On the Key-Uncertainty of Quantum Ciphers and the Computational Security of One-way Quantum Transmission
We consider the scenario where Alice wants to send a secret (classical)
-bit message to Bob using a classical key, and where only one-way
transmission from Alice to Bob is possible. In this case, quantum communication
cannot help to obtain perfect secrecy with key length smaller then . We
study the question of whether there might still be fundamental differences
between the case where quantum as opposed to classical communication is used.
In this direction, we show that there exist ciphers with perfect security
producing quantum ciphertext where, even if an adversary knows the plaintext
and applies an optimal measurement on the ciphertext, his Shannon uncertainty
about the key used is almost maximal. This is in contrast to the classical case
where the adversary always learns bits of information on the key in a known
plaintext attack. We also show that there is a limit to how different the
classical and quantum cases can be: the most probable key, given matching
plain- and ciphertexts, has the same probability in both the quantum and the
classical cases. We suggest an application of our results in the case where
only a short secret key is available and the message is much longer.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures. This is a revised version of an earlier version

Characterization and selection of nest sites by the Cuban sandhill crane (Grus canadensis nesiotes) in the grasslands of the El Venero Wildlife Refuge, Cuba

We characterized its nesting site and analyzed nest–site selection at three spatial scales in grasslands of El Venero Wildlife Refuge (Cuba), during the breeding seasons of 2005–2007. We monitored 26 nests until hatching. We also measured vegetation height, coverage at 30 and 100cm, and distance between grass stems at nests. These values were compared with values measured at points 100 m away from nests. We used a GIS to obtain distances to channels, roads and forest patches, as well as to determine percentages of grass, water, palm–grass and casuarina–grass in circles of 100, 400, 700 and 1,000 m of radius around both nests and random points. Vegetation variables around nests (height: 78.9± 2.1; coverage at 30 cm: 97.8± 0.6; coverage at 100 cm: 64.7 ± 1.6) were lower than those at 18 m away. There were no differences in vegetation variables or distances to forests and water between nests and random points located farther. Percentage covers of grassland and forest influenced nest site selection. Average distance between simultaneous active nests was 1,305.8 ± 106 m, the smaller area of potential use was 30,3 km2 and the mean influence area was 2,13 ± 0,36 km2. Nest site selection by cranes, as well as nest site characteristics, depended of the presence of extensive areas of grassland.

Evidence of ongoing radial migration in NGC 6754: Azimuthal variations of the gas properties
Understanding the nature of spiral structure in disk galaxies is one of the
main, and still unsolved questions in galactic astronomy. However, theoretical
works are proposing new testable predictions whose detection is becoming
feasible with recent development in instrumentation. In particular, streaming
motions along spiral arms are expected to induce azimuthal variations in the
chemical composition of a galaxy at a given galactic radius. In this letter we
analyse the gas content in NGC 6754 with VLT/MUSE data to characterise its 2D
chemical composition and H line-of-sight velocity distribution. We find
that the trailing (leading) edge of the NGC 6754 spiral arms show signatures of
tangentially-slower, radially-outward (tangentially-faster, radially-inward)
streaming motions of metal-rich (poor) gas over a large range of radii. These
results show direct evidence of gas radial migration for the first time. We
compare our results with the gas behaviour in a -body disk simulation
showing spiral morphological features rotating with a similar speed as the gas
at every radius, in good agreement with the observed trend. This indicates that
the spiral arm features in NGC 6754 may be transient and rotate similarly as
the gas does at a large range of radii.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL 2016 September

A simple recurrent neural network for solution of linear programming: Application to a Microgrid
The aim of this paper is to present a simple new class of recurrent neural networks, which solves linear programming. It is considered as a sliding mode control problem, where the network structure is based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions, and the KKT multipliers are the control inputs to be implemented with finite time stabilizing terms based on the unit control, instead of common used activation functions. Thus, the main feature of the proposed network is the fixed number of parameters despite of the optimization problem dimension, which means, the network can be easily scaled from a small to a higher dimension problem. The applicability of the proposed scheme is tested on real-time optimization of an electrical Microgrid prototype.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologí
A Fixed Time Convergent Dynamical System to Solve Linear Programming
The aim of this paper is to present a new dynamical system which solves linear programming. Its design is considered as a sliding mode control problem, where its structure is based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions, and its multipliers are the control inputs to be implemented by using fixed time stabilizing terms with vectorial structure, based on the unit control, instead of common terms used in other approaches. Thus, the main features of the proposed system are the fixed convergence time to the programming solution and the fixed parameters number despite of the optimization problem dimension. That is, there is a time independent to the initial conditions in which the system converges to the solution and, the proposed structure can be easily scaled from a small to a higher dimension problem. The applicability of the proposed scheme is tested on real-time optimization of an electrical Microgrid prototype.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologí

Interpretation of HINODE SOT/SP asymmetric Stokes profiles observed in quiet Sun network and internetwork
We present the first interpretation of the Stokes profile asymmetries
measured in the FeI 630 nm lines by SOT/SP, in both quiet Sun internetwork (IN)
and network regions. The inversion is carried out under the hypothesis of
MISMA, where the unresolved structure is assumed to be optically thin. We
analyze a 29.52"x31.70" subfield carefully selected to be representative of the
properties of a 302"x162" quiet Sun field-of-view at disk center. The inversion
code is able to reproduce the observed asymmetries in a very satisfactory way.
The inversion code interprets 25% of inverted profiles as emerging from pixels
in which both positive and negative polarities coexist. kG field strengths are
found at the base of the photosphere in both network and IN; in the case of the
latter, both kG fields and hG fields are admixed. When considering the magnetic
properties at the mid photosphere most kG fields are gone, and the statistics
is dominated by hG fields. We constrain the magnetic field of only 4.5% of the
analyzed photosphere (and this percentage reduces to 1.3% when referred to all
pixels, including those with low polarization not analyzed). The rest of the
plasma is consistent with the presence of weak fields not contributing to the
detected polarization signals. The average flux densities derived in the full
subfield and in IN regions are higher than the ones derived from the same
dataset by Milne-Eddington inversion. The existence of large asymmetries in
SOT/SP polarization profiles is uncovered. These are not negligible in quiet
Sun data. The MISMA inversion code reproduces them in a satisfactory way, and
provides a statistical description of the magnetized IN and network which
partly differs and complements the results obtained so far. From this it
follows the importance of having a complete interpretation of the line profile
shapes.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table - Accepted for publication on A&
