    NGC 4337: an over-looked old cluster in the inner disc of the Milky Way

    Galactic open clusters do not survive long in the high density regions of the inner Galactic disc. Inside the solar ring only 11 open clusters are known with ages older than one Gyr. We show here, basing on deep, high-quality photometry, that NGC 4337, contrary to earlier findings, is indeed an old open cluster. The cluster is located very close to the conspicuous star cluster Trumpler 20, as well mis-classified in the past, and that has received so much attention in recent years. NGC 4337 shows a significant clump of He-burning stars which was not detected previously. Its beautiful color-magnitude diagram is strikingly similar to the one of the classical old open clusters IC 4651, NGC 752, and NGC 3680, and this suggests similar age and composition. A spectroscopic study is much needed to confirm our findings. This, in turn, would also allow us to better define the inner disc radial abundance gradient and its temporal evolution.To this aim, a list of clump star candidates is provided.Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps figures, in press as MNRAS Lette

    The thickening of the thin disk in the third Galactic quadrant

    In the third Galactic quadrant (180 < l < 270) of the Milky Way, the Galactic thin disk exhibits a significant warp ---shown both by gas and young stars--- bending down a few kpc below the formal Galactic plane (b=0). This warp shows its maximum at 240, in the direction of the Canis Major constellation. In a series of papers we have traced the detailed structure of this region using open star clusters, putting particular emphasis on the spiral structure of the outer disk. We noticed a conspicuous accumulation of young star clusters within 2-3 kpc from the Sun and close to b=0, that we interpreted as the continuation of the Local (Orion) arm towards the outer disk. While most clusters (and young stars in their background) follow closely the warp of the disk, our decade-old survey of the spiral structure of this region led us to identify three clusters, Haffner~18(1 and 2) and Haffner~19, which remain very close to b=0 and lie at distances (4.5, 8.0, and 6.4 kpc) where most of the material is already significantly warped. Here we report on a search for clusters that share the same properties as Haffner~18 and 19, and investigate the possible reasons for such an unexpected occurrence. We present UBVRI photometry of 5~young clusters, namely NGC~2345, NGC~2374, Trumpler~9, Haffner~20, and Haffner~21, which also lie close to the formal Galactic plane. With the exception of Haffner~20, in the background of these clusters we detected young stars that appear close to b=0, and are located at distances up to 8 kpc from the Sun, thus deviating significantly from the warp. These populations define a structure that distributes over almost the entire third Galactic quadrant.     Insulin and GLP-1 infusions demonstrate the onset of adipose-specific insulin resistance in a large fasting mammal: potential glucogenic role for GLP-1.

    Prolonged food deprivation increases lipid oxidation and utilization, which may contribute to the onset of the insulin resistance associated with fasting. Because insulin resistance promotes the preservation of glucose and oxidation of fat, it has been suggested to be an adaptive response to food deprivation. However, fasting mammals exhibit hypoinsulinemia, suggesting that the insulin resistance-like conditions they experience may actually result from reduced pancreatic sensitivity to glucose/capacity to secrete insulin. To determine whether fasting results in insulin resistance or in pancreatic dysfunction, we infused early- and late-fasted seals (naturally adapted to prolonged fasting) with insulin (0.065 U/kg), and a separate group of late-fasted seals with low (10 pM/kg) or high (100 pM/kg) dosages of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) immediately following a glucose bolus (0.5g/kg), and measured the systemic and cellular responses. Because GLP-1 facilitates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, these infusions provide a method to assess pancreatic insulin-secreting capacity. Insulin infusions increased the phosphorylation of insulin receptor and Akt in adipose and muscle of early and late fasted seals; however the timing of the signaling response was blunted in adipose of late fasted seals. Despite the dose-dependent increases in insulin and increased glucose clearance (high dose), both GLP-1 dosages produced increases in plasma cortisol and glucagon, which may have contributed to the glucogenic role of GLP-1. Results suggest that fasting induces adipose-specific insulin resistance in elephant seal pups, while maintaining skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, and therefore suggests that the onset of insulin resistance in fasting mammals is an evolved response to cope with prolonged food deprivation

    PyUPMASK: An improved unsupervised clustering algorithm

    Aims. We present pyUPMASK, an unsupervised clustering method for stellar clusters that builds upon the original UPMASK package. The general approach of this method makes it plausible to be applied to analyses that deal with binary classes of any kind as long as the fundamental hypotheses are met. The code is written entirely in Python and is made available through a public repository. Methods. The core of the algorithm follows the method developed in UPMASK but introduces several key enhancements. These enhancements not only make pyUPMASK more general, they also improve its performance considerably. Results. We thoroughly tested the performance of pyUPMASK on 600 synthetic clusters affected by varying degrees of contamination by field stars. To assess the performance, we employed six different statistical metrics that measure the accuracy of probabilistic classification. Conclusions. Our results show that pyUPMASK is better performant than UPMASK for every statistical performance metric, while still managing to be many times faster.Fil: Pera, María Sol.     The highly polarized open cluster Trumpler 27

    We have carried out multicolor linear polarimetry (UBVRI) of the brightest stars in the area of the open cluster Trumpler 27. Our data show a high level of polarization in the stellar light with a considerable dispersion, from P=4P = 4% to P=9.5P = 9.5%. The polarization vectors of the cluster members appear to be aligned. Foreground polarization was estimated from the data of some non-member objects, for which two different components were resolved: the first one associated with a dust cloud close to the Sun producing Pλmax=1.3P_{\lambda max}=1.3% and θ=146\theta=146 degrees, and a second component, the main source of polarization for the cluster members, originated in another dust cloud, which polarizes the light in the direction of θ=29.5\theta= 29.5 degrees. From a detailed analysis, we found that the two components have associated values EBV<0.45E_{B-V} < 0.45 for the first one, and EBV>0.75E_{B-V} > 0.75 for the other. Due the difference in the orientation of both polarization vectors, almost 90 degrees (180 degrees at the Stokes representation), the first cloud (θ146\theta \sim 146 degrees) depolarize the light strongly polarized by the second one (θ29.5\theta \sim 29.5 degrees).Comment: 12 Pages, 6 Figures, 2 tables (9 Pages), accepted for publication in A

    NGC 2660: Gaia DR2, ASteCA and the end of controversies?

    NGC 2660, un cumulo abierto viejo y muy compacto localizado a aproximadamente 3 kpc del Sol en una región de absorción moderada, ha sido objeto de varios estudios fotométricos y espectroscopicos en el pasado. Surgen controversias en cuanto a su distancia, antigüedad y contenido metalice. Las comparaciones llevadas a cabo por investigaciones anteriores con modelos sintéticos de cúmulos no las resolvieron. Decidimos analizar este objeto combinando paralaje de alta precisión, movimientos propios y magnitudes procedentes del Gaia Second Data Release (Gaia DR2) para mejorar los parámetros fundamentales del cumulo. Para ello seleccionamos los datos de Gaia DR2 en una región de 1 grado de lado centrada en NGC 2660. Para la identificación de miembros utilizamos el código pyUPMASK y completamos el análisis general del cumulo con el código ASteCA. La secuencia principal del cumulo muestra un turn-off point bien definido, aunque algunas estrellas se ubican por encima de el, en la posición típica de las estrellas blue stragglers. Hay un evidente ensanchamiento de la secuencia principal, que es difícil de atribuir solo a errores fotométricos, siendo mas probable que ella se deba a un alto porcentaje de estrellas binarias.NGC 2660, an old and very compact open cluster placed at about 3 kpc from the Sun in a region ofmoderate absorption, has been subject of several photometric and spectroscopic studies in the past. Controversies arise in terms of its distance, age and metal content. Previous comparisons with cluster synthetic models carried out did not resolve them. We decided to analyze this object combining high precision parallax, proper motions and magnitudes coming from the Gaia Second Data release (Gaia DR2), in order to improve the cluster fundamental parameters. So we collect Gaia DR2 data in region 1 deg on a side, centered in NGC 2660. For the membership estimation, we run the pyUPMASK code and completed the overall cluster analysis with the ASteCA code. The cluster main sequence shows a well-defined turn-off point although some stars are placed above it, resembling the typical position of blue straggler stars. There is an evident widening of the main sequence hard to be explained by just photometric errors becoming more probable that it is produced by a high percentage of binary stars.Fil: Giorgi, E. E..     Optical polarization observations of NGC 6231: evidence for a past SN fingerprint

    We present the first linear multicolor polarization observations for a sample of 35 stars in the direction of the Galactic cluster NGC 6231. We have found a complex pattern in the angles of the polarimetric vectors. Near the core of this cluster the structure shows a semi-circular pattern that we have interpreted as a re-orientation of the dust particles, showing the morphology of the magnetic field. We propose that a supernova event has occurred some time ago and produced a shock on the local ISM. We discuss in this paper independent confirmations othis event, both from the studies on the diffuse interstellar absorptions Crawford (2001) and the results of the pre-main sequence stars (PMS) given by Sung et al.     Temporal scale‐dependence of plant–pollinator networks

    The study of mutualistic interaction networks has led to valuable insights into ecological and evolutionary processes. However, our understanding of network structure may depend upon the temporal scale at which we sample and analyze network data. To date, we lack a comprehensive assessment of the temporal scale-dependence of network structure across a wide range of temporal scales and geographic locations. If network structure is temporally scale-dependent, networks constructed over different temporal scales may provide very different perspectives on the structure and composition of species interactions. Furthermore, it remains unclear how various factors – including species richness, species turnover, link rewiring and sampling effort – act in concert to shape network structure across different temporal scales. To address these issues, we used a large database of temporally-resolved plant–pollinator networks to investigate how temporal aggregation from the scale of one day to multiple years influences network structure. In addition, we used structural equation modeling to explore the direct and indirect effects of temporal scale, species richness, species turnover, link rewiring and sampling effort on network structural properties. We find that plant–pollinator network structure is strongly temporally-scale dependent. This general pattern arises because the temporal scale determines the degree to which temporal dynamics (i.e. phenological turnover of species and links) are included in the network, in addition to how much sampling effort is put into constructing the network. Ultimately, the temporal scale-dependence of our plant–pollinator networks appears to be mostly driven by species richness, which increases with sampling effort, and species turnover, which increases with temporal extent. In other words, after accounting for variation in species richness, network structure is increasingly shaped by its underlying temporal dynamics. Our results suggest that considering multiple temporal scales may be necessary to fully appreciate the causes and consequences of interaction network structure.Fil: Schwarz, Benjamin.     Hypothalamic AMPK-ER Stress-JNK1 Axis Mediates the Central Actions of Thyroid Hormones on Energy Balance

    Thyroid hormones (THs) act in the brain to modulate energy balance. We show that central triiodothyronine (T3) regulates de novo lipogenesis in liver and lipid oxidation in brown adipose tissue (BAT) through the parasympathetic (PSNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS), respectively. Central T3 promotes hepatic lipogenesis with parallel stimulation of the thermogenic program in BAT. The action of T3 depends on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-induced regulation of two signaling pathways in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH): decreased ceramide-induced endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress, which promotes BAT thermogenesis, and increased c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) activation, which controls hepatic lipid metabolism. Of note, ablation of AMPK alpha 1 in steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1) neurons of the VMH fully recapitulated the effect of central T3, pointing to this population in mediating the effect of central THs on metabolism. Overall, these findings uncover the underlying pathways through which central T3 modulates peripheral metabolism.Peer reviewe
