    Exploiting Semi-Directional Transceivers for Localization in Communication Systems

    Localization is the process of determining relative, as well as absolute, positions of communicating devices. Traditionally, the process is conducted using range or directional estimates. In contrast, this research uses weak information to form relatively tight bounds on possible locations of communicating devices. Under certain conditions, achieved location estimation results are strong. However, these results are highly sensitive to the operating conditions of the proposed networks. More significant results were obtained from specialized cases and that the application yields somewhat limited information for a general randomized network topology. Feasible localization results were found to be attainable but not necessarily practical for multiple experiments. This is due to the brute force nature of the implemented localization algorithm which experiences an exponential increase in runtime as the number of nodes increases

    That Which They Will Not See: Climate Denial as a Vector of Epistemological Crisis in the Contemporary United States

Available on open access from Routledge via the DOI in this recordClimate denial continues as a cultural epistemology for anthropogenic climate change in the United States, despite worsening impacts. This article offers an ethnographic account of rural areas in three states in the southern US – Arizona, Louisiana, and Missouri – based on long-term participant observation and interview data. Engaging with the literature on agnotology, the social construction of ignorance, the argument is made that this literature as it pertains to climate denial does not go far enough in accounting for the persistence of the rejection of climate science. Theoretically drawing from anthropological work on the incommensurability of paradigms, the argument is based on a tripartite construction of denial as produced through an interaction of a cultural norm of radical empiricism, a political-media ecosystem funded by fossil fuel companies, and a cosmological schema derived from conservative white evangelicalism.     2D and 3D Analysis of a Torus-unstable Quiet-Sun Prominence Eruption

    The role of ideal-MHD instabilities in a prominence eruption is explored through 2D and 3D kinematic analysis of an event observed with the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory between 22:06 UT on 2013 February 26 and 04:06 UT on 2013 February 27. A series of 3D radial slits are used to extract height–time profiles ranging from the midpoint of the prominence leading edge to the southeastern footpoint. These height–time profiles are fit with a kinematic model combining linear and nonlinear rise phases, returning the nonlinear onset time (t nl) as a free parameter. A range (1.5–4.0) of temporal power indices (i.e., β in the nonlinear term (t−tnl)β{(t-{t}_{\mathrm{nl}})}^{\beta }) are considered to prevent prescribing any particular form of nonlinear kinematics. The decay index experienced by the leading edge is explored using a radial profile of the transverse magnetic field from a PFSS extrapolation above the prominence region. Critical decay indices are extracted for each slit at their own specific values of height at the nonlinear phase onset (h(t nl)) and filtered to focus on instances resulting from kinematic fits with χred2<2{\chi }_{\mathrm{red}}^{2}\lt 2 (restricting β to 1.9–3.9). Based on this measure of the critical decay index along the prominence structure, we find strong evidence that the torus instability is the mechanism driving this prominence eruption. Defining any single decay index as being "critical" is not that critical because there is no single canonical or critical value of decay index through which all eruptions must succeed

    Small mirrors do the trick: A simple, but effective method to study mirror self-recognition in chimpanzees

    Mirror self-recognition (MSR) is considered an indicator of self-awareness. Standardized mirror tests reveal compelling evidence for MSR in a few non-human species, including all great apes. However, substantial inter-individual variation of MSR within species resulted in an ongoing methodological controversy, questioning the appropriateness of standard MSR tests for cross-species comparisons. Lack of motivation, in particular, is discussed as one possible cause for false negative results. Here, we compare the spontaneous behavioral response of 47 zoo-housed chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to (i) standard body-sized, stationary mirrors and (ii) small, portable hand mirrors. We predicted that the monopolizability and maneuverability of small mirrors increase the chances of identifying MSR across a larger proportion of individuals. Chimpanzees both revealed a substantially higher frequency of general mirror-related behaviors and engaged in significantly more and longer behaviors specifically indicating MSR when provided with small mirrors compared to a large mirror. Handheld mirrors provide a more sensitive measure for MSR within and likely between primate species than the traditional large mirrors, and thereby are a potentially valuable tool for studying self-awareness across species

    The application of high temporal resolution data in river catchment modelling and management strategies

    Modelling changes in river water quality, and by extension developing river management strategies, has historically been reliant on empirical data collected at relatively low temporal resolutions. With access to data collected at higher temporal resolutions, this study investigated how these new dataset types could be employed to assess the precision and accuracy of two phosphorus (P) load apportionment models (LAMs) developed on lower resolution empirical data. Predictions were made of point and diffuse sources of P across ten different sampling scenarios. Sampling resolution ranged from hourly to monthly through the use of 2000 newly created datasets from high frequency P and discharge data collected from a eutrophic river draining a 9.48 km2 catchment. Outputs from the two LAMs were found to differ significantly in the P load apportionment (51.4% versus 4.6% from point sources) with reducing precision and increasing bias as sampling frequency decreased. Residual analysis identified a large deviation from observed data at high flows. This deviation affected the apportionment of P from diffuse sources in particular. The study demonstrated the potential problems in developing empirical models such as LAMs based on temporally relatively poorly-resolved data (the level of resolution that is available for the majority of catchments). When these models are applied ad hoc and outside an expert modelling framework using extant datasets of lower resolution, interpretations of their outputs could potentially reduce the effectiveness of management decisions aimed at improving water quality

    Über die letzten Jahrzehnte haben sich unsere Kenntnisse über die vokalen Kommunikationssysteme bei Menschenaffen enorm erweitert und aber auch das Verständnis zur Evolution des Kommunikationssystems unserer eigenen Spezies stark gewandelt. Allein nur die Studien zur Kommunikation unter Schim- pansen haben gezeigt, dass es eine Reihe von gruppenspezifische und kontexts- pezifischen Lautäußerungen gibt. Es ist klar geworden, dass die Komplexität der Strukturen und ihrer kommunikativen wie sozialen Funktionen lange unterschätzt wurde und selbst auch die akustischen und artikulatorischen Vorgänge noch nicht vollständig verstanden sind. Die dramatische Abnahme der verbliebenen Popula- tionen ist allerdings wenig hilfreich und wirkt sich ebenso auf die Bedingungen für deren Erforschung und die Anforderung (z.B. an Software) an sie aus. Für diesen Beitrag werden anhand einer aktuellen Studie zu akustischen und artikulatorischen Charakteristika von Vokalisierungen bei freilebenden Schimpansen im Taï National Forest (Elfenbeinküste) grundlegende Probleme analysiert wie sie sich aus Sicht der Erforschung des Sprechens beim Menschen ergeben. Das vorgestellte Projekt fokussiert die individuelle und gruppenspezifische Ausprägung kontextsensitiver Laute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der beobachtbaren oralen Artikulation. Hierbei möchten wir gerade die Desiderata im methodisch-technischen Bereich (Datenerhebung, Transkription und Annotation, akustische und artikulatorische Pa- rametrisierung von Audio und Video, Datenverwaltung) aufzeigen und versuchen Lösungsvorschläge zu unterbreiten, aber auch Hilfe in der Community suche

    Higher fundamental frequency in bonobos is explained by larynx morphology

    Acoustic signals, shaped by natural and sexual selection, reveal ecological and social selection pressures [1]. Examining acoustic signals together with morphology can be particularly revealing. But this approach has rarely been applied to primates, where clues to the evolutionary trajectory of human communication may be found. Across vertebrate species, there is a close relationship between body size and acoustic parameters, such as formant dispersion and fundamental frequency (f0). Deviations from this acoustic allometry usually produce calls with a lower f0 than expected for a given body size, often due to morphological adaptations in the larynx or vocal tract [2]. An unusual example of an obvious mismatch between fundamental frequency and body size is found in the two closest living relatives of humans, bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Although these two ape species overlap in body size [3], bonobo calls have a strikingly higher f0 than corresponding calls from chimpanzees [4]. Here, we compare acoustic structures of calls from bonobos and chimpanzees in relation to their larynx morphology. We found that shorter vocal fold length in bonobos compared to chimpanzees accounted for species differences in f0, showing a rare case of positive selection for signal diminution in both bonobo sexes

    Chimpanzee vowel-like sounds and voice quality suggest formant space expansion through the hominoid lineage

    The origins of human speech are obscure; it is still unclear what aspects are unique to our species or shared with our evolutionary cousins, in part due to a lack of common framework for comparison. We asked what chimpanzee and human vocal production acoustics have in common. We examined visible supra-laryngeal articulators of four major chimpanzee vocalizations (hoos, grunts, barks, screams) and their associated acoustic structures, using techniques from human phonetic and animal communication analysis. Data were collected from wild adult chimpanzees, Taï National Park, Ivory Coast. Both discriminant and principal component classification procedures revealed classification of call types. Discriminating acoustic features include voice quality and formant structure, mirroring phonetic features in human speech. Chimpanzee lip and jaw articulation variables also offered similar discrimination of call types. Formant maps distinguished call types with different vowel-like sounds. Comparing our results with published primate data, humans show less F1–F2 correlation and further expansion of the vowel space, particularly for [i] sounds. Unlike recent studies suggesting monkeys achieve human vowel space, we conclude from our results that supra-laryngeal articulatory capacities show moderate evolutionary change, with vowel space expansion continuing through hominoid evolution.     A productivity collapse to end earth's great oxidation

The definitive version was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 116 (35), (2019): 17207-17212, doi:10.1073/pnas.1900325116.It has been hypothesized that the overall size of—or efficiency of carbon export from—the biosphere decreased at the end of the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) (ca. 2,400 to 2,050 Ma). However, the timing, tempo, and trigger for this decrease remain poorly constrained. Here we test this hypothesis by studying the isotope geochemistry of sulfate minerals from the Belcher Group, in subarctic Canada. Using insights from sulfur and barium isotope measurements, combined with radiometric ages from bracketing strata, we infer that the sulfate minerals studied here record ambient sulfate in the immediate aftermath of the GOE (ca. 2,018 Ma). These sulfate minerals captured negative triple-oxygen isotope anomalies as low as ∼ −0.8‰. Such negative values occurring shortly after the GOE require a rapid reduction in primary productivity of >80%, although even larger reductions are plausible. Given that these data imply a collapse in primary productivity rather than export efficiency, the trigger for this shift in the Earth system must reflect a change in the availability of nutrients, such as phosphorus. Cumulatively, these data highlight that Earth’s GOE is a tale of feast and famine: A geologically unprecedented reduction in the size of the biosphere occurred across the end-GOE transition.Olivia M.
