Low energy spin fluctuations in the heavy fermion compound CeLaRuSi
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on a single
crystal of the heavy fermion compound CeLaRuSi,
which is at the borderline between an antiferromagnetically ordered and a
paramagnetic ground state. Intensity maps as a function of wavevector and
energy ( meV) were obtained at temperatures and 2 K, using
the time-of-flight spectrometer IRIS. An unexpected saturation of the
relaxation rate and static susceptibility of the spin fluctuations is found at

Mapping compositional and particle size variations across Silver Lake Playa: Relevance to analyses of Mars TIR data
The high spectral and spatial resolution thermal infrared (TIR) data to be acquired from the upcoming Mars Observer-Thermal Emission Spectra (TES) mission will map the composition and texture of the Martian sediments. To prepare for these data, portions of two remote sensing experiments were conducted to test procedures for extracting surface property information from TIR data. Reported here is the continuing analysis of Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data, field emission spectra, laboratory Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) reflectance spectra, and field observations with respect to the physical characteristics (composition, emissivity, etc.) of Silver Lake playa in southern California

Status of major southern California marine sport fish species with management recommendations, based on analyses of catch and size composition data collected on board commercial passenger fishing vessels from 1985 through 1987
This report on the status of major southern California marine sport fish species, together with management recommendations, is based on analyses of catch and size composition data, which were collected on board Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels (CPFV) from 1985 through
1987. The project was designed to determine the status of those fishes that support the CPFV industry, and to make management recommendations when deemed necessary.
We collected and analyzed data based on random, stratified, on-board sampling of weekday (excluding holidays), open CPFV's on a year-round basis. We sampled 1/2-day, 3/4-day, and full-day type trips at a level of 5%. The survey area extended from below the United States-Mexican
border to Point Arguello. Catch estimates were extrapolated to include weekday as well as weekend and holiday, open and chartered CPFV's.
We sampled 736 CPFV trips in 1985, 650 in 1986, and 631 in 1987. We encountered 180 species of fishes, including 49 species of rockfishes. We performed detailed analyses on 14 non-rockfish species and 12 rockfish species, as well as
all fishes as a group and all rockfishes as a group.
We found a moderate increase in total catch of combined fish species between this study and one in the mid-1970's, due primarily to sizeable increases in catches of Pacific mackerel, kelp bass, barred sand bass,
and barracuda. However, we also found that there has been more than a 50% decline in the CPFV rockfish catches, due primarily to substantial decreases in catches of bocaccio, chilipepper, and olive rockfish. We have recommended that the current 15-rockfish bag limit regulation be reduced to a 10-rockfish bag limit, and that additional and equitable conservation measures also be implemented on the commercial rockfish fishery. Longitudinal and Transverse Zeeman Ladders in the Ising-Like Chain Antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8
We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the N\'eel phase of the chain
compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study
reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders,
understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive
linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes,
respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no
classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that
weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analysis
reveals that BaCo2V2O8, with moderate Ising anisotropy and sizable interchain
interactions, remarkably fulfills the conditions necessary for the observation

Composite CDMA - A statistical mechanics analysis
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) in which the spreading code assignment
to users contains a random element has recently become a cornerstone of CDMA
research. The random element in the construction is particular attractive as it
provides robustness and flexibility in utilising multi-access channels, whilst
not making significant sacrifices in terms of transmission power. Random codes
are generated from some ensemble, here we consider the possibility of combining
two standard paradigms, sparsely and densely spread codes, in a single
composite code ensemble. The composite code analysis includes a replica
symmetric calculation of performance in the large system limit, and
investigation of finite systems through a composite belief propagation
algorithm. A variety of codes are examined with a focus on the high
multi-access interference regime. In both the large size limit and finite
systems we demonstrate scenarios in which the composite code has typical
performance exceeding sparse and dense codes at equivalent signal to noise

A Classical Density-Functional Theory for Describing Water Interfaces
We develop a classical density functional for water which combines the White
Bear fundamental-measure theory (FMT) functional for the hard sphere fluid with
attractive interactions based on the Statistical Associating Fluid Theory
(SAFT-VR). This functional reproduces the properties of water at both long and
short length scales over a wide range of temperatures, and is computationally
efficient, comparable to the cost of FMT itself. We demonstrate our functional
by applying it to systems composed of two hard rods, four hard rods arranged in
a square and hard spheres in water
Magnetic-field enhanced aniferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePtSi
The effect of magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin correlations in
the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePtSi was
investigated by neutron scattering. The application of a magnetic field B
increases the antiferromagnetic (AFM) peak intensity. This increase depends
strongly on the field direction: for B[0 0 1] the intensity
increases by a factor of 4.6 at a field of 6.6 T, which corresponds to more
than a doubling of the AFM moment, while the moment increases by only 10 % for
B[1 0 0] at 5 T. This is in strong contrast to the inelastic
response near the antiferromagnetic ordering vector, where no marked field
variations are observed for B[0 0 1] up to 3.8 T. The results
reveal that the AFM state in CePtSi, which coexists with superconductivity,

Intensive Family Preservation Services: A Short History but a Long Past
Intensive family preservation services (IFPS) is a program model that has been disseminated widely throughout the country, and has received federal recognition and monetary support since the early 1980s. Recently, IFPS has been criticized for seemingly being unable to prevent out-of-home placements. The authors contend that many evaluators and policy analysts have lost sight of the historical roots of IFPS, and are focusing only on recent fiscal and policy contexts when assessing IFPS program effectiveness. This article reviews the therapeutic and programmatic origins of IFPS including desired treatment outcomes, and suggests that evaluators and policy analysts redirect their focus accordingly
