Alusta operoivalle Wave and Soul Cruises Oy:lle on tärkeää varmistaa turvallinen merenkulku ja oikeat toimintatavat kotimaan matkustajaliikenteessä. This thesis examines the process of making a firefighting and damage control plan for Vartiolaiva 55. The objective of the thesis was to make a plan for the events of fire or making water and to create guidelines which can be used as a basis of drills or familiarization of new employees. For the vessel operator, Wave and Soul Cruises Oy, it is important to ensure safe operation and right procedures in inland passenger traffic. In order to conduct the thesis, familiarizing to the ship was done by studying the vessel’s documents, elder masters of the ship were interviewed, and knowledge acquired from drills was processed. Similar firefighting and damage control plans from other vessels were also inspected. Firefighting and damage control plan contains detailed instructions for every department in case of fire or damage to the hull. In addition, it presents basic principles of fire, methods of firefighting, and the equipment onboard vessel for firefighting and damage control. The stability of a damaged vessel was also surveyed. Challenge writing the thesis was the scope of it: the plan should be as informative as possible, while as short as possible so that it is readable and usable for everyone. These factors crucially determined the structure. The vessel’s special features had also to be described as well as possible. Vartiolaiva 55 had no previous firefighting and damage control plan. As a result a functioning firefighting and damage control plan was established. Concerning firefighting, the basic prevention methods proved to be quite important. The plan is meant to offer training in the basic and the advanced techniques. Combined with practical drills, the firefighting and damage control plan improves the marine safety of the vessel

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2011.Page 198 blank. Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 190-197).What is the nature of and possibility for urban resiliency through adaptation? Adaptation implies responsiveness to phenomena that are disruptive to a system's functioning; it is a willful evolution in response to changed circumstances. Adaptation occurs in cities when an event or fluctuation provokes a re-figuring towards new conditions or hazards. Considering current environmental and systemic changes in coastal post-industrial cities, this thesis explores adaptation and adaptability's form and function therein. Building on a history of adaptive design and natural hazards research, expectant design uses concepts of specificity, incrementality, participation, and phasing in design for urban adaptability. Expectant design employs flexible architectural and urbanistic strategies in response to climate change hazards and harbor redevelopment. Helsinki's new Kalasatama district is used as a testing ground for the development of adaptive design in coastal cities that are undergoing accelerating environmental change and demands for capacity. The design components of the adaptation armature illustrate a scheme that is incremental, flexible, expectant and public. Design arrives at an adaptation strategy that is implemented in a phased and open process, and that addresses the necessary adaptability involved in climate change adaptation strategies.by Laura A. Equations for filling factor estimation in opal matrix

We consider two equations for the filling factor estimation of infiltrated zinc oxide (ZnO) in silica (SiO_2) opal and gallium nitride in ZnO opal. The first equation is based on the effective medium approximation, while the second one - on Maxwell-Garnett approximation. The comparison between two filling factors shows that both equations can be equally used for the estimation of the quantity of infiltrated nanocrystals inside opal matrix.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Is type 1 diabetes a chaotic phenomenon?

A database of ten type 1 diabetes patients wearing a continuous glucose monitoring device has enabled to record their blood glucose continuous variations every minute all day long during fourteen consecutive days. These recordings represent, for each patient, a time series consisting of 1 value of glycaemia per minute during 24 hours and 14 days, i.e., 20,160 data point. Thus, while using numerical methods, these time series have been anonymously analyzed. Nevertheless, because of the stochastic inputs induced by daily activities of any human being, it has not been possible to discriminate chaos from noise. So, we have decided to keep only the 14 nights of these ten patients. Then, the determination of the time delay and embedding dimension according to the delay coordinate embedding method has allowed us to estimate for each patient the correlation dimension and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. This has led us to show that type 1 diabetes could indeed be a chaotic phenomenon. Once this result has been confirmed by the determinism test, we have computed the Lyapunov time and found that the limit of predictability of this phenomenon is nearly equal to half the 90-minutes sleep-dream cycle. We hope that our results will prove to be useful to characterize and predict blood glucose variations

Primate population dynamics over 32.9 years at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda

We present census data for eight primate species spanning 32.9 years along the same transect at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, demonstrating major changes in the composition of the primate community. Correlated with an estimated decline of ∼89% in the red colobus population was an increase in encounter rates with chimpanzee parties. Our data, along with the unusually high rates of predation by chimpanzees on red colobus at Ngogo and the fact that the chimpanzee community at Ngogo is the largest ever recorded, support the conclusion that the red colobus decline was caused primarily by chimpanzee predation. This seems to be the first documented case of predation by one nonhuman primate causing the population decline in another. We evaluated disease and interspecific competition as other possible causes of the red colobus decline, but judged them to be relatively insignificant compared with predation by chimpanzees. Notable changes in encounter rates with other primate species may have resulted from forest expansion. Those for mangabeys, redtails, and black and white colobus increased significantly. Encounter rates increased for l'Hoest's monkeys too, but the increased sightings may have been an artifact of increased habituation. Sightings of blue monkey and baboon groups declined. There was no significant change in encounter rates for all species combined. The Ngogo primate community seemed to be in a nonequilibrium state, changing from one dominated by two species, a folivore (red colobus) and a frugivorous omnivore (redtails), to one dominated by three species of frugivorous omnivores (redtails, mangabeys, and chimpanzees). This study demonstrates the importance of long‐term monitoring in understanding population dynamics and the role of intrinsic variables in shaping the species composition of a community. Am. J. Continuous monitoring of suspended sediment concentrations using image analytics and deriving inherent correlations by machine learning

    Get PDF
The barriers for the development of continuous monitoring of Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) in channels/rivers include costs and technological gaps but this paper shows that a solution is feasible by: (i) using readily available high-resolution images; (ii) transforming the images into image analytics to form a modelling dataset; and (iii) constructing predictive models by learning inherent correlation between observed SSC values and their image analytics. High-resolution images were taken of water containing a series of SSC values using an exploratory flume. Machine learning is processed by dividing the dataset into training and testing sets and the paper uses the following models: Generalized Linear Machine (GLM) and Distributed Random Forest (DRF). Results show that each model is capable of reliable predictions but the errors at higher SSC are not fully explained by modelling alone. Here we offer sufficient evidence for the feasibility of a continuous SSC monitoring capability in channels before the next phase of the study with the goal of producing practice guidelines

Triacylglycerol Fatty Acid Composition in Diet-Induced Weight Loss in Subjects with Abnormal Glucose Metabolism – the GENOBIN Study

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The effect of weight loss on different plasma lipid subclasses at the molecular level is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine whether a diet-induced weight reduction result in changes in the extended plasma lipid profiles (lipidome) in subjects with features of metabolic syndrome in a 33-week intervention. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Plasma samples of 9 subjects in the weight reduction group and 10 subjects in the control group were analyzed using mass spectrometry based lipidomic and fatty acid analyses. Body weight decreased in the weight reduction group by 7.8+/-2.9% (p<0.01). Most of the serum triacylglycerols and phosphatidylcholines were reduced. The decrease in triacylglycerols affected predominantly the saturated short chain fatty acids. This decrease of saturated short chain fatty acid containing triacylglycerols correlated with the increase of insulin sensitivity. However, levels of several longer chain fatty acids, including arachidonic and docosahexanoic acid, were not affected by weight loss. Levels of other lipids known to be associated with obesity such as sphingolipids and lysophosphatidylcholines were not altered by weight reduction. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Diet-induced weight loss caused significant changes in global lipid profiles in subjects with abnormal glucose metabolism. The observed changes may affect insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in these subjects. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00621205

    Get PDF
Children of incarcerated parents are a relatively invisible group in the public debate, even though they are many in number. In Finland, there are estimated to be 10,000 children to incarcerated parents. According to previous research, the amount of detainees increases, resulting in a growing challenge to pair penalty systems to family and children. The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about being a child to incarcerated parents, focusing on identity, life situation and peer support from a child's perspective. Justification for the purpose is to obtain knowledge for Krits about how children see themselves and their situation, as a child of an incarcerated parent, as well as a knowledge base to evaluate the service for further development, so that the peer support services provides the greatest possible benefits to children in their life situation. The study highlighted on the following questions: How do the children see themselves, how children manage their situation in life, and how children experience the peer support group. The theoretical framework is based on a social pedagogical perspective, with em-phasis on empowerment, stigma, shame and social inheritance, based on previous research also showing that these themes are vital in the contexts in which children of incarcerated parents are involved. The study is designed as a qualitative study using observation and interview for collecting data. The observations and interviews were held during the fall and winter of 2013, in a peer support group organized by Kriminaalihuollon tukisäätiö ry Krits and Helsingin Seurakuntayhtymä 's youth activities. The informants were four children aged eight to twelve years when the study was held. The results show that the children have a great need to be able to speak out their thoughts about their feelings, their parent's situation, their own situation and their identity in envi-ronments where they do not have to worry about being exposed to stigma and shame -filled emotions. Each informant thought the peer support as a necessary thing. The results indicate that a reliable peer support group can be beneficial for children who have an in-carcerated parent.Vankien lapset ovat suhteellisen näkymätön ryhmä yhteiskunnallisessa keskustelussa, vaikka heitä määrällisesti on aika lailla. Suomessa arvioidaan olevan 10000 lasta, joilla on vanhempi vankilassa. Tutkielma pureutuu aiheeseen seuraavien kysymyksien pohjalta: Miten lapsi kokee oman identiteettinsä, kuinka lapsi kokee oman elämäntilanteensa ja miten lapsi kokee vertaistukitoiminnan. Tutkielman viitekehys on pitkälti sosiaalipedagoginen, keskittyen keskeisiin aiheisiin kuten voimaatuminen, stigma, häpeä ja sosiaalinen perintö. Valinta perustuu aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa esiin tulleista tärkeistä aiheista, joita on hyvä käsi-tellä aiheyhteydessä kun puhutaan vankien lapsista. Tutkielma on kvalitatiivinen työ.
