With the advent of the Communicative Language Teaching Method, the traditional ‘Presentation-Practice-Production model of activity sequencing’ (P-P-P) from Structural Methods became the target of severe criticisms. The P-P-P should not be categorically rejected, since it actually conforms to one of the most infl uential models of skill acquisition in contemporary cognitive psychology: ACT-R (Anderson et al. 2004). Nevertheless, it is necessary to acknowledge the need for an activity sequencing model which respects cognitive learning principles and is explicitly inspired by real communicative processes. In this way, students’ language learning experience can be linked to the world outside the classroom. The ‘Communicative Processes-based model of activity sequencing’ (CPM)is described as a cognitively and pedagogically sound alternative to the P-P-P through the adaptation of a lesson from a well-known 21st century ELT textbook.
I present a selection of fragments of the book 'The social laws' by Gabriel Tarde (1843- 1904), published originally in 1898 and translated into Spanish at the beginning of the 20th century. After a long time condemned to oblivion Gabriel Tarde has been reinvigorated in recent decades for the pantheon of social sciences, even reaching the point of becoming a very relevant author for Actor-Network Theory (no less than Bruno Latour has turned him into 'ANT's ancestor'). However, I believe that the recuperation of Tarde's works could lead us to far more interesting discussions than a new mythic of ancestral figures. In this introduction I press for a more direct approach to Tarde's writings, something which might allow us to go beyond any presentist use of a historical figure to prop up a ready-made theory for mass-consumption. For this reason, I would like to propose to focus on Tarde's very own descriptions of the 'laws' of social life, made out of -potentially infinitesimal- social forms which repeat and differentiate -something he refers as the processes of imitation, opposition and innovation-. In that vein, I would like to mention some contemporary critical appraisals of those formulations in terms of 'laws' or Tarde's treatments of the scale of the social -where special attention is put on the relation he establishe
One of the methodological variables frequently forgotten by most ELT
methods is activity sequencing. However, this is not a secondary variable and it should
be intrinsically related to the cognitive built-in process governing knowledge acquisition.
Consequently, activity sequencing fully affects the pedagogically based organisation of
the teaching materials and the cognitive processes of language acquisition. The aim of
this paper is to perform an analysis of the activity sequencing in three different textbooks
representative of three main methods in the history of ELT: the Direct Method, the
Audiolingual Method and the Communicative Method. The analysis will be undertaken
from pedagogical and cognitive perspectives. The results will illustrate a) the degree of
agreement or non-agreement detected in each method and textbook; b) that the activity
sequencing variable is crucial to determine the nature of such differences or similarities.
Since the activity sequencing is similar across the three textbooks, it could be assumed
that methodological differences may be of less consequence than usually considered.

DIY anthropology: Disciplinary knowledge in crisis
This is an account of the transformations in our anthropological practice derived from working in the many interstitial spaces that opened up in the wake of the recent Spanish economic crisis. Ambulating in void spaces of Madrid and Barcelona, our anthropological practice was there re-built in ways that blurred our disciplinary boundaries. What there emerged was anthropology not as a disciplinary field, but as a field of experimental collaborations. A practice that re-learnt its ways treating counterparts as true epistemic partners, and setting up distinct ambiances of care with them: not only to care for one another in situations of great difficulty, but mostly to care for our different forms of inquiry, addressing the very situations we were under. An anthropology done together with others, assembling from scratch a conceptual body, caring for the mundane issues that are very often forgotten and rendered invisible by disciplinary fields: A DIY anthropology?
The purpose of this paper is to explore the special features on the determinants of partner selection taking into account firm size and sectoral characteristics. Particularly we analyze the selection among three partners: clients, suppliers and research organizations (universities and technological institutes). The estimation technique has been a multivariate probit and it has been run with longitudinal data of the «Encuesta sobre Estrategias Empresariales» (1997-2002). Exploring on several subsamples, according to firm size and sectoral characteristics, our results shed new light about the heterogeneity of the factors that determine the choice of each type of technological partner
Constant rate thermal analysis for thermal stability studies of polymers
This paper explores the relationship between the shapes of temperature-time curves obtained from experimental data recorded by means of constant rate thermal analysis (CRTA) and the kinetic model followed by the thermal degradation reaction. A detailed shape analysis of CRTA curves has been performed as a function of the most common kinetic models. The analysis has been validated with simulated data, and with experimental data recorded from the thermal degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate) (PBT), polyethylene (PE) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The resulting temperature-time profiles indicate that the studied polymers decompose through phase boundary, random scission, diffusion and nucleation mechanisms respectively. The results here presented demonstrate that the strong dependence of the temperature-time profile on the reaction mechanism would allow the real kinetic model obeyed by a reaction to be discerned from a single CRTA curve.Junta de Andalucía TEP-03002Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MAT 2008-06619/MA
