    Distributed Construction and Maintenance of Bandwidth-Efficient Bluetooth Scatternets

    Bluetooth networks can be constructed as piconets or scatternets depending on the number of nodes in the network. Although piconet construction is a well-defined process specified in Bluetooth standards, scatternet construction policies and algorithms are not well specified. Among many solution proposals for this problem, only a few of them focus on efficient usage of bandwidth in the resulting scatternets. In this paper, we propose a distributed algorithm for the scatternet construction problem, that dynamically constructs and maintains a scatternet based on estimated traffic flow rates between nodes. The algorithm is adaptive to changes and maintains a constructed scatternet for bandwidth-efficiency when nodes come and go or when traffic flow rates change. Based on simulations, the paper also presents the improvements in bandwidth-efficiency provided by the proposed algorithm

    Architecting fault-tolerant software systems

    The increasing size and complexity of software systems makes it hard to prevent or remove all possible faults. Faults that remain in the system can eventually lead to a system failure. Fault tolerance techniques are introduced for enabling systems to recover and continue operation when they are subject to faults. Many fault tolerance techniques are available but incorporating them in a system is not always trivial. We consider the following problems in designing a fault-tolerant system. First, existing reliability analysis techniques generally do not prioritize potential failures from the end-user perspective and accordingly do not identify sensitivity points of a system. \ud Second, existing architecture styles are not well-suited for specifying, communicating and analyzing design decisions that are particularly related to the fault-tolerant aspects of a system. Third, there are no adequate analysis techniques that evaluate the impact of fault tolerance techniques on the functional decomposition of software architecture. Fourth, realizing a fault-tolerant design usually requires a substantial development and maintenance effort. \ud To tackle the first problem, we propose a scenario-based software architecture reliability analysis method, called SARAH that benefits from mature reliability engineering techniques (i.e. FMEA, FTA) to provide an early reliability analysis of the software architecture design. SARAH evaluates potential failures from the end-user perspective to identify sensitive points of a system without requiring an implementation. \ud As a new architectural style, we introduce Recovery Style for specifying fault-tolerant aspects of software architecture. Recovery Style is used for communicating and analyzing architectural design decisions and for supporting detailed design with respect to recovery. \ud As a solution for the third problem, we propose a systematic method for optimizing the decomposition of software architecture for local recovery, which is an effective fault tolerance technique to attain high system availability. To support the method, we have developed an integrated set of tools that employ optimization techniques, state-based analytical models (i.e. CTMCs) and dynamic analysis on the system. The method enables the following: i ) modeling the design space of the possible decomposition alternatives, ii ) reducing the design space with respect to domain and stakeholder constraints and iii ) making the desired trade-off between availability and performance metrics. \ud To reduce the development and maintenance effort, we propose a framework, FLORA that supports the decomposition and implementation of software architecture for local recovery. The framework provides reusable abstractions for defining recoverable units and for incorporating the necessary coordination and communication protocols for recovery

    Water Exchange through Canal İstanbul and Bosphorus Strait

    The Turkish Straits System (TSS) regulates the transports of water, material and energy between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Amidst existing environmental threats to the region surrounding İstanbul, the environmental footprint of the proposed Canal İstanbul project needs to be evaluated through methods of natural science. We take the elementary step to answer the particular problem of coupled strait dynamics by adding the Canal to an existing hydrodynamic model and estimate changes in their common response. Compared to the virtually unmodified exchange flow in the Bosphorus, the flow in the Canal has a weak lower layer current component, contrasted with intense currents at the exit controls at its junction with the Marmara Sea. The net flux through this simplest hypothetical TSS configuration is considerably increased for a given sea level difference across the system. The modified regime is expected to have climatological consequences

    Impact of ultrasound treatment and ph-shifting on physicochemical properties of protein-enriched barley fraction and barley protein isolate

    Ultrasonication alone or in combination with a pH-shifting method could be applied as means for improving the techno-functional properties and performance of barley protein ingredients in liquid food matrix. Ultrasound technology was utilised with and without pH-shifting to 3, 7 and 9 aiming at investigating their impact on primary protein structure, protein solubility, particle size and colloidal stability of an air-classified protein-enriched barley fraction and a barley protein isolate. Shifting the pH of sample dispersion to 9 followed by neutralisation to pH 7 improved protein solubility and colloidal stability of the isolate whereas it had less impact on the protein-enriched fraction. Ultrasound treatment improved both protein solubility and colloidal stability of the protein-enriched fraction at alkaline pH and particle size reduction by ultrasonication was observed at all the studied pH-values. For protein isolate, ultrasonication improved protein solubility at all pH-values and colloidal stability was improved at acidic and neutral pH whereas the sample was inherently stable at alkaline pH. The protein profiles of both ingredients remained unaffected by ultrasound treatment. The results suggest adopting ultrasonication as a promising tool for improving applicability of barley protein ingredients in liquid food systems

    The Comparative Performance Analysis of Turkish Real Sector: VOKOR Method

    In the economic literature, it is shown that an important factor that increases volatility in business cycles is the disability of companies to criticize the cycle in advance and the lack of management capacity suitable for the current period. As a result of globalization in the developing world, businesses need to measure their financial performance at regular intervals to be able to carry out their decision-making, planning and auditing functions in an increasingly competitive environment. This study aims to analyse 25 non-financial sectors' performance data using the VIKOR method in Turkey for 2009-2019. The results regarding the performance of the companies have been evaluated considering the business cycle periods. According to the findings, the most successful companies diverged in periods of stability and crisis, while companies with a low performance show similar tendencies for all periods

    Modulation of Biological Responses to 2 ns Electrical Stimuli by Field Reversal

    Nanosecond bipolar pulse cancellation, a recently discovered Phenomenon, is modulation of the effects of a unipolar electric pulse exposure by a second pulse of opposite polarity. This attenuation of biological response by reversal of the electric field direction has been reported with pulse durations from 60 ns to 900 ns for a wide range of endpoints, and it is not observed with conventional electroporation pulses of much longer duration (\u3e 100 mu s) where pulses are additive regardless of polarity. The most plausible proposed mechanisms involve the field-driven migration of ions to and from the membrane interface (accelerated membrane discharge). Here we report 2 ns bipolar pulse cancellation, extending the scale of previously published results down to the time required to construct the permeabilizing lipid electropores observed in molecular simulations. We add new cancellation endpoints, and we describe new bipolar pulse effects that are distinct from cancellation. This new data, which includes transport of cationic and anionic permeability indicators, fluorescence of membrane labels, and patterns of entry into permeabilized cells, is not readily explained by the accelerated discharge mechanism. We suggest that multi-step processes that involve first charged species movement and then responses of cellular homeostasis and repair mechanisms are more likely to explain the broad range of reported results

    The Examination of Primary School Teachers' Financial Literacy Attitudes and Behaviors in Terms of Different Variables

    In this research, it is aimed to examine the level of financial literacy attitudes and behaviors of primary school teachers in terms of different variables. The sample of the research consisted of 211 primary school teachers and “financial literacy attitude and behavior scale” was used as data collection tool. As a result of the research, it was found out that financial literacy attitudes and behaviors of teachers did not show a significant difference according to gender, monthly family income, personal expenditure; however, a significant difference was found in terms of age. In addition, the family is placed on the top in terms of the resources that teachers acquire financial knowledge and skills. The internet ranked first in terms of the resources in which teachers followed financial knowledge and skills. It was found that although 32.2% of teachers follow daily financial developments,  13.7% of them do not follow at all
