    Study of the building and decorative materials and techniques used in Hungarian Roman sites

    The aims of this research were: - To identify the characteristics, properties and provenance of the building and decorative material found in three Hungarian Roman sites: Nagyharsány, Nemesvámos-Balácapuszta and Aquincum - To provide a database of information on the different sites - To have an overview of main conservation strategies applied in Hungary. Geological studies, macroscopical and microscopical observations, XRD investigations, physical and chemical analyses allowed us to define the characteristics and properties of the different kinds of collected materials. Building stones sampled from Nagyharsány site showed two different kinds of massive limestone belonging to the areas surrounding the villa. Also Building stones sampled from Nemesvámos-Balácapuszta Roman villa proved to be compatible with limestone belonging to local sources. Mural painting fragments show that all samples are units composed of multilayered structures. Mosaic tesserae can be classified as following: -Pale yellow , blackish and pink tesserae are comparable with local limestone; -White tessera, composed of marble, was probably imported from distant regions of the Empire, as the usual practice of Romans. Mortars present different characteristics according to the age, the site and the functions: -Building mortars are generally lime based, white or pale yellow in colour, present a high percentage of aggregates represented by fine sand; -Supporting mortars from both mosaics and mural paintings are reddish or pinkish in colour, due to the presence of high percentage of brick dust and tiles fragments, and present a higher content of MgO. Although the condition of the sites, there is an insignificant content of soluble salts. Database The whole study has allowed us to provide work sheets for each samples, including all characteristics and properties. Furthermore, all sites included in the frame of the research have been described and illustrated on the base of their floor plans, material and construction methodologies. It can be concluded that: 1. In Nagyharsány Archaeological site, it is possible to define a sequence of different construction phases on the base of the study of building material and mortars. The results are comparable with the chronology of the site provided by the archaeologists 2. The material used for construction was of local origin while the more precious ones, used for decorative elements, were probably imported from long distance 3. Construction techniques in Hungary mainly refer to the usual Roman knowledge and practice (Vitruvius); few differences have been found 4. The database will represent an archive for Archaeologists, Historians and Conservators dealing with Roman period in Hungary

    Lumbar vertebral canal stenosis due to marked bone overgrowth after routine hemilaminectomy in a dog

    Bone overgrowth after decompressive surgery for lumbar stenosis resulting in recurrence of neurological signs has not been reported in veterinary literature. However, there are few cases described in human medicine. A 13-month-old entire female dog, a crossbreed between a Springer Spaniel and a Border Collie, weighing 24 kg, was referred with a 5-day history of progressive spastic paraplegia, indicative of a T3-L3 myelopathy. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a right-sided L2-L3 compressive extradural lesion, compatible with epidural haemorrhage, which was confirmed by histopathology. The lesion was approached via right-sided L2-L3 hemilaminectomy and was successfully removed. One-year postoperatively the dog re-presented with pelvic limb ataxia. MR and computed tomography (CT) images demonstrated excessive vertebral bone formation affecting the right articular processes, ventral aspect of the spinous process of L2-L3, and contiguous vertebral laminae, causing spinal cord compression. Revision surgery was performed, and histopathology revealed normal or reactive osseous tissue with a possible chondroid metaplasia and endochondral ossification, failing to identify a definitive reason for the bone overgrowth. Nine-month postoperatively, imaging studies showed a similar vertebral overgrowth, resulting in minimal spinal cord compression. The patient remained stable with mild proprioceptive ataxia up until the last follow-up 18 months post-revision surgery. This is the first report in the veterinary literature of bone overgrowth after lumbar hemilaminectomy which resulted in neurological deficits and required a revision decompressive surgery

    Change of Fagotti score is associated with outcome after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

    OBJECTIVE To investigate whether a change in the Fagotti score (ΔFagotti) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy is predictive of resection to no residual disease (R0) and survival in women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. METHODS Women treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer between January 2012 and June 2021 at the Bern University Hospital were included in this retrospective cohort study. Fagotti scores before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment were assessed for a potential association with resection status at interval debulking surgery defined as no residual disease (R0), macroscopic residual disease with a diameter of 0.1-1 cm (R1) or >1 cm (R2), and survival. RESULTS During the study period, 130 patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, mainly in response to advanced ovarian cancer International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages IIIC (68.5%) or IV (20.8%). 91 patients (70%) experienced a relapse and 81 (62%) died due to their disease. Median overall survival was 40 months (95% CI 30.6 to 49.4). Fagotti scores dropped from a mean of 7.8 (95% CI 7.14 to 8.42) at diagnosis to 3.9 (95% CI 3.34 to 4.46, p<0.001) after neoadjuvant therapy. This decrease was associated with resection status during interval debulking surgery (mean ΔFagotti -4.9 in R0, -2.2 in R1, -0.6 in R2, p<0.001). Women whose Fagotti score declined more than 2 points after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (n=51/88, 58%) survived significantly longer (median overall survival of 42 vs 32 months, p=0.048). CONCLUSION Fagotti scores and ΔFagotti scores are associated with complete cytoreduction at interval debulking surgery and longer overall survival in women treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. These markers are valuable for individualized patient treatment planning and should always be performed after neoadjuvant therapy

    Social Structure Analysis in Internet of Vehicles

    International audienceInternet, in its most recent evolution, is going to be the playground where a multitude of heterogeneous interconnected " things " autonomously exchange information to accomplish some tasks or to provide a service. Recently, the idea of giving to those smart devices the capability to organize themselves according to a social structure, gave birth to the so-called paradigm of the Social Internet of Things. The expected benefits of SIoT range from the enhanced effectiveness, scalability and speed of the navigability of the network of interconnected objects, to the provision of a level of trustworthiness that can be established by averaging the social relationships among things that are " friends ". Bearing in mind the beneficial effects of social components in IoT, we consider a social structure in a vehicular context i.e., Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV). In SIoV, smart vehicles build social relationships with other social objects they might come into contact, with the intent of creating an overlay social network to be exploited for information search and dissemination for vehicular applications. In this paper, we aim to investigate the social behavior of vehicles in SIoV and how it is affected by mobility patterns.     The unusual association of Graves' disease, chronic spontaneous urticaria, and premature ovarian failure: report of a case and HLA haplotype characterization

    Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), defined as the occurrence of spontaneous wheals for more than six weeks, has been associated with autoimmune diseases. Herein, we report the unusual association of CSU, Graves' disease, and premature ovarian failure. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) studies were performed. A 36-year-old woman presented symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism for three months. In the same period, the patient complained of widespread urticarial wheals, intensely itchy, and poorly responsive to therapy with antihistaminic agents. Hyperthyroidism was confirmed biochemically, and treatment with methimazole was started. As hyperthyroidism improved, a marked improvement in her urticaria was also observed. However, the patient continued to complain of amenorrhea. Endocrine evaluation, at the age 38, was consistent with premature ovarian failure. This is the first report of coexistence of GD, CSU, and POF. The genetic background of such unusual association is a specific combination of HLA

    Development and validation of a new standardized measure for assessing experiences of discrimination within mental health services. A participatory research project

    Aims: People with mental disorders frequently report experiences of discrimination within mental health services, which can have significant detrimental effects on individuals' well-being and recovery. This study aimed to develop and validate a new standardized measure aiming to assess experiences of stigmatization among people with mental disorders within mental health services. Methods: The scale was developed in Italian and tested for ease of use, comprehension, acceptability, relevance of items and response options within focus group session. A cross-sectional validation survey was conducted among mental health service users in Italy. Exploratory factor analysis with Promax oblique rotation, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy and the Bartlett's test of sphericity were used to assess the suitability of the sample for factor analysis. Reliability was assessed as internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha and as test-retest reliability using weighted kappa and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Precision was examined by Kendall's tau-b coefficient. Results: Overall, 240 people with mental disorders participated in the study; 56 also completed the retest evaluation after 2 weeks. The 18 items of the scale converged over a two-factor solution ('Dignity violation and personhood devaluation' and 'Perceived life restrictions and social exclusion'), accounting for 56.4% of the variance (KMO 0.903; Bartlett's test p&nbsp;&lt;&nbsp;0.001). Cronbach's alpha for the total score was 0.934. The scale showed one item with kappa above 0.81, four items between 0.61 and 0.80, ten items between 0.41 and 0.60, two items between 0.21 and 0.40 and only one item below 0.20. ICC was 0.928 (95% CI 0.877-0.958). Kendall's tau-b ranged from 0.450 to 0.617 (p&nbsp;&lt;&nbsp;0.001). Conclusions: The newly developed scale represents a valid and reliable measure for assessing experiences of stigma among patients receiving care within mental health services. The scale has provided initial evidence of being specifically tailored for individuals with psychotic and bipolar disorders. However, the factorial structure of the scale should be replicated through a confirmatory factor analysis on a larger sample of individuals with these conditions
