Numerical simulation of dark lanes in post-flare supra-arcade
We integrate the MHD ideal equations to simulate dark void sunwardly moving
structures in post--flare supra--arcades. We study the onset and evolution of
the internal plasma instability to compare with observations and to gain
insight into physical processes and characteristic parameters of these
phenomena. The numerical approach uses a finite-volume Harten-Yee TVD scheme to
integrate the 1D1/2 MHD equations specially designed to capture supersonic flow
discontinuities. The integration is performed in both directions, the sunward
radial one and the transverse to the magnetic field. For the first time, we
numerically reproduce observational dark voids described in Verwichte et al.
(2005). We show that the dark tracks are plasma vacuums generated by the
bouncing and interfering of shocks and expansion waves, upstream an initial
slow magnetoacoustic shock produced by a localized deposition of energy modeled
with a pressure perturbation. The same pressure perturbation produces a
transverse to the field or perpendicular magnetic shock giving rise to
nonlinear waves that compose the kink--like plasma void structures, with the
same functional sunward decreasing phase speed and constancy with height of the

Addressing Ethical Issues in Studying Men’s Traumatic Stress
Like many human experiences, traumatic stress is highly gendered. Over the past several decades, a sub-stantial number of empirical studies have explored ethical issues in traumatic stress research. However, these studies have typically reported female samples or failed to account for the influence of gender in their analyses of mixed-sex samples. By extension, ethical issues that are relevant to male participants in traumatic stress research are poorly understood. After briefly exploring why the vulnerabilities of male participants are under-explored in traumatic stress research, this article highlights many ethical issues that are important to address when men participate in traumatic stress research, concluding with some sugges-tions for how these might be taken up to advance the field
Apparent Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law near a magnetic field tuned metal-antiferromagnetic quantum critical point
The temperature dependence of the interlayer electrical and thermal
resistivity in a layered metal are calculated for Fermi liquid quasiparticles
which are scattered inelastically by two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin
fluctuations. Both resistivities have a linear temperature dependence over a
broad temperature range. Extrapolations to zero temperature made from this
linear- range give values that appear to violate the Wiedemann-Franz law.
However, below a low-temperature scale, which becomes small close to the
critical point, a recovery of this law occurs. Our results describe recent
measurements on CeCoIn near a magnetic field-induced quantum phase
transition. Hence, the experiments do not necessarily imply a non-Fermi liquid

Spin Bose-Metal and Valence Bond Solid phases in a spin-1/2 model with ring exchanges on a four-leg triangular ladder
We study a spin-1/2 system with Heisenberg plus ring exchanges on a four-leg
triangular ladder using the density matrix renormalization group and Gutzwiller
variational wave functions. Near an isotropic lattice regime, for moderate to
large ring exchanges we find a spin Bose-metal phase with a spinon Fermi sea
consisting of three partially filled bands. Going away from the triangular
towards the square lattice regime, we find a staggered dimer phase with dimers
in the transverse direction, while for small ring exchanges the system is in a
featureless rung phase. We also discuss parent states and a possible phase

Another short-burst host galaxy with an optically obscured high star formation rate: The case of GRB 071227
We report on radio continuum observations of the host galaxy of the short
gamma-ray burst 071227 (z=0.381) with the Australia Telescope Compact Array
(ATCA). We detect the galaxy in the 5.5 GHz band with an integrated flux
density of Fnu = 43 +/- 11 microJy, corresponding to an unobscured
star-formation rate (SFR) of about 24 Msun/yr, forty times higher than what was
found from optical emission lines. Among the ~30 well-identified and studied
host galaxies of short bursts this is the third case where the host is found to
undergo an episode of intense star formation. This suggests that a fraction of
all short-burst progenitors hosted in star-forming galaxies could be physically
related to recent star formation activity, implying a relatively short merger

Semantic effects in sentence recall: The contribution of immediate vs delayed recall in language assessment
Sentence recall is increasingly used to assess language. It is widely debated what the task is actually testing, but one rarely explored aspect is the contribution of semantics to sentence recall. The few studies that have examined the role of semantics in sentence recall have employed an 'intrusion paradigm', following Potter and Lombardi (1990), and their paradigm relies on interference errors with conclusions based on an analysis of error patterns. We have instead manipulated the semantic plausibility of whole sentences to investigate the effects of semantics on immediate and delayed sentence recall. In Study 1, adults recalled semantically plausible and implausible sentences either immediately or after distracter tasks varying in lexical retrieval demands (backward counting and picture naming). Results revealed significant effects of plausibility, delay, and a significant interaction indicating increasing reliance on semantics as the demands of the distracter tasks increased. Study 2, conducted with 6-year-old children, employed delay conditions that were modified to avoid floor effects (delay with silence and forward counting) and a similar pattern of results emerged. This novel methodology provided robust evidence showing the effectiveness of delayed recall in the assessment of semantics and the effectiveness of immediate recall in the assessment of morphosyntax. The findings from our study clarify the linguistic mechanisms involved in immediate and delayed sentence recall, with implications for the use of recall tasks in language assessment.

Upper Critical Field in a Spin-Charge Separated Superconductor
It is demonstrated that the spatial decay of the pair propagator in a
Luttinger liquid with spin charge separation contains a logarithmic correction
relative to the free fermi gas result in a finite interval between the spin and
charge thermal lengths. It is argued that similar effects can be expected in
higher dimensional systems with spin charge separation and that the temperature
dependence of the upper critical field curve is a probe of this

Cosmic ray moderation of the thermal instability
We apply the Hermite-Bieler theorem in the analysis of the effect of cosmic rays on the thermal stability of an initially uniform, static background. The cosmic rays were treated in a fluid approximation and the diffusion coefficient was assumed to be constant in time and space. The inclusion of cosmic rays does not alter the criterion for the thermal stability of a medium subjected to isobaric perturbations. It does alter the criteria for the stability of a medium perturbed by small amplitude sound waves. In the limit of a high background cosmic ray pressure to thermal pressure ratio, the instability in response to high frequency sound waves is suppressed
