension stone often employed in Tuscany over the centuries. A thorough mineralogical (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction) and petrophysical characterization (i.e. mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray computed tomography, hygroscopic adsorption behaviour, ultrasounds, image analysis and capillary uptake) was made of the sandstone type extracted in the area of Greve in Chianti. The lithotype shows mineralogical (i.e. presence of mixed-layer phyllosilicates) and microporosimetric features, leading to a high susceptibility to relative humidity variation. Moreover, the influence of swelling minerals is related to weathering due to saline solution. The joint application of petrographic and petrophysical techniques allows an understanding of the characteristic weathering pattern of exfoliation (i.e. detachment of multiple thin stone layers, centimetre scale, that are sub-parallel to the stone surface)

A 65-year old man presented at the emergency department with acute shortness of breath, chest pain, cough and haemoptysis. The patient is an ex-smoker with a total of 35 pack years and an extensive medical history, including a serious traffic accident with neurotrauma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, degenerative spine and hip disease, ethylism, a type A aortic dissection and atrial fibrillation. His medication list is extensive and includes a bronchodilator, an antiepileptic, several antihypertensive drugs, pain medication, amiodarone, acetylsalicyc acid and subcutaneous low molecular weight heparin. Chest X-ray showed a rounded opacity in the mediobasal segment of the right lower lobe that could not be seen on previous radiographs (Fig. A). Biochemistry demonstrated an elevated CRP (48 mg/L) and elevated D-dimers (2190 ng/ml). CT thorax was performed to rule out pulmonary embolism. CT thorax showed a sharply demarcated relatively hyperdense mass (mean density on pulmonary artery phase images of 46 HU) with a maximum diameter of 5,5 cm in the mediobasal segment of the right lower lobe abutting the distal vena cava superior (Fig. B). An endobronchial ultrasounded (EBUS) guided biopsy of the lesion was performed. Pathologic examination showed pulmonary tissue with signs of hemorhage and fibrotic changes. No signs of malignancy were seen. An old thorax CT made in another hospital revealed that the location of the mass corresponded exactly with the location of a large bulla (Fig. C). Based on this new information the diagnosis of pulmonary hematoma within a bulla was made
