Crystal Shape-Dependent Magnetic Susceptibility and Curie Law Crossover in the Spin Ices Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7
We present an experimental determination of the isothermal magnetic
susceptibility of the spin ice materials Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 in the
temperature range 1.8-300 K. The use of spherical crystals has allowed the
accurate correction for demagnetizing fields and allowed the true bulk
isothermal susceptibility X_T(T) to be estimated. This has been compared to a
theoretical expression based on a Husimi tree approximation to the spin ice
model. Agreement between experiment and theory is excellent at T > 10 K, but
systematic deviations occur below that temperature. Our results largely resolve
an apparent disagreement between neutron scattering and bulk measurements that
has been previously noted. They also show that the use of non-spherical
crystals in magnetization studies of spin ice may introduce very significant
systematic errors, although we note some interesting - and possibly new -
systematics concerning the demagnetizing factor in cuboidal samples. Finally,
our results show how experimental susceptibility measurements on spin ices may
be used to extract the characteristic energy scale of the system and the
corresponding chemical potential for emergent magnetic monopoles.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures 1 table. Manuscript submitte
Analysis of a fully packed loop model arising in a magnetic Coulomb phase
The Coulomb phase of spin ice, and indeed the Ic phase of water ice,
naturally realise a fully-packed two-colour loop model in three dimensions. We
present a detailed analysis of the statistics of these loops, which avoid
themselves and other loops of the same colour, and contrast their behaviour to
an analogous two-dimensional model. The properties of another extended degree
of freedom are also addressed, flux lines of the emergent gauge field of the
Coulomb phase, which appear as "Dirac strings" in spin ice. We mention

Semiclassical Tunneling of Wavepackets with Real Trajectories
Semiclassical approximations for tunneling processes usually involve complex
trajectories or complex times. In this paper we use a previously derived
approximation involving only real trajectories propagating in real time to
describe the scattering of a Gaussian wavepacket by a finite square potential
barrier. We show that the approximation describes both tunneling and
interferences very accurately in the limit of small Plank's constant. We use
these results to estimate the tunneling time of the wavepacket and find that,
for high energies, the barrier slows down the wavepacket but that it speeds it

The design of CO2-based working fluids for high-temperature heat source power cycles
The application of CO2power cycles is advantageous to exploit high-temperature sources (500-800°C) in the case of available low-temperature heat sinks (15-25°C). However, their efficiency is strongly reduced for higher heat sink temperatures. At these temperatures, due to the low-critical temperature of CO2(about 31°C), CO2is in fact compressed in the supercritical vapor phase rather than in the liquid phase, thus increasing energetic demand for compression. One of the solutions envisaged to overcome this problem is the addition of one or more chemicals that allow having a mixture with a higher critical temperature than the one of pure CO2. This preserve the working fluid compression in its liquid phase, even in the case of heat sinks with temperatures greater than 25°C. This research shows that the addition to CO2of a properly selected chemical component enables to increase the critical temperature up to 45°C with relevant improvements of cycle efficiency with respect to pure-CO2power cycles. In particular, it summarizes the most relevant criteria to be accounted for when selecting CO2-additives. Moreover, the paper warns of the thermodynamic effects deriving from adding to CO2a second characterized by a much more high critical temperature, such as the occurrence of infinite-pressure critical points and multiple-phase liquid-liquid and vapor-liquid critical points. Finally, the paper analyses the thermodynamic properties of a high-critical temperature CO2-based mixture, suitable for these applications, that presents multiple phase critical points. In this regard, it is specified that the paper also aims at filling a knowledge gap in the study of thermodynamic properties of mixtures presenting how do enthalpy and specific volume change in response to pressure variations in the event of liquid-liquid and vapour-liquid critical points. Finally, we present the comparison between performances of power cycles which use, as working fluid, either pure CO2or the novel designed higher temperature CO2-based mixture
Scaffolding School Pupils’ Scientific Argumentation with Evidence-Based Dialogue Maps
This chapter reports pilot work investigating the potential of Evidence-based Dialogue Mapping to scaffold young teenagers’ scientific argumentation. Our research objective is to better understand pupils’ usage of dialogue maps created in Compendium to write scientific ex-planations. The participants were 20 pupils, 12-13 years old, in a summer science course for “gifted and talented” children in the UK. Through qualitative analysis of three case studies, we investigate the value of dialogue mapping as a mediating tool in the scientific reasoning process during a set of learning activities. These activities were published in an online learning envi-ronment to foster collaborative learning. Pupils mapped their discussions in pairs, shared maps via the online forum and in plenary discussions, and wrote essays based on their dialogue maps. This study draws on these multiple data sources: pupils’ maps in Compendium, writings in science and reflective comments about the uses of mapping for writing. Our analysis highlights the diversity of ways, both successful and unsuccessful, in which dialogue mapping was used by these young teenagers
The Kasteleyn transition in three dimensions: spin ice in a [100] field
International audienceWe discuss the nearest neighbour spin ice model in the presence of a magnetic field placed along the cubic [100] direction. As recently shown in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 067207, 2008, the symmetry sustaining ordering transition observed at low temperature is a three dimensional Kasteleyn transition. We confirm this with numerical data using a non-local algorithm that conserves the topological constraints at low temperature and from analytic calculations from a Bethe lattice of corner sharing tetrahedra . We present a thermodynamic description of the Kasteleyn transition and discuss the relevance of our results to recent neutron scattering experiments on spin ice materials
Neonicotinoid binding, toxicity and expression of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum
Neonicotinoid insecticides act on nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and are particularly effective against sucking pests. They are widely used in crops protection to fight against aphids, which cause severe damage. In the present study we evaluated the susceptibility of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum to the commonly used neonicotinoid insecticides imidacloprid (IMI), thiamethoxam (TMX) and clothianidin (CLT). Binding studies on aphid membrane preparations revealed the existence of high and low-affinity binding sites for [3H]-IMI (Kd of 0.16 ± 0.04 nM and 41.7 ± 5.9 nM) and for the nicotinic antagonist [125I]-α-bungarotoxin (Kd of 0.008 ± 0.002 nM and 1.135 ± 0.213 nM). Competitive binding experiments demonstrated that TMX displayed a higher affinity than IMI for [125I]-α-bungarotoxin binding sites while CLT affinity was similar for both [125I]-α-bungarotoxin and [3H]-IMI binding sites. Interestingly, toxicological studies revealed that at 48 h, IMI (LC50 = 0.038 µg/ml) and TMX (LC50 = 0.034 µg/ml) were more toxic than CLT (LC50 = 0.118 µg/ml). The effect of TMX could be associated to its metabolite CLT as demonstrated by HPLC/MS analysis. In addition, we found that aphid larvae treated either with IMI, TMX or CLT showed a strong variation of nAChR subunit expression. Using semi-quantitative PCR experiments, we detected for all insecticides an increase of Apisumα10 and Apisumβ1 expressions levels, whereas Apisumβ2 expression decreased. Moreover, some other receptor subunits seemed to be differently regulated according to the insecticide used. Finally, we also demonstrated that nAChR subunit expression differed during pea aphid development. Altogether these results highlight species specificity that should be taken into account in pest management strategies
Spin Dynamics at Very Low Temperature in Spin Ice DyTiO
We have performed AC susceptibility and DC magnetic relaxation measurements
on the spin ice system DyTiO down to 0.08 K. The relaxation time of
the magnetization has been estimated below 2 K down to 0.08 K. The spin
dynamics of DyTiO is well described by using two relaxation times
( (short time) and (long time)). Both and increase on cooling. Assuming the Arrhenius law in the
temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K,
both and show a clear deviation from the thermal
activated dynamics toward temperature independent relaxation, suggesting a
quantum dynamics.Comment: 4 page
Spin ice in a field: quasi-phases and pseudo-transitions
Thermodynamics of the short-range model of spin ice magnets in a field is
considered in the Bethe - Peierls approximation. The results obtained for
[111], [100] and [011] fields agrees reasonably well with the existing
Monte-Carlo simulations and some experiments. In this approximation all
extremely sharp field-induced anomalies are described by the analytical
functions of temperature and applied field. In spite of the absence of true
phase transitions the analysis of the entropy and specific heat reliefs over
H-T plane allows to discern the "pseudo-phases" with specific character of spin
fluctuations and define the lines of more or less sharp "pseudo-transitions"
