    This manuscript is part of a stream of continuing research examining market orientation within higher education and its potential impact on organizational performance. The organizations researched are business schools and the data collected came from chairpersons of accounting departments of AACSB member business schools. We use a reworded Narver and Slater (1990) market orientation scale and the Jaworski and Kohlis (1993) overall performance scale for use in the current research. 101 chairs of accounting departments whose schools are members of AACSB responded to the survey. The manuscript details the data collection and analysis processes, the statistical findings, along with implications and a call for additional subject matter research

    Market Orientation Effects On Business School Performance: Views From Inside And Outside The Business School

    In the world of higher education, organizational strategies may take the form of a research, teaching, student-centered, comprehensive, or international strategy, just to name a few.  This manuscript reports the results of a national survey examining the possible impacts of employing a market orientation strategy within schools of business and its possible impact on organizational performance.  The schools researched are member business schools of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB-International) and all of the schools studied are located in the United States.  The respondents to the survey are academic vice-presidents (outsiders) and deans (insiders) of colleges and universities holding membership in AACSB.  The academic vice-presidents were chosen as they are thought to hold the outside management position that can primarily affect the organizational strategy of the academic organizations under their purview.  The deans of the business schools were selected as they represent the highest inside level of leadership.  We use a reworded Narver and Slater (1990) “market orientation” scale and the Jaworski and Kohli’s (1993) “overall performance” scale in the current research.  One hundred sixteen academic vice-presidents and 131 business school deans responded to the survey.  The manuscript details the data collection and analysis, statistical results, and implications for university leaders of business schools as well as other academic leaders

    Customer And Market Orientation Within AACSB Member Business Schools: Comparative Views From Three Levels Of Administrators

    This paper is part of a stream of research dealing with customer and market orientation within higher education, specifically within business schools holding membership in AACSB-International. A market orientation strategy leading to a customer and market-oriented organizational culture is based upon the acceptance and adoption of the marketing concept.  The market-oriented organization recognizes the importance of coordinating the activities of all departments, functions, and individuals in the organization to satisfy customers by delivering superior value.  The market-oriented organization continually monitors customer information, competitor information, and marketplace information to design and provide superior value to its customers.  Theory and empirical research suggest that higher levels of customer and market orientation result in a greater ability of the organization to reach its objectives, in other words, higher levels of organizational performance.  This paper extends the current research on the use of the market orientation strategy by reporting and analyzing customer and market orientation levels (scores) toward two customer groups within AACSB member business schools.  The two customer groups studied were students and employers of students.  Data input from three separate administrative levels having responsibilities associated with the business school were collected and analyzed.  The administrators participating in the study were academic vice-presidents, business school deans and marketing department chairs. A critical underlying question in the research is whether students and employers of students are viewed as customers by higher education administrators.  Comparisons of the various reported scores are made against a benchmark established in the marketing literature and then are compared by administrative group against one another.  The university academic vice-presidents, business school deans, and marketing department chairs were surveyed by way of a national mail survey.  All administrators were from colleges or universities holding membership in AACSB-International. 102 Vice-Presidents, 141 Business School Deans, and 94 Marketing Department Chairs responded.  The paper presents details of the research process, findings, statistical inferences, and discusses the implications of the research for schools of business and academic marketing departments

    A New Thermal Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication Solver Implementation in OpenFOAM

    Designing effective thermal management systems within transmission systems requires simulations to consider the contributions from phenomena such as hydrodynamic lubrication regions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) remains computationally expensive for practical cases of hydrodynamic lubrication while the thermo elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) theory has demonstrated good accuracy at a lower computational cost. To account for the effects of hydro-dynamic lubrication in high-power transmission systems requires integrating TEHL into a CFD framework such that these methodologies can be interfaced. This study takes an initial step by developing a TEHL solver within OpenFOAM such that the program is prepared to be interfaced with a CFD module in future versions. The OpenFOAM solver includes the Elrod-Adams cavitation model, thermal effects, and elastic deformation of the surfaces, and considers mixing between the recirculating flow and oil feed by applying energy and mass continuity. A sensitivity study of the film mesh is presented to show the solution variation with refinement along the circumferential, axial and radial directions. A validation case is presented of an experimental single axial groove journal bearing which shows good agreement in the pressure and temperature results. The peak pressure in the film is predicted within 12% and the peak temperature in the bush is predicted within 5% when comparing the centerline profiles

    A machine learning-driven approach to predicting thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication in journal bearings

    Traditional methods of evaluating the performance of journal bearings, for example thermal-elastic-hydrodynamic- lubrication theory, are limited to simplified conditions that often fail to accurately model real-world components. Numerical models that include additional phenomena such as cavitation and fully coupled effects like deformation, temperature, pressure and viscosity can be more accurate but require a large amount of computational overhead, making analysis slower and more costly. To address this limitation, a novel machine learning-driven approach is developed to predict the 2D distribution of surface deformation, film thickness, temperature, and pressure across the bearing surface as a function of design variables such as load and speed. The training dataset, generated using a fully coupled Reynolds’ Equation solver implemented in OpenFOAM, contains a significantly extended range of conditions than in previous studies with approximately 39 000 000 points encompassing 4925 different test cases. Modelled bearing speeds range from 2000 to 10 000 rpm, while load values are varied between 1 and 30 kN. Predicting surface deformation, film thickness, temperature and pressure across the bearing surface results in a mean absolute percentage error below 0.4 % or better. The work also demonstrates that the trained models have a strong ability to generalise the prediction beyond the original training data range with only a 1 % error at up to 200 % of the highest trained speed. This work also demonstrates that machine learning-based processes are a practical alternative to physics-based numerical modelling, especially in cases where rapid performance evaluation is desired as real-time calculation is possible with significantly reduced computational cost. This has the potential to enable development of rapid design optimisation tools and real-time performance monitoring at high resolution and with low latency. Using consumer hardware, it is found that the neural network-based approach is faster than the existing numerical modelling technique by a factor of over 10 000, enabling real-time predictions of lubrication systems

    Is health research undertaken where the burden of disease is greatest? Observational study of geographical inequalities in recruitment to research in England 2013–2018

    Background: Research is fundamental to high-quality care, but concerns have been raised about whether health research is conducted in the populations most affected by high disease prevalence. Geographical distribution of research activity is important for many reasons. Recruitment is a major barrier to research delivery, and undertaking recruitment in areas of high prevalence could be more efficient. Regional variability exists in risk factors and outcomes, so research done in healthier populations may not generalise. Much applied health research evaluates interventions, and their impact may vary by context (including geography). Finally, fairness dictates that publically funded research should be accessible to all, so that benefits of participating can be fairly distributed. We explored whether recruitment of patients to health research is aligned with disease prevalence in England. Methods: We measured disease prevalence using the Quality and Outcomes Framework in England (total long-term conditions, mental health and diabetes). We measured research activity using data from the NIHR Clinical Research Network. We presented descriptive data on geographical variation in recruitment rates. We explored associations between the recruitment rate and disease prevalence rate. We calculated the share of patient recruitment that would need to be redistributed to align recruitment with prevalence. We assessed whether associations between recruitment rate and disease prevalence varied between conditions, and over time. Results: There was significant geographical variation in recruitment rates. When areas were ranked by disease prevalence, recruitment was not aligned with prevalence, with disproportionately low recruitment in areas with higher prevalence of total long-term and mental health conditions. At the level of 15 local networks, analyses suggested that around 12% of current recruitment activity would need to be redistributed to align with disease prevalence. Overall, alignment showed little change over time, but there was variation in the trends over time in individual conditions. Conclusions: Geographical variations in recruitment do not reflect the suitability of the population for research. Indicators should be developed to assess the fit between research and need, and to allow assessment of interventions among funders, researchers and patients to encourage closer alignment between research activity and burden

    An exploratory study to assess the activity of the acarine growth inhibitor, fluazuron, against Sarcoptes scabei infestation in pigs

    Background: The most common treatments for scabies in human and veterinary settings are topical 5% permethrin or systemic treatment with ivermectin. However, these treatments have very little activity against arthropod eggs, and therefore repeated treatment is frequently required. In-vitro, biochemical and molecular studies have demonstrated that human mites are becoming increasingly resistant to both acaricides. To identify alternate acaricides, we undertook a pilot study of the in vivo activity of the benzoylphenyl urea inhibitor of chitin synthesis, fluazuron, in pigs with sarcoptic mange. Findings. Pigs (n = 5) were infested with S. scabei var suis, and randomised to treatment at the start of peak infestation with fluazuron at a dose of 10 mg/kg/day per os for 7 days (n = 3) or no treatment (n = 2). Clinical scores, skin scrapings for mite counts and blood sampling for pharmacokinetic analysis were undertaken. Fluazuron was well absorbed in treated pigs with measureable blood levels up to 4 weeks post treatment. No adverse effects were observed. Modest acaricidal activity of the compound was observed, with a reduction in severity of skin lesions in treated pigs, as well as a reduction in number of scabies mite's early life stages. Conclusions: The moderate efficacy of fluazuron against scabies mites indicates a lead to the development of alternate treatments for scabies, such as combination therapies that maybe applicable for human use in the future
