Polyphylla aeolus La Rue, new species, is described from the Kelso Sand Dunes, Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, California, U.S.A. Illustrations of dorsal habitus, significant morphological details, and adult genitalic forms are provided. A description of the type locality including geographical and ecological parameters is presented. Taxonomic problems within the genus and limitations of recently proposed methods of species identification are discussed. A modified key is provided to distinguish the new species. The heretofore undescribed females of Polyphylla anteronivea Hardy, P. mescalerensis Young, P. nubila Van Dyke, and P. pottsorum Hardy, are described. The larval host of P. erratica Hardy is reported, and the adult female is redescribed from pristine specimens. A dorsal habitus illustration of each female is provided. Bionomic and distributional data are presented for Polyphylla avittata Hardy, P. cavifrons LeConte, P. hirsuta Van Dyke, P. monahansensisHardy, P. petiti Guerin, P. stellata Young, andP. squamiventris Cazier

Impending anterior ischemic optic neuropathy with elements of retinal vein occlusion in a patient on interferon for polycythemia vera.

We describe the course and likely pathophysiology of impending anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) and retinal vein occlusion in a 56-year-old man with polycythemia vera managed with interferon alpha for 2 years. Our patient presented with decreased vision, scintillating scotomata, and floaters. Fundus examination findings and results of a fluorescein angiogram led to the diagnosis of impending AION and retinal vein occlusion. Considering that both polycythemia vera and interferon have possible influences on vascular occlusion and optic disc edema, we stopped interferon treatment and immediately attempted to treat the polycythemia vera empirically with pentoxifylline and any interferon-associated inflammation with prednisone. Our patient experienced complete resolution of fundus abnormalities and return of normal vision within 3 weeks, which may be attributed to our successful treatment of both etiologies. Thus, further study is warranted to elucidate the treatment of both polycythemia vera and interferon-induced impending AION

Vernal conjunctivitis is a common external eye disease, particularly amongst children and young adults, characterized by severe itching, papillae formation and brownish colouration of the eyes among others. Various treatment modalities are available with their various side effects.Asix-week open study was carried out to evaluate the effect ofAspirin and Dexamethazone in the treatment of vernal conjunctivitis. Twenty four patients with a mean age of 12.42 5.77 years were included in the study. The patients were divided into four groups A, B, C, D. GroupAhad a combinedtherapyofAspirin and Dexamethazone (Maxidex0.1%of eye drop);Group B had Aspirin therapy with Placebo drops (Normal saline); Group C had Dexamethazone therapy alone while Group D had Placebo drops only.Amarked improvement of the clinical features of vernal conjunctivitis, namely itching, limbal or tarsal papillae, conjunctival or scleral discoloration were noted within 6 weeks in group A, B and C while the control group, D showed no improvement. Thus Aspirin and Dexamethazone reduced significantly the clinical features of vernal conjunctivitis. Using the t-test at

Four new species of the genus Polyphylla Harris (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) from the southwestern United States and Baja California, Mexico, are described and illustrated: Polyphylla anivallis, P. koso, P. morroensis, and P. socorriana. Two nomenclatural changes are proposed: Polyphylla ratcliffei Young is placed into synonymy with P. avittata Hardy and Andrews, new synonymy; P. uteana Tanner is removed from synonymy and reinstated as a valid species, reinstated status. The females of P. monahansensis Hardy and Andrews and P. stellata Young are described and illustrated. New distributional records and ecological associations are amended for P. avittata Hardy and Andrews, P. cavifrons LeConte, P. concurrens Casey, P. crinita LeConte, P. diffracta Casey, P. mescalerensis Young, P. petitii (Guérin-Méneville), and P. rugosipennis Casey. A checklist of the “Western Clade” species of Polyphylla, north of Mexico, is included.

Governing Asylum without ''Being There": Ghost Bureaucracy, Outsourcing, and the Unreachability of the State

    Get PDF
When, where, and how do asylum seekers encounter the state? Anyone seeking asylum in the Global North might meet state authorities of the country where they want to apply for international protection long before arriving at its borders. However, if the state often becomes “very present” by transcending its geopolitical margins in border control, once asylum seekers have managed to cross into national territory, the state frequently vanishes. Insufficient information, opaque proceedings, and difficulties in reaching state agencies, which dramatically increased with the COVID pandemic, often translate into a denial of asylum seekers’ rights and their exclusion from welfare programs. Moreover, following a widespread tendency to outsource public services, access to asylum and related welfare programmes are being increasingly mediated by a range of nonstate actors (such as NGOs, activist groups, companies, and individuals) acting as state agents. Drawing on the analysis of ethnographic results from Spain and Italy, this article proposes the concept of “ghost bureaucracy” to theorise the street-level bureaucrats from their absence and explore asylum seekers’ encounters with a seemingly powerful and omnipresent but unreachable state through closed offices, digital bureaucracy and third-party actors

Unearthing Charles Rolwing : the problem of documentation in the small museum.

    Get PDF
This Curatorial project examines issues that museums face in the documentation of permanent collections, using the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (KMAC) and its piece Angel, by Charles Rolwing, as specific examples. The project focuses on museum accession policy, with discussion of works from smaller collections, similar to KMAC, and from larger museums. Specifically, objects are accepted into the collection through acquisition or accession, the former referring to all donated objects accepted by the museum and the latter referring to objects accepted into the permanent collection. A proposed collection policy for KMAC is discussed, including the procedure by which objects are accepted into the collection, and the different ways KMAC could determine its policy for the future. The discussion of accession policy leads to my personal involvement in KMAC and the organization of the permanent collection. The catalogue and accession numbering process implemented by many museums is discussed, demonstrating how these standards can be incorporated in the proposed catalogue for KMAC. Lastly, Charles Rolwing’s life as an artist is explored, illuminating the importance of thorough research before fully accessioning objects into the permanent collection of the museum
