    The Art of Un-belonging

    Get PDF
This practice-based research sets out to explore artistic strategies that destabilise fixed notions of belonging and identity in the context of globalisation and diasporic art. Drawing on Glissant’s concept of Relation ([1990], 1997) in combination with feminist and new materialist theories (Braidotti, Haraway) and an “anthropology beyond the human” (Kohn, 2013), the research challenges a dualistic conception of self/Other and contributes to the decolonisation of contemporary art by opening and reinscribing the concept of belonging and identity beyond the human. The practice element consists of three discrete yet interrelated artworks that challenge an ethnocentric and anthropocentric conception of belonging. The multilingual video-performance Surya Namaz (2018) is a personal investigation of yoga and namaz, the Muslim prayer ritual, exploring the potential of transcultural performance, opacity and multilingualism to undo fixed notions of belonging. Kahvehane Kongresspark (2016), a temporary café, ceramic cups/saucers and a site-specific performance in public space and Trans Plantations (2018), an installation of cups/saucers and coffee beans cast in porcelain in combination with an audio-visual element, are concerned with the colonial history and human entanglements with coffee, taking the exploration of belonging beyond the anthropocentric. The written thesis is composed of three chapters. Chapter 1 contextualises the research by providing a brief overview on the globalisation of art and introduces Glissant’s theory of Relation as guiding framework of the thesis. This part also reflects on feminist art and theory’s relevance for current discourses concerned with belonging and identity, exploring the potential of feminist strategies for the complication of binary thinking. The subsequent chapters are guided by and complement the practice element of the thesis through ways of critical analysis and performative writing, addressing questions posed by the practice in addition to case studies of contemporary artworks. Based on the conception of identity as relational, the research argues that Relation is central to the re-thinking of belonging and identity

Today, legal regulations, along with social awareness, have made waste management a necessity. Depending on the type of waste, technological developments have enabled an increase in the number of approaches, e.g., reusing, recycling, and manufacturing of different products. In this study, low-density boards were produced using different proportions of office waste paper, wood chips, and chopped E-glass fiber. Waste paper and glass fiber formed the middle layer of the boards and wood chips comprised the surface layers. The density, water absorption, and thickness swelling properties of the boards were investigated. Among the mechanical properties, the modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond strength were determined. The use of wastepaper led to a reduction in the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of the boards. An increase in the glass fiber ratio contributed positively to the water absorption and thickness swelling properties, whereas it directly led to decreases in the internal bond strength, and the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity values. Nonetheless, the low-density boards were able to meet the minimum modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity specified in ANSI 208.1 standards, while only one variation met the IB requirements.U današnje je vrijeme zakonska regulativa, uz društvenu svijest, gospodarenje otpadom učinila nužnošću.

This study seeks to reveal the multifaceted educational needs of primary school students who left their hometown due to the earthquake and continue their education in Istanbul. The research was carried out with 35 classroom teachers teaching primary school students forced to leave their city due to the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş and continue their education in public schools in Istanbul. In this qualitative research, a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher was used as a data collection tool. The data were analyzed via the descriptive method. Within the scope of the research, findings related to the educational needs of the earthquake survivor primary school students, the role of the classroom teachers in the classroom climate in the context of the earthquake experience, the support training needs of the classroom teachers regarding the education of the earthquake survivor students, the teacher guidance for the well-being of the earthquake survivors’ parents, and the teachers’ expectations from different ministries under the theme of the earthquake were determined. As a result, suggestions were offered on various activities that education stakeholders can do to minimize or eliminate the effects of the trauma experienced by primary school students due to the earthquake

Assessment of Seismic Load Capacity of a Slender Masonry Clock Tower

The paper presents the seismic vulnerability assessment of a historical masonry clock tower by means of the finite element method. The mechanical behavior and failure mechanism of these structures must be well understood in order to evaluate their performance and select an appropriate retrofit approach when needed. Stone towers, which sometimes have complex geometries and irregularities and are often designed for vertical loads, are vulnerable to lateral loads, especially earthquake loads, due to the slenderness of the tower and the limited ductility of the stone. This study aims to determine the horizontal load capacity of a magnificent clock tower by investigating its structural behavior using the finite element method. The analyzes carried out considering the seismicity of the region showed that the clock tower would be severely damaged or completely collapsed in case of an earthquake with an exceedance probability of 10% in 50 years. In non-linear time history analyses, the maximum base shear force to weight ratio was calculated as 0.27. The maximum drift ratio at the top of the clock tower reveals that the tower exceeds the collapse prevention performance level. The residual displacements obtained from non-linear time history analysis prove that plastic deformations occur on the tower body. In the light of this data, it is considered that the clock tower needs to be retrofitted with acceptable restoration procedures against possible earthquakes in the region

Halkın İradesi Demokrasiye Karşı: Türkiye’de Popülist Otoriterleşme

In this article, I study the relationship of the Justice and Development Party’s (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) populism-in-power and democracy, from a comparative and historical perspective, and based on a critical engagement with the populism literature. I begin by highlighting the political institutional expression of the populist political vision (to reflect the popular will in power), which prioritizes competitive elections among a variety of modern democratic institutions and mechanisms.  Based on this perspective, I outline a particular populist route to competitive (or electoral) authoritarianism: when in power, because populists exalt elections and undermine existing liberal democratic mechanisms that bridge people to power, they deprive citizens of the power to hold rulers accountable. I then trace the lineage of the populist political imagination in Turkey, demonstrating the continuities and discontinuities between the Democrat Party’s (Demokrat Parti, DP) and the AKP’s conceptions of the people and democracy. I argue that despite these parties’ differences on the level of the politicization of cultural divisions, there is a crucial continuity: the equalization of democracy with an exalted elected executive branch. Finally, I concentrate on the impact of the AKP’s populism-in-power on the Turkish political regime. I argue that because the AKP came to power in a defective democracy (with extra-democratic checks on the elected rulers and prone to the concentration of power), by 2011, the party managed to reframe Turkish political institutions according to their right-wing populist vision of democracy, an authoritarian regime with competitive elections.
