Soil microbial biomass in organic farming system.
Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability
The inter-community competition as a factor for sustainability and differentiation of tourism product : the case of National Park of Peneda Gerês
The inter-community competition through its local traditions may emerge as
a decisive factor to pave the way for the forthcoming of sustainable touristic opportunities,
involving communities and contributing decisively to its economic development. The Assumption
of the Identity Power (Castells, 1999) by the local communities emerges as a key
factor to strengthen their identity. The isolation of certain communities, usually regarded as
negative, strongly favours their involvement around their values, encouraging and promoting
the emergence of rivalries and consequent inter-community competitions
Modulation of electrical stimulation applied to human physiology and clinical diagnostic
The use, manipulation and application of electrical currents, as a controlled interference mechanism in the human body system, is currently a strong source of motivation to researchers in areas such as clinical, sports, neuroscience, amongst others. In electrical stimulation (ES), the current applied to tissue is traditionally controlled concerning stimulation
amplitude, frequency and pulse-width. The main drawbacks of the transcutaneous
ES are the rapid fatigue induction and the high discomfort induced by the non-selective
activation of nervous fibers.
There are, however, electrophysiological parameters whose response, like the response
to different stimulation waveforms, polarity or a personalized charge control, is still
unknown. The study of the following questions is of great importance:
What is the physiological effect of the electric pulse parametrization concerning
charge, waveform and polarity? Does the effect change with the clinical condition of
the subjects?
The parametrization influence on muscle recruitment can retard fatigue onset?
Can parametrization enable fiber selectivity, optimizing the motor fibers recruitment
rather than the nervous fibers, reducing contraction discomfort?
Current hardware solutions lack flexibility at the level of stimulation control and
physiological response assessment. To answer these questions, a miniaturized, portable
and wireless controlled device with ES functions and full integration with a generic
biosignals acquisition platform has been created. Hardware was also developed to provide complete freedom for controlling the applied current with respect to the waveform,
polarity, frequency, amplitude, pulse-width and duration.
The impact of the methodologies developed is successfully applied and evaluated in
the contexts of fundamental electrophysiology, psycho-motor rehabilitation and neuromuscular disorders diagnosis.

The creation of municipalities and the formalization of metropolitan areas : federal coordination challenges
This work aims to analyze the federal government actions on two topics related to the federative issue creation of municipalities and formalization of metropolitan areas. The goal was to understand the rationale underlying the federal government decisions in this field after the Constitution promulgation. The Union action between these poles demands analysis by its obvious implications in various public policies such as housing, sanitation, urban mobility, education, health and others. Among the studied elements, we emphasize the legislative proposals and institutional changes, whether it occurred or not. Events occurring in this little more than a quarter century, analyzed in accordance to the narrative method, show that the federal government has shown difficulty to coordinate this field. Omission is not rare, such as lack of attention by the federal executive to metropolitan and other urban areas and, on the other hand, central government levies disregarding the federation, such as the decision not to decide on national rules relating to the creation of new municipalities

Reflective thinking and experiential learning: a quasi-experimental quanti-quali response to greater diversification of activities, greater integration of student profiles
Trabalho apresentado em ICEELM 2022: XVI. International Conference on Education and Effective Learning
Methods, 20-21 setembro 2022, Lisboa, PortugalAlthough several studies have assumed (at least
implicitly) that learners' approaches to learning develop into deeper
approaches to higher education, there appears to be no clear theoretical
basis for this assumption and no empirical evidence. As a scientific
contribution to this discussion, a pedagogical intervention of a quasi experimental nature was developed, with a mixed methodology,
evaluating the intervention within a single curricular unit of Marketing,
using cases based on real challenges of brands, business simulation and
customer projects. Primary and secondary experiences were
incorporated in the intervention: the primary experiences are the
experiential activities themselves; the secondary experiences resulted
from the primary experience, such as reflection and discussion in work
teams. A diversified learning relationships was encouraged through the
various connections between the different members of the learning
community. The present study concludes that in the same context, the
students' response can be described as: students who reinforce the
initial deep approach, students who maintain the initial deep approach
level and others who change from an emphasis on the deep approach
to one closer to superficial. This typology did not always confirm
studies reported in the literature, namely, whether the initial level of
deep processing would influence the superficial and the opposite. The
result of this investigation points to the inclusion of pedagogical and
didactic activities that integrate different motivations and initial
strategies, leading to a possible adoption of deep approaches to
learning, since it revealed statistically significant differences in the
difference in the scores of the deep/superficial approach and the
experiential level. In the case of real challenges, the categories of
“attribution of meaning and meaning of studied” and the possibility of
“contact with an aspirational context” for their future professional
stand out. In this category, the dimensions of autonomy that will be
required of them were also revealed when comparing the classroom
context of real cases and the future professional context and the impact
they may have on the world. Regarding to the simulated practice, two
categories of response stand out: on the one hand, the motivation
associated with the possibility of measuring the results of the decisions
taken, an awareness of oneself and, on the other hand, the additional
effort that this practice required for some of the students.N/
Leprosy is one of the oldest and most instigating diseases to affect humans. Molecular and immunological tools are evaluated in epidemiological studies; however, the results present controversies mainly due to disease complexity and methodologies. This study describes the application of anti PGL-I serology and nasal swab DNA detection to characterize Mycobacterium leprae molecular epidemiology in patients and household contacts of leprosy patients. Among leprosy patients the positivity to the anti PGL-I ELISA and the PCR for the detection of M. leprae DNA in nasal swabs are inversely associated to the lepromin test and arte directly associated to the bacillary index and the clinical forms in the disease spectrum, increasing towards baciliferous forms. The overall positivity percentages were 63.3% for the anti PGL-I ELISA and 34.2% for the PCR for the detection ofM. leprae DNA in nasal swabs. Among household contacts of leprosy patients the overall percentages for the anti PGL-I ELISA and for the PCR for the detection of M. leprae DNA in nasal swabs were 13.3% e 4.7% respectively. Among leprosy patients, assays positivity is associated with the clinical presentation of the disease, increasing towards bacilliferous subtypes. Positive results in contacts represent healthy carriers and subclinical infection and these individuals can participate in transmission and spread of M. leprae in the community, even though they may not develop the disease. In endemic regions, contact monitoring is imperative in leprosy control for early case detection and chemoprophylaxis must be applied as prevention to disease development and disruption of transmission.
The literature on the Bolsa Família Program has focused on issues such as the impact on poverty and inequality, the effects related to the electoral process and the role of conditionalities. However, the Bolsa Família Program is also associated with a problem of principal-agent relationship, because it requires the effective control of a set of rules for its operation. In the national literature, little has been produced on the effect of formal rules as instruments for political actors’ behavioral modeling. The proposal here is to explore the role of the federal and local bureaucracies in public policies management in a highly decentralized federation. In order to test how factors of policy, institutional and geographical nature influence the intersectoral management of the program, the study uses multiple linear regression models for a comparative analysis between about 5.500 cities. The results show that variables such as political competition and regional location positively impact the quality of management. The study concludes that the effective application of rules was crucial to generate institutional learning among actors involved in the policy.
Leprosy persists as public health problem, particularly in Brazil, the second most
endemic country in the world. The chain of transmission and mechanisms of infection
are not completely understood. Here we investigated the route of infection and
disease onset, from airways exposure, colonization, and bloodstream dissemination.
This is the first study to evaluate in the same individual the detection of M. leprae
DNA through real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in nasal
vestibule, nasal turbinate mucosa, and peripheral blood samples; in addition to anti-
PGL-I serology by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the delayed
hypersensitive response through the Mitsuda test (intradermal reaction), of 113
leprosy patients and 104 household contacts of leprosy patients (HHCs). Data
exploratory bivariate statistics and multiple correspondence analysis were employed.
The DNA positivity among patients: 66.4% (75/113) in nasal swabs, 71.7% (81/113)
in nasal turbinate biopsies, 19.5% (22/113) in blood samples, and seropositivity of
62.8% (71/113); with increasing incidences towards the multibacillary (MB) pole of
the clinical spectrum. The mean quantities of M. leprae detected in the different
patient samples were: 1.8E+07 bacilli/reaction in nasal swabs, 4.1E+07
bacilli/reaction in nasal turbinate biopsies, and 9.3E+03 bacilli/reaction in peripheral
blood samples. Statistically significant relationships between every pairwise
comparison of data and an intricate multivariate congruence were observed for
patients’ data (P<0.05). The positivity among HHCs: 18.3% (19/104) for anti-PGL-I,
49% (51/104) for nasal swabs, 53.8% (56/104) for nasal biopsies, and 6.7% (7/104)
for blood samples. The mean quantities of M. leprae among the different samples
were: 1.8E+04 bacilli/reaction for nasal swabs, 1.3E+05 bacilli/reaction for nasal
turbinate biopsies, and 1.4E+04 bacilli/reaction for peripheral blood samples. The
comparison between the mean ELISA indexes obtained for the HHCs of PB patients
versus the results from contacts of MB patients were significantly different
(P=0.00γ7). The multiple correspondence analysis of HHCs’ data revealed
associations between: positive results to both qPCR in blood and anti-PGL-I, and
positive results to both qPCR in nasal swab and nasal turbinate biopsies. The
comparison between the mean values obtained for patients vs. HHCs, shown that for
the both sites in the nose (surface and mucosa), and for the anti-PGL-I, the means
differed significantly (P<0.0001). During a minimum follow-up period from 5 to 7
years, out of 104 HHCs, 7 developed leprosy (6.7%). Risk for the disease outcome
was estimated comparing results of HHCs WHO develop leprosy with those not
affected. Neither nasal passage nor mucosa positivity was determinant of later
disease onset; howsoever, blood presence increased the risk for disease
development [RR/LR+ 5.54 (IC 95% 1.30 - 23.62)], as well did the seropositivity [LR+
3.69 (95%CI 1.67 - 8.16); RR 5.97 (95%CI 1.45 - 24.5)]. Our findings strongly
suggest that the aerial route of infection and transmission is predominant. The overall
frequency of positivity among HHCs revealed that: M. leprae is widespread among
them; HHCs experience high bacillary burden regardless of their index case disease
manifestation; and that, HHCs comprise a recognizable group of individuals that
contribute to the infection risk to themselves and most probably to others.
Neste estudo investigamos a rota
(MB) do espectro clínico.
sangue, e 18,3% (19/104) para anti-PGL-I.
A comparação
anti-PGL-I, as médias diferiram significativamente (P<0,0001). Durante o período
mínimo de seguimento de 5 a 7 anos, de 104 HHCs, 7 desenvolveram hanseníase
doença; no entanto, a presença no sangue aumentou o risco [RR / LR + 5,54 (IC
95% 1,30-23,62)], assim como a soropositividade [LR + 3,69 (IC 95% 1,67-8,16); RR
5,97 (IC 95% 1,45-24,5)].
