An application of miniscale experiments on Earth to refine microgravity analysis of adiabatic multiphase flow in space
Adiabatic two-phase flow is of interest to the design of multiphase fluid and thermal management systems for spacecraft. This paper presents original data and unifies existing data for capillary tubes as a step toward assessing existing multiphase flow analysis and engineering software. Comparisons of theory with these data once again confirm the broad accuracy of the theory. Due to the simplicity and low cost of the capillary tube experiments, which were performed on earth, we were able to closely examine for the first time a flow situation that had not previously been examined appreciably by aircraft tests. This is the situation of a slug flow at high quality, near transition to annular flow. Our comparison of software calculations with these data revealed overprediction of pipeline pressure drop by up to a factor of three. In turn, this finding motivated a reexamination of the existing theory, and then development of a new analytical and is in far better agreement with the data. This sequence of discovery illustrates the role of inexpensive miniscale modeling on earth to anticipate microgravity behavior in space and to complete and help define needs for aircraft tests
The effect of omega-3 fatty acids on central nervous system remyelination in fat-1 mice
Background There is a large body of experimental evidence suggesting that
omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are capable of modulating
immune function. Some studies have shown that these PUFAs might have a
beneficial effect in patients suffering form multiple sclerosis (MS), a
chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system
(CNS). This could be due to increased n-3 PUFA-derived anti-inflammatory lipid
mediators. In the present study we tested the effect of an endogenously
increased n-3 PUFA status on cuprizone-induced CNS demyelination and
remyelination in fat-1 mice versus their wild-type (wt) littermates. Fat-1
mice express an n-3 desaturase, which allows them to convert n-6 PUFAs into
n-3 PUFAs. Results CNS lipid profiles in fat-1 mice showed a significant
increase of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels but similar docosahexaenoic
acid levels compared to wt littermates. This was also reflected in
significantly higher levels of monohydroxy EPA metabolites such as
18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (18-HEPE) in fat-1 brain tissue. Feeding fat-1
mice and wt littermates 0.2% cuprizone for 5 weeks caused a similar degree of
CNS demyelination in both groups; remyelination was increased in the fat-1
group after a recovery period of 2 weeks. However, at p = 0.07 this difference
missed statistical significance. Conclusions These results indicate that n-3
PUFAs might have a role in promotion of remyelination after toxic injury to
CNS oligodendrocytes. This might occur either via modulation of the immune
system or via a direct effect on oligodendrocytes or neurons through EPA-
derived lipid metabolites such as 18-HEPE
Gauge invariances of higher derivative Maxwell-Chern-Simons field theory -- a new Hamiltonian approach
A new method of abstracting the independent gauge invariances of higher
derivative systems, recently introduced in [1], has been applied to higher
derivative field theories. This has been discussed taking the extended
Maxwell-Chern-Simons model as an example. A new Hamiltonian analysis of the
model is provided. This Hamiltonian analysis has been used to construct the
independent gauge generator. An exact mapping between the Hamiltonian gauge
transformations and the U(1) symmetries of the action has been established.Comment: 16 pages, no figure. Title and abstract modified, new references

In vivo detection of teriflunomide-derived fluorine signal during neuroinflammation using fluorine MR spectroscopy
BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is indispensable for diagnosing neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). MRI also supports decisions regarding the choice of disease-modifying drugs (DMDs). Determining in vivo tissue concentrations of DMDs has the potential to become an essential clinical tool for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). The aim here was to examine the feasibility of fluorine-19 ((19)F) MR methods to detect the fluorinated DMD teriflunomide (TF) during normal and pathological conditions. METHODS: We used (19)F MR spectroscopy to detect TF in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS) in vivo. Prior to the in vivo investigations we characterized the MR properties of TF in vitro. We studied the impact of pH and protein binding as well as MR contrast agents. RESULTS: We could detect TF in vivo and could follow the (19)F MR signal over different time points of disease. We quantified TF concentrations in different tissues using HPLC/MS and showed a significant correlation between ex vivo TF levels in serum and the ex vivo (19)F MR signal. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the feasibility of (19)F MR methods to detect TF during neuroinflammation in vivo. It also highlights the need for further technological developments in this field. The ultimate goal is to add (19)F MR protocols to conventional (1)H MRI protocols in clinical practice to guide therapy decisions
Area of exposure and treatment challenges of malaria in Eritrean migrants: a GeoSentinel analysis
Background: Recent reports highlight malaria as a frequent diagnosis in migrants who originate from Eritrea. A descriptive analysis of GeoSentinel cases of malaria in Eritrean migrants was done together with a literature review to elucidate key attributes of malaria in this group with a focus on possible areas of acquisition of malaria and treatment challenges. Results: A total of 146 cases were identified from the GeoSentinel database from 1999 through September 2017, with a marked increase in 2014 and 2015. All patients originated from Eritrea and the main reporting GeoSentinel sites were in Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Israel and Germany. The majority of patients (young adult males) were diagnosed with malaria following arrival in the host country. All patients had a possible exposure in Eritrea, but may have been exposed in documented transit countries including Ethiopia, Sudan and possibly Libya in detention centres. Most infections were due to Plasmodium vivax (84.2%), followed by Plasmodium falciparum (8.2%). Two patients were pregnant, and both had P. vivax malaria. Some 31% of the migrants reported having had malaria while in transit. The median time to onset of malaria symptoms post arrival in the host country was 39days. Some 66% of patients were hospitalized and nine patients had severe malaria (according to WHO criteria), including five due to P. vivax. Conclusion: sThe 146 cases of mainly late onset, sometimes severe, P. vivax malaria in Eritrean migrants described in this multi-site, global analysis reflect the findings of single-centre analyses identified in the literature search. Host countries receiving asylum-seekers from Eritrea need to be prepared for large surges in vivax and, to a lesser extent, falciparum malaria, and need to be aware and prepared for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency testing and primaquine treatment, which is difficult to procure and mainly unlicensed in Europe. There is an urgent need to explore the molecular epidemiology of P. vivax in Eritrean asylum-seekers, to investigate the area of acquisition of P. vivax along common transit routes and to determine whether there has been re-introduction of malaria in areas, such as Libya, where malaria is considered eliminated, but where capable vectors and Plasmodium co-circulate

Prevalence of Influenza A viruses in wild migratory birds in Alaska: Patterns of variation in detection at a crossroads of intercontinental flyways
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The global spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus has stimulated interest in a better understanding of the mechanisms of H5N1 dispersal, including the potential role of migratory birds as carriers. Although wild birds have been found dead during H5N1 outbreaks, evidence suggests that others have survived natural infections, and recent studies have shown several species of ducks capable of surviving experimental inoculations of H5N1 and shedding virus. To investigate the possibility of migratory birds as a means of H5N1 dispersal into North America, we monitored for the virus in a surveillance program based on the risk that wild birds may carry the virus from Asia.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 16,797 birds sampled in Alaska between May 2006 and March 2007, low pathogenic avian influenza viruses were detected in 1.7% by rRT-PCR but no highly pathogenic viruses were found. Our data suggest that prevalence varied among sampling locations, species (highest in waterfowl, lowest in passerines), ages (juveniles higher than adults), sexes (males higher than females), date (highest in autumn), and analytical technique (rRT-PCR prevalence = 1.7%; virus isolation prevalence = 1.5%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The prevalence of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses isolated from wild birds depends on biological, temporal, and geographical factors, as well as testing methods. Future studies should control for, or sample across, these sources of variation to allow direct comparison of prevalence rates.</p
