    Fault location in low-voltage distribution networks based on reflectometry - a case study

    Fault location can help transport and distribution system operators in their effort of minimizing supply interruption times. Nowadays, fault location devices are widely extended in the transport grid. However, the application of these solutions to distribution networks is not a feasible option due to the high cost of this equipment. Therefore, current research is focussed on costeffective fault location techniques which are adapted to electrical distribution networks. This paper presents results of a case study, conducted with detailed simulation models of two actual low-voltage (LV) distribution grids, using PSCAD software. One is a typical rural grid with long aerial lines, while the other is a typical urban grid with shorter line lengths which are mostly installed underground. The analysis is focussed on fault location based on travelling wave theory and reflectometry methods. The simulations include distributed parameter line models and a signal injector, in order to analyse the singular effects in the waveform which are caused by the special features of the LV network. It is shown that LV networks have some unique features which are not present in medium and highvoltage grids, which makes effective fault location more challenging.     A comparative between IEEE and EN in the transformer derating when supplying nonsinusoidal load current. A practical case

    Nowadays, power quality is a challenge for the distribution companies since the new energy policies are directed to a distributed generation system with power electronic based technologies. The reduction of distribution transformers capability when supplying nonsinusoidal load currents has a major impact within capacity reduction in distribution networks produced by technical losses. IEEE Std C57.110-2018, EN- 50464-3 and EN-50541-2 define procedures to derate transformers when supplying nonsinusoidal load currents.     Metodología de internacionalización de material docente basada en el uso de Markdown y Pandoc

    La internacionalización de la docencia ofrece grandes oportunidades para la Universidad, pero también plantea retos significativos para estudiantes y profesores. En particular, la creación y mantenimiento efectivo del material docente de una asignatura impartida simultáneamente en varios idiomas y con alto grado de coordinación entre los distintos grupos de la misma (p.ej., examen final/prácticas comunes para todos los estudiantes) puede suponer un importante desafío para los profesores. Para hacer frente a este problema, hemos diseñado una estrategia específica para la creación y gestión de material docente en dual (p.ej., inglés-español), y desarrollado un conjunto de herramientas multiplataforma para ponerla en práctica. La idea general es mantener en un mismo fichero de texto el contenido del documento que se desee construir en ambos idiomas, proporcionando justo detrás de cada párrafo y título en uno de los idiomas su traducción al otro idioma, empleando delimitadores especiales. Para crear estos documentos duales se emplea Markdown, un lenguaje de marcado ligero, que dada su sencillez y versatilidad está teniendo una rápida adopción por un amplio espectro de profesionales: desde escritores de novelas o periodistas, hasta administradores de sitios web. A partir de los documentos duales creados con Markdown, es posible generar automáticamente el documento final para cada idioma en el formato deseado que se pondrá a disposición de los estudiantes. Para esta tarea, nos basamos en el uso de la herramienta Pandoc, que permite realizar la conversión de documentos Markdown a una gran cantidad de formatos, como PDF, docx (Microsoft Word), EPUB (libro electrónico) o HTML. Como parte de nuestro proyecto, hemos creado extensiones de Pandoc para permitir la creación de documentos duales en Markdown y para aumentar la expresividad de este lenguaje con construcciones comunmente utilizadas en documentos de carácter docente

    Iberian acid peatlands: types, origin and general trends of development

    In the present study we reviewed the genesis, development and classification of peatlands in the Iberian Peninsula by conducting chronostratigraphic analysis of 108 of these ecosystems. The findings are summarised as follows: 1. The region has a wide variety of peatlands which are classified according to their biogeochemical, geomorphological and ecological characteristics into different types of bogs and fens. 2. Most of the peatlands occur in the Atlantic region followed by the Mediterranean and Alpine regions. Fens are more widely distributed than bogs, and blanket and raised bogs are mainly found in the Eurosiberian biogeographical region. 3. In many of the fens, the last active peat-forming cycle occurred during the Late Holocene (43 %). In most of the bogs, the peat-forming cycle occurred in the Middle Holocene (70 %), although in a substantial proportion of blanket bogs these processes occurred in the Early Holocene (30 %). 4. The peat formed in the last active cycle is, on average, thicker in raised bogs (322 cm) than in blanket bogs (257 cm) and fens (156 cm). 5. Vertical peat accumulation rates varied between 16 and 30 yr cm-1 in more than 40 % of the peatlands. The accumulation rates differed significantly between the different types of peatlands and were highest in the raised bogs. The accumulation rates were very variable in the fens. 6.     10,000 years of climate control over carbon accumulation in an Iberian bog (southwestern Europe)

    The northwest region of the Iberian Peninsula is home to a unique ecosystem of bogs, which are particularly sensitive to projected climate change. In this context, the rate of carbon (C) accumulation in Chao de Veiga Mol, an intact raised bog, was analysed. Changes in the accumulation rate over the past 10 millennia were determined in a peat core of 847 cm in depth, with a high mean rate of peat growth (11 yr cm−1, 0.09 cm yr−1). An age-depth model was generated from 22 14C dates and fallout radionuclides. Chronological, stratigraphical and physico-chemical data confirmed the existence of a single cycle of peat formation throughout the Holocene and the formation of ombrotrophic peat 9500 years ago. The total mean C content was 50.2%, and over 10 millennia 583 kg C m−2 accumulated at a mean rate of 35.3 g C m−2 yr−1, with a long-term (apparent) rate of carbon accumulation in the catotelm of 59.9 g C m−2 yr−1. These values are much higher than reported for other Iberian peatlands and are amongst the highest documented for peatlands in the northern hemisphere. The dynamics of C accumulation and other measured parameters reveals important variations throughout the Holocene. They could be associated with the main climatic events described in the northern hemisphere and are highly consistent with models established for northern latitudes. The Chao de Veiga Mol raised bog is unique and of great potential value for carrying out high resolution palaeoenvironmental studies, especially in relation to regional and local modulations in southern Europe.This research was made possible through receipt of a grant awarded by the Xunta de Galicia (project: INCITE09-200-019-PR)S

    A genome-wide association study follow-up suggests a possible role for PPARG in systemic sclerosis susceptibility

    Introduction: A recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) comprising a French cohort of systemic sclerosis (SSc) reported several non-HLA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showing a nominal association in the discovery phase. We aimed to identify previously overlooked susceptibility variants by using a follow-up strategy.<p></p> Methods: Sixty-six non-HLA SNPs showing a P value <10-4 in the discovery phase of the French SSc GWAS were analyzed in the first step of this study, performing a meta-analysis that combined data from the two published SSc GWASs. A total of 2,921 SSc patients and 6,963 healthy controls were included in this first phase. Two SNPs, PPARG rs310746 and CHRNA9 rs6832151, were selected for genotyping in the replication cohort (1,068 SSc patients and 6,762 healthy controls) based on the results of the first step. Genotyping was performed by using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. Results: We observed nominal associations for both PPARG rs310746 (PMH = 1.90 × 10-6, OR, 1.28) and CHRNA9 rs6832151 (PMH = 4.30 × 10-6, OR, 1.17) genetic variants with SSc in the first step of our study. In the replication phase, we observed a trend of association for PPARG rs310746 (P value = 0.066; OR, 1.17). The combined overall Mantel-Haenszel meta-analysis of all the cohorts included in the present study revealed that PPARG rs310746 remained associated with SSc with a nominal non-genome-wide significant P value (PMH = 5.00 × 10-7; OR, 1.25). No evidence of association was observed for CHRNA9 rs6832151 either in the replication phase or in the overall pooled analysis.<p></p> Conclusion: Our results suggest a role of PPARG gene in the development of SSc

    Standardized incidence ratios and risk factors for cancer in patients with systemic sclerosis: Data from the Spanish Scleroderma Registry (RESCLE)

    Aim: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) are at increased risk of cancer, a growing cause of non-SSc-related death among these patients. We analyzed the increased cancer risk among Spanish patients with SSc using standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and identified independent cancer risk factors in this population. Material and methods: Spanish Scleroderma Registry data were analyzed to determine the demographic characteristics of patients with SSc, and logistic regression was used to identify cancer risk factors. SIRs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) relative to the general Spanish population were calculated. Results: Of 1930 patients with SSc, 206 had cancer, most commonly breast, lung, hematological, and colorectal cancers. Patients with SSc had increased risks of overall cancer (SIR 1.48, 95% CI 1.36-1.60; P < 0.001), and of lung (SIR 2.22, 95% CI 1.77-2.73; P < 0.001), breast (SIR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10-1.54; P = 0.003), and hematological (SIR 2.03, 95% CI 1.52-2.62; P < 0.001) cancers. Cancer was associated with older age at SSc onset (odds ratio [OR] 1.22, 95% CI 1.01-1.03; P < 0.001), the presence of primary biliary cholangitis (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.18-4.68; P = 0.015) and forced vital capacity <70% (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.24-2.70; P = 0.002). The presence of anticentromere antibodies lowered the risk of cancer (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.45-0.97; P = 0.036). Conclusions: Spanish patients with SSc had an increased cancer risk compared with the general population. Some characteristics, including specific autoantibodies, may be related to this increased risk

    Revealing the last 13,500 years of environmental history from the multiproxy record of a mountain lake (Lago Enol, northern Iberian Peninsula)

A multiproxy analysis provided comprehensive information about regional humidity and temperature changes. The analysis included sedimentological descriptions, physical properties, organic carbon and carbonate content, mineralogy and geochemical composition together with biological proxies including diatom and ostracod assemblages. A detailed pollen study enabled reconstruction of variations in vegetation cover, which were interpreted in the context of climate changes and human impact. Four distinct stages were recognized for the last 13,500 years: (1) a cold and dry episode that includes the Younger Dryas event (13,500–11,600 cal. year BP); (2) a humid and warmer period characterizing the onset of the Holocene (11,600–8,700 cal. year BP); (3) a tendency toward a drier climate during the middle Holocene (8,700–4,650 cal. year BP); and (4) a return to humid conditions following landscape modification by human activity (pastoral activities, deforestation) in the late Holocene (4,650–2,200 cal. year BP).
