    Understanding social withdrawal in euthymic bipolar patients: The role of stigma

    [EN]Social withdrawal acts as a risk factor in mental health, disturbing clinical management and quality of life in euthymic bipolar patients. However, no previous study has analyzed what variables might predict it. We conducted a cross-sectional study in which 49 euthymic bipolar patients were assessed. The analysis showed that taken together, stereotype endorsement, discrimination experience and control over illness as measured by the ISMI, together explained 80.4% of the variability in social withdrawal. In conclusion, an early assessment of self-stigma and perception of control over illness would help euthymic patients to improve their social situation, reducing social withdrawal

    Quality of life in euthymic bipolar patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    [EN]Background: Patients with bipolar disorder, even euthymic, could suffer an impairment in their quality of life compared to healthy controls. Since no previous systematic review and meta-analysis has been conducted, the aim of the current study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies with matched cases and controls on quality of life in adult Euthymic Bipolar Disorder patients. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis that followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was conducted. Major electronic databases were searched on August 2018 to assess the variables associated with quality of life in euthymic bipolar disorder patients. After selecting the studies, data collection, quality assessment and subsequently statistical analysis were done. Results: Sixteen studies were finally selected for systematic review and meta-analysis. Four different quality of life instruments were used among the different studies. Effect size analysis showed that there were significant differences in quality of life outcomes between euthymic bipolar disorder patients and healthy controls (d=0.997; SE=0.33; 95%CI=-1.64 to -0.36), with lower quality of life in the euthymic patients. Furthermore, time since euthymia explained 15.62% of variability, and age of control group explained 28.39% of variability. No other moderators were statistically significant. Limitations: The instruments used were heterogeneous. Moreover, the role of other clinical moderators could not be included due to the lack of this information in most of the articles. Conclusions: Quality of life is lower in euthymic bipolar patients than in healthy controls. However, longer time in euthymia is associated with better outcomes

    Customized in situ functionalization of nanodiamonds with nanoparticles for composite carbon-paste electrodes

    The incorporation of nanomaterials on (bio)sensors based on composite materials has led to important advances in the analytical chemistry field due to the extraordinary properties that these materials offer. Nanodiamonds (NDs) are a novel type of material that has raised much attention, as they have the possibility of being produced on a large scale by relatively inexpensive synthetic methodologies. Moreover, NDs can present some other interesting features, such as fluorescence, due to surface functionalization and proved biocompatibility, which makes them suitable for biomedical applications. In addition, NDs can be customized with metallic nanoparticles (NPs), such as silver or gold, in order to combine the features of both. Raw NDs were used as modifiers of sensors due to the electrocatalytic effect of the sp2 and oxygenated species present on their surface. The aim of this research work is evaluating the applicability of NDs modified with silver (Ag@NDs) and gold (Au@NDs) nanoparticles for the development of a suitable (bio)sensing platform. A complete morphological and electrochemical characterization as a function of the prepared nanocomposite composition was performed in order to improve the electroanalytical properties of the developed (bio)sensors. In the present work, the optimal composition for Au@NDs present on the nanocomposite matrix is 3.5% and the one for Ag@NDs is 1%. Good results were obtained in the evaluation of the optimal composition towards hydrogen peroxide and glucose as a model analyte using a (bio)sensor based on graphite-epoxy-Ag@NDs (17:82:1)

    A Scoping Review of the Influence of Mindfulness on Men’s Sexual Activity

    Mindfulness practice and mindfulness-based interventions are widely known, especially for women’s sexuality. However, it is currently unknown how this practice affects the experience of male sexuality, possibly due to the existence of pharmacological treatments that are usually the first choice of treatment for men. The objectives of this study are to explore the influence of mindfulness on different components of men’s sexuality from a scoping review of relevant scientific articles existing in the literature. A literature search from 2010 to 2022 was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Dialnet, SciELO Citation Index, and Redalyc. Out of the 238 studies, 12 that met the defined selection criteria were selected. The analysis of these studies seems to indicate that the practice of mindfulness favours different variables of male sexuality, such as satisfaction and sexual functioning or genital self-image. Mindfulness-based interventions represent a valuable and promising contribution. No adverse effects were detected from the review of scientific articles considered in this work. Nevertheless, more randomized studies with active control groups are necessary to establish the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions in sex therapy for men

    Nanocrystalline Al Composites from Powder Milled under Ammonia Gas Flow

    The production of high hardness and thermally stable nanocrystalline aluminium composites is described. Al powder was milled at room temperature in an ammonia flow for a period of less than 5 h. NH3 dissociation during milling provokes the absorption, at a high rate, of nitrogen into aluminium, hardening it by forming a solid solution. Controlled amounts of AlN and Al5O6N are formed during the subsequent sintering of milled powders for consolidation. The pinning action of these abundant dispersoids highly restrains aluminium grain growth during heating.The mean size of the Al grains remains below 45nm and even after the milled powder is sintered at 650∘C for 1h

    Is adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in saliva and serum a more accurate disease detection tool than traditional redox balance parameters in early-lactating dairy cows?

    Enzyme adenosine deaminase (ADA) is a marker of inflammation in domestic animals, but it is unclear whether it is a reliable marker of oxidative stress, especially in the transition period in dairy cows. This study aims to assess if ADA and redox status measurements in saliva provide the same utility to detect disease condition as that obtained from serum. Sixty-eight multiparous Holstein cows, between 2 and 3 weeks postpartum were selected. Five study groups were established: control (healthy), and cows with ketosis, mastitis, laminitis, and metritis. The parameters measured were ADA activity, total oxidants (TOS), antioxidants (TAC), and OSi ratio. Regarding redox status, no significant differences arise in both saliva and serum being the correlations negative and not significant. In saliva, ADA activity in healthy cows differs from those with pathological processes, having the lowest activities. In serum, ADA activity is similar in the healthy and ketosis cows, showing the lowest activities meanwhile animals with mastitis, laminitis, or metritis have significantly higher activities.     Changes in iron metabolism and oxidative status in STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with bis(maltolato) oxovanadium(IV) as an antidiabetic agent

    The role of vanadium as a micronutrient and hypoglycaemic agent has yet to be fully clarified. The present study was undertaken to investigate changes in the metabolism of iron and in antioxidant defences of diabetic STZ rats following treatment with vanadium. Four groups were examined: control; diabetic; diabetic treated with 1 mgV/day; and Diabetic treated with 3 mgV/day. The vanadium was supplied in drinking water as bis(maltolato) oxovanadium (IV) (BMOV). The experiment had a duration of five weeks. Iron was measured in food, faeces, urine, serum, muscle, kidney, liver, spleen, and femur. Superoxide dismutase, catalase, NAD(P)H: quinone-oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) activity, and protein carbonyl group levels in the liver were determined. In the diabetic rats, higher levels of Fe absorbed, Fe content in kidney, muscle, and femur, and NQO1 activity were recorded, together with decreased catalase activity, in comparison with the control rats. In the rats treated with 3 mgV/day, there was a significant decrease in fasting glycaemia, Fe content in the liver, spleen, and heart, catalase activity, and levels of protein carbonyl groups in comparison with the diabetic group. In conclusion BMOV was a dose-dependent hypoglycaemic agent.     Elucidating the Therapeutic Potential of Bis(Maltolato)OxoVanadium(IV): The Protective Role of Copper in Cellular Metabolism

    Vanadium (V) is a trace mineral whose biological activity, role as a micronutrient, and pharmacotherapeutic applications remain unknown. Over the last years, interest in V has increased due to its potential use as an antidiabetic agent mediated by its ability to improve glycemic metabolism. However, some toxicological aspects limit its potential therapeutic application. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of the co-treatment with copper (Cu) and bis(maltolato)oxovanadium(IV) (BMOV) as a possible strategy to reduce the toxicity of BMOV. Treating hepatic cells with BMOV reduced cell viability under the present conditions, but cell viability was corrected when cells were co-incubated with BMOV and Cu. Additionally, the effect of these two minerals on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA was evaluated. Co-treatment with both metals reduced the nuclear damage caused by BMOV. Moreover, treatment with these two metals simultaneously tended to reduce the ND1/ND4 deletion of the mitochondrial DNA produced with the treatment using BMOV alone.     Mindfulness in Sexual Activity, Sexual Satisfaction and Erotic Fantasies in a Non-Clinical Sample

    he goal of this study is to better understand the relation between the practice of Mindfulness and the sexual activity, sexual satisfaction and erotic fantasies of Spanish-speaking participants. This research focuses on the comparison between people who practice Mindfulness versus naïve people, and explores the practice of Mindfulness and its relation with the following variables about sexuality: body awareness and bodily dissociation, personal sexual satisfaction, partner and relationship-related satisfaction, desire, subjective sexual arousal, genital arousal, orgasm, pain, attitudes towards sexual fantasies and types of sexual fantasies. The sample consisted of 106 selected adults, 32 men and 74 women, who completed six measures on an online survey platform: (a) Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), (b) Scale of Body Connection (SBC), (c) New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS), (d) Scale of Sexual Activity in Women (SSA-W) and Men (SSA-M), (e) Hurlbert Index of Sexual Fantasy (HISF), (f) Wilson’s Sex Fantasy Questionnaire. In the MAAS, Body Awareness subscale (SBC), NSSS, SSA-W and SSA-M, HISF and intimate fantasies subscale (Wilson’s questionnaire), people in the Mindfulness condition showed higher scores and these differences were statistically significant. These results may have relevant implications in the sexuality of clinical and non-clinical samples
