This paper analyses how the references related to immigration appearing in Spanish digital newspapers (paying special attention to Latin American immigration) contribute to create an image of this group as integrated or differentiated within the host society. More specifically, our aim is to offer linguistic keys (especially those related to the production of [im]polite expressions) that develop an ideological discourse around immigration, a discourse that media both create (as primary senders of contents) and reflect (as recipients of the comments from their readers).peerReviewe

The academic world has begun to study the knowledge of these business decisions, and there is incipient literature on the subject. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to the current knowledge on the impact of eco-innovation strategies on corporate performance by exposing and synthesizing the distinct positions found in the literature. For this purpose, a systematic and bibliometric review of 81 articles related to the economic impact of eco-innovation on firm performance, as well as the barriers and drivers of these strategies, was carried out. After analyzing the several types of eco-innovation, our results show that although previous empirical evidence suggests the existence of a positive effect, it is not generalizable due to the existence of several factors that may condition the impact of eco-innovation on corporate performance and its implementation. This study delves into the current academic literature on eco-innovation and firm performance, determining that both size and the environment in which a company is framed constitute a series of conditioning factors that may clarify why there is no consensus in the academic literature in this regard. In addition, this work encourages future lines of research with the aim of shedding light on this field of knowledge.Junta de Castilla y León, CLU-2019-03Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades P20_00605Consejería de Economía, Conocimiento, Empresas y Universidad, Junta de Andalucía A-SEJ-426-UGR20, B-SEJ-220-UGR18Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, PID2021-128713OB-I00Universidad de Granada/CBU

A Poglut1 mutation causes a muscular dystrophy with reduced Notch signaling and satellite cell loss

Skeletal muscle regeneration by muscle satellite cells is a physiological mechanism activated upon muscle damage and regulated by Notch signaling. In a family with autosomal recessive limbgirdle muscular dystrophy, we identified a missense mutation in POGLUT1 (protein O-glucosyltransferase 1), an enzyme involved in Notch posttranslational modification and function. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the mutation reduces Oglucosyltransferase activity on Notch and impairs muscle development. Muscles from patients revealed decreased Notch signaling, dramatic reduction in satellite cell pool and a muscle-specific adystroglycan hypoglycosylation not present in patients’ fibroblasts. Primary myoblasts from patients showed slow proliferation, facilitated differentiation, and a decreased pool of quiescent PAX7+ cells. A robust rescue of the myogenesis was demonstrated by increasing Notch signaling. None of these alterations were found in muscles from secondary dystroglycanopathy patients. These data suggest that a key pathomechanism for this novel form of muscular dystrophy is Notch-dependent loss of satellite cells.Junta de Andalucía PI-0017-201

A fully continuous individual-based model of tumor cell invasion

The aim of this work is to develop and study a fully continuous individual-based model (IBM) for cancer tumor invasion into a spatial environment of surrounding tissue. The IBM improves previous spatially discrete models, because it is continuous in all variables (including spatial variables), and thus not constrained to lattice frameworks. The IBM includes four types of individual elements: tumor cells, extracellular macromolecules (MM), a matrix degradative enzyme (MDE), and oxygen. The algorithm underlying the IBM is based on the dynamic interaction of these four elements in the spatial environment, with special consideration of mutation phenotypes. A set of stochastic differential equations is formulated to describe the evolution of the IBM in an equivalent way. The IBM is scaled up to a system of partial differential equations (PDE) representing the limiting behavior of the IBM as the number of cells and molecules approaches infinity. Both models (IBM and PDE) are numerically simulated with two kinds of initial conditions: homogeneous MM distribution and heterogeneous MM distribution. With both kinds of initial MM distributions spatial fingering patterns appear in the tumor growth. The output of both simulations is quite similar

Transcriptome (ESTs) of Avocado “Native” Mexicano Early Seed Development Shows Abundance of Regulatory, Antioxidant and Defense Genes

    Get PDF
Avocado native “Mexicano” (Persea americana var drymifolia) has been a really important species in agricultural and indigenous medicine. In the agricultural world, it has been the germplasm source for the generation of economically important cultivars like Hass and it is the main source of rootstocks for the world production of Hass avocado fruit. In spite of its importance, little is known about the molecular network of seed-fruit development. The aim of this work was to know the expressed genes (ESTs) during the early avocado native “Mexicano” seed development. Using total RNA we constructed cDNA libraries of fourth months seed development, sequencing, assembling and bioinformatic analysis was made. For validation, a semi-quantitative PCR experiments with the most abundant genes were made. About 5005 ESTs from the 5’ representing 1653 possible unigenes were isolated. After assembling process, we have 171 genes that are closely related to Nelumbo nucifera sequences. The transcriptome is dominating by one bHLH transcription factor, three metallothioneins and snakin, suggesting its main role in seed development. Until now, there are no molecular studies in avocado seed development

Influence of Different Vinification Techniques on Volatile Compounds and the Aromatic Profile of Palomino Fino Wines

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of vinification techniques on volatile compounds and sensory profiles in young Palomino fino white wines. Four winemaking techniques (pellicular maceration, supra-extraction and use of commercial yeast strains and of beta-glycosidase enzymes) were implemented to enhance the aromatic quality of wines elaborated from this neutral variety of grape. Volatile compound content, aromatic profile (OAVs) and sensorial analysis were determined. The results showed that all the vinification techniques studied led to an increase in volatile compounds compared to the control wine. Likewise, an influence of the vineyard and must extraction method on these compounds was observed. However, the greatest changes in aroma activity and sensory profile were a result of the pellicular maceration and supra-extraction techniques. The latter was differentiated by the highest content of terpenes and, consequently, the highest odour activity values of floral series. In addition, the supra-extraction was a very selective technique since it extracted terpenes and aromatic precursors, but not the acids responsible for the fatty characteristic, such as octanoic acid. In terms of sensory profile, the supra-extraction technique improved the intensity of the Palomino fino white wine and its aromatic quality with a previously not-determined floral character

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) and the European Union, suicide is considered to be a health problem of prime importance and to be one of the principal causes of unnatural death. In Spain, the number of suicides has increased 12% since 2005 . The Research Project “European Regions Enforcing Actions against Suicide (EUREGENAS), funded by the Health Program 2008-2013, has as main objective the description of an integrated model of Mental Health orientated to the prevention of suicide. The differences that allow distinguishing the meaning of prevention in suicide behavior are described and explained through a qualitative methodological strategy and through the creation of discussion groups formed by different groups of health professionals. The results highlight the existing differences between the diverse health professionals who come more in contact with this problem and it shows as well the coincidence of meaning that suicide has to be considered as a priority in the field of health.Según la OMS y la Unión Europea, consideran el suicidio un problema de primer orden y una de las principales causas de muerte no natural.
