    The Effect of Walkthrough Observations on Teacher Perspectives in Christian Schools

    This study investigated the effects on teacher perceptions of frequent, brief classroom observations in Christian schools. Teachers (N=111) responded to 13 belief and value statements prior to and after the term during which administrators conducted weekly, brief, unannounced observations in their classes. Teachers reported significant positive change regarding (a) analyzing reasons for selecting methods to assess learning, (b) being encouraged after class observations, and (c) being encouraged after receiving feedback related to the observations

    Sharing storage using dirty vectors

    Consider a computation F with n inputs (independent variables) and m outputs (dependent variables) and suppose that we wish to evaluate the Jacobian of F. Automatic differentiation commonly performs this evaluation by associating vector storage either with the program variables (in the case of forward-mode automatic differentiation) or with the adjoint variables (in the case of reverse). Each vector component contains a partial derivative with respect to an independent variable, or a partial derivative of a dependent variable, respectively. The vectors may be full vectors, or they may be dynamically managed sparse data structures. In either case, many of these vectors will be scalar multiples of one another. For example, any intermediate variable produced by a unary operation in the forward mode will have a derivative vector that is a multiple of the derivative for the argument. Any computational graph node that is read just once during its lifetime will have an adjoint vector that is a multiple of the adjoint of the node that reads it. It is frequently wasteful to perform component multiplications explicitly. A scalar multiple of another vector can be replaced by a single multiplicative "scale factor" together with a pointer to the other vector. Automated use of this "dirty vector" technique can save considerable memory management overhead and dramatically reduce the number of floating-point operations required. In particular, dirty vectors often allow shared threads of computation to be reverse-accumulated cheaply.     The propagator of a virtual ϕ\phi-field with emission of nn on-mass-shell particles all being exactly at rest is calculated at the tree-level in λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 theory by directly solving recursion equations for the sum of Feynman graphs. It is shown that the generating function for these propagators is equivalent to a Fourier transform of the recently found Green's function within the background-field technique for summing graphs at threshold suggested by Lowell Brown. Also the derivation of the result that the tree-level on-mass-shell scattering amplitudes of the processes 2→n2 \to n are exactly vanishing at threshold for n>4n > 4 is thus given in the more conventional Feynman diagram technique.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, TPI-MINN-92/46-

    Field Quantization, Photons and Non-Hermitean Modes

    Field quantization in three dimensional unstable optical systems is treated by expanding the vector potential in terms of non-Hermitean (Fox-Li) modes in both the cavity and external regions. The cavity non-Hermitean modes (NHM) are treated using the paraxial and monochromaticity approximations. The NHM bi-orthogonality relationships are used in a standard canonical quantization procedure based on introducing generalised coordinates and momenta for the electromagnetic (EM) field. The quantum EM field is equivalent to a set of quantum harmonic oscillators (QHO), associated with either the cavity or the external region NHM. This confirms the validity of the photon model in unstable optical systems, though the annihilation and creation operators for each QHO are not Hermitean adjoints. The quantum Hamiltonian for the EM field is the sum of non-commuting cavity and external region contributions, each of which is sum of independent QHO Hamiltonians for each NHM, but the external field Hamiltonian also includes a coupling term responsible for external NHM photon exchange processes. Cavity energy gain and loss processes is associated with the non-commutativity of cavity and external region operators, given in terms of surface integrals involving cavity and external region NHM functions on the cavity-external region boundary. The spontaneous decay of a two-level atom inside an unstable cavity is treated using the essential states approach and the rotating wave approximation. Atomic transitions leading to cavity NHM photon absorption have a different coupling constant to those leading to photon emission, a feature resulting from the use of NHM functions.     Exploring the PcycP_{cyc} vs ProtP_{rot} relation with flux transport dynamo models of solar-like stars

    Aims: To understand stellar magnetism and to test the validity of the Babcock-Leighton flux transport mean field dynamo models with stellar activity observations Methods: 2-D mean field dynamo models at various rotation rates are computed with the STELEM code to study the sensitivity of the activity cycle period and butterfly diagram to parameter changes and are compared to observational data. The novelty is that these 2-D mean field dynamo models incorporate scaling laws deduced from 3-D hydrodynamical simulations for the influence of rotation rate on the amplitude and profile of the meridional circulation. These models make also use of observational scaling laws for the variation of differential rotation with rotation rate. Results: We find that Babcock-Leighton flux transport dynamo models are able to reproduce the change in topology of the magnetic field (i.e. toward being more toroidal with increasing rotation rate) but seem to have difficulty reproducing the cycle period vs activity period correlation observed in solar-like stars if a monolithic single cell meridional flow is assumed. It may however be possible to recover the PcycP_{cyc} vs ProtP_{rot} relation with more complex meridional flows, if the profile changes in a particular assumed manner with rotation rate. Conclusions: The Babcock-Leighton flux transport dynamo model based on single cell meridional circulation does not reproduce the PcycP_{cyc} vs ProtP_{rot} relation unless the amplitude of the meridional circulation is assumed to increase with rotation rate which seems to be in contradiction with recent results obtained with 3-D global simulations.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication by A&A 1: AIM, CEA/DSM-CNRS-Univ.     Excluding patients of ethnic minority groups from clinical trials is unethical, introduces substantial bias, and means that findings are based on unrepresentative populations. The National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act 1993 requires that all minority groups be represented in the sample in research projects supported by the National Institutes of Health, unless there is a clear and compelling justification not to do so. In the United Kingdom no such legislation exists

    The influence of steps on the dissociation of NO on Pt surfaces: Temperature-programmed desorption studies of NO adsorption on Pt{211}

    Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) has been used to investigate the adsorption of NO on Pt{211} at 300 K and 120 K. Results show that NO dissociation occurs readily on Pt{211}, as evidenced by the observation of N-2 and N2O in the TPD spectrum. Following adsorption at 120 K three NO TPD peaks at 338, 416, and 503 K are observed, in agreement with previous observations. In combination with data acquired in a recent reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory investigation of NO/Pt{211}, these peaks are assigned to the desorption of NO from an O-NO complex, the recombinative desorption of N and O atoms, and to desorption of a step-bridged NO species, respectively. These assignments are in disagreement with previous work, where the high-temperature NO peak was assigned to the desorption of step bound NO and the two low-temperature peaks were assigned to the desorption of NO from terrace sites. TPD spectra recorded following adsorption at 300 K, with a heating rate of 1 K s(-1), show similar features to those recorded following 120 K adsorption. This is also in disagreement with previous observations, where only two NO TPD peaks were observed following adsorption at room temperature. This disagreement can be accounted for by the different heating rates used in the two experiments. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics

    Skyrme Hartree-Fock Calculations for the Alpha Decay Q Values of Super-Heavy Nuclei

    Hartree-Fock calculations with the SKX Skyrme interaction are carried out to obtain alpha-decay Q values for deformed nuclei above 208^{208}Pb assuming axial symmetry. The results for even-even nuclei are compared with experiment and with previous calculations. Predictions are made for alpha-decay Q values and half-lives of even-even super-heavy nuclei.
