    High-frequency ground motion amplification during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake explained by soil dilatancy

    Ground motions of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake recorded at Onahama port (Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture) rank among the highest accelerations ever observed, with the peak amplitude of the 3-D acceleration vector approaching 2g. The response of the site was distinctively non-linear, as indicated by the presence of horizontal acceleration spikes which have been linked to cyclic mobility during similar observations. Compared to records of weak ground motions, the response of the site during the Mw 9.1 earthquake was characterized by increased amplification at frequencies above 10 Hz and in peak ground acceleration. This behaviour contrasts with the more common non-linear response encountered at non-liquefiable sites, which results in deamplification at higher frequencies. We simulate propagation of SH waves through the dense sand deposit using a non-linear finite difference code that is capable of modelling the development of excess pore water pressure. Dynamic soil parameters are calibrated using a direct search method that minimizes the difference between observed and simulated acceleration envelopes and response spectra. The finite difference simulations yield surface acceleration time-series that are consistent with the observations in shape and amplitude, pointing towards soil dilatancy as a likely explanation for the high-frequency pulses recorded at Onahama port. The simulations also suggest that the occurrence of high-frequency spikes coincided with a rapid increase in pore water pressure in the upper part of the sand deposit between 145 and 170 s. This sudden increase is possibly linked to a burst of high-frequency energy from a large slip patch below the Iwaki regio

    Describing ancient horizontal gene transfers at the nucleotide and gene levels by comparative pathogenicity island genometrics

    Motivation: Lateral gene transfer is a major mechanism contributing to bacterial genome dynamics and pathovar emergence via pathogenicity island (PAI) spreading. However, since few of these genomic exchanges are experimentally reproducible, it is difficult to establish evolutionary scenarios for the successive PAI transmissions between bacterial genera. Methods initially developed at the gene and/or nucleotide level for genomics, i.e. comparisons of concatenated sequences, ortholog frequency, gene order or dinucleotide usage, were combined and applied here to homologous PAIs: we call this approach comparative PAI genometrics. Results: YAPI, a Yersinia PAI, and related islands were compared with measure evolutionary relationships between related modules. Through use of our genometric approach designed for tracking codon usage adaptation and gene phylogeny, an ancient inter-genus PAI transfer was oriented for the first time by characterizing the genomic environment in which the ancestral island emerged and its subsequent transfers to other bacterial genera.     Comparison of vitality states of finishers and withdrawers in trail running: An enactive and phenomenological perspective.

    Studies on ultra-endurance suggest that during the races, athletes typically experience three vitality states (i.e., preservation, loss, and revival) at the phenomenological level. Nevertheless, how these states contribute to the management and outcome of performance remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine whether and how the vitality states experienced by runners and their evolution during a trail race can be used to distinguish finishers from withdrawers. From an enactive and phenomenological framework, we processed enactive interviews and blog posts of race narratives. We distinguished units of meaning, which were grouped into sequences of experience; each sequence was then categorized as one of the three vitality states: state of vitality preservation (SVP), state of vitality loss (SVL) or state of vitality revival (SVR). We analyzed the distribution of these vitality states and their temporal organization at the beginning, in the second and third quarters, and at the end of the races, and we qualitatively characterized runners' adaptations to SVL. Results showed that finishers completed the race in SVP, with overall significantly more sequences in SVP and significantly fewer sequences in SVL than withdrawers. SVR did not discriminate finishers from withdrawers. The temporal organization of the vitality states showed a significant difference in the emergence of SVP from the second quarter of the race, as well as a significant difference in the emergence of SVL from the third quarter of the race. The analysis of adaptations to SVL confirmed that finishers were more capable of exiting SVL by enacting a preservation world when they felt physical or psychological alerts, whereas withdrawers remained in SVL. Our results showed that finishers and withdrawers did not enact the same phenomenological worlds in the race situation, especially in the organization of vitality adaptations and their relationships to difficulties; the cumulative effect of the succession of experienced vitality states differed, as well

    Estimation of non-linear site response in a deep Alpine valley

    We simulate non-linear behaviour of soils during strong ground motion in the Rhône valley in southern Switzerland. Previous studies of the site response using weak ground motion, ambient noise and linear 3-D FD simulations suggest that the 2-D structure of the basin will lead to amplification factors of up to 12 in the frequency band between 0.5 and 10 Hz. To estimate the importance of non-linear soil behaviour during strong ground motion in the Rhône valley we simulate the response of a superficial soft layer with a fully non-linear 1-D finite difference code. The non-linear wave propagator is based on an effective stress constitutive soil model capable of predicting pore pressure evolution due to shear. We determine the required dilatancy parameters from laboratory analysis of soil samples using cyclic triaxial tests. In order to include the effect of the strong 2-D structure in our non-linear analysis synthetic seismograms are convolved with the transfer function of the basin and then propagated through a 1-D non-linear layer. We find that reduced amplification due to soil non-linearity can be expected at rock accelerations above 0.5 ms−2, and that de-amplification occurs at ground motion levels of approximately 2 ms−2. Nevertheless, the spectral accelerations simulated for the valley centre are still exceeding the design spectra at about 0.5 Hz for magnitudes above 6.0, which reflects the strong amplification of ground motion by the deep 2-D resonance of the basin. For frequencies above 1 Hz the design spectra are generally in agreement with the strongest simulated accelerations. We evaluate the occurrence of soil failure using the 5 per cent strain criterion as a function of hypocentral distance and magnitude. Results confirm observations of liquefaction reported after the 1855 Mw 6.4 earthquake of Visp, and they suggest that soil liquefaction may occur at distances beyond those predicted by empirical relations in the valley. Near the basin edge, however, the simulated liquefaction occurrence agrees with the empirical relations. These results suggest that the response of the whole structure needs to be simulated in order to estimate the non-linear seismic response of complex basins like the Rhône valle

    Preliminary investigation of Phase Doppler derived flux measurements in a wind tunnel for the sampling of orchard spray drift

    Air-assisted spray equipment used for horticultural cropping systems depend on high air velocities to project the spray as well as to open the canopy for greater droplet penetration and deposition. However, these sprayer-types are also at a heightened risk for spray drift as they possess the potential to place drift prone droplets in the atmosphere where they can be carried to off-target locations. Unfortunately, quantifying these droplets can be difficult and expensive using samplers such as high-volume air samplers, rotating rods and strings. However, while these measuring techniques may give some idea of flux, no particle information can be gained which is imperative to predicting the mass which may be the most prone to drift. In wind-tunnels and field studies, polyester and nylon strings have proven to be an efficient collecting surface. Therefore, it was the objective of this study to assess the potential for the use of a novel, field grade Phase Doppler Interferometer (PDI) as a replacement for strings as a sampler for driftable mass for orchard type sprayers

    Urine patch detection using LiDAR and RPAS/UAV produced photogrammetry

    In grazed dairy pastures, the largest N source for both nitrate (NO3-) leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is urine-N excreted by the animals. Additional application of N on urine patches as fertilizer may increase these losses so adapting N-fertilisation in these areas is necessary. The objective of this study was to examine the use of a tractor mounted LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system to accurately identify and quantify areas affect by excess N, such as urine and dung. To do so, a controlled experiment was designed in a paddock with no recent exposure to animals or N fertilisation. Synthetic urine was randomly applied within two 20m x 20m blocks and weekly LiDAR scans were taken for 5 weeks. LiDAR based contour maps of the pasture canopy were shown to accurately detect the asymmetric urine patches as well as calculate a percent area of urine based high N as early as one week after a simulated grazing event. Further, weekly flights were taken with a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS/UAV) to have aerial footage of the trial. Resulting mosaic of RGB and NIR images were used to create photogrammetric based contour maps. Both approaches (LiDAR and photogrammetry) show no significant difference in the identification and sizing of urine patch cluster

    Epicardial Ventricular Tachycardia Ablation for Which Patients?

    With the widespread use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, an increasing number of patients present with ventricular tachycardia (VT). Large multicentre studies have shown that ablation of VT successfully reduces recurrent VT and this procedure is being performed by an increasing number of centres. However, for a number of reasons, many patients experience VT recurrence after ablation. One important reason for VT recurrence is the presence of an epicardial substrate involved in the VT circuit which is not affected by endocardial ablation. Epicardial access and ablation is now frequently performed either after failed endocardial VT ablation or as first-line treatment in selected patients. This review will focus on the available evidence for identifying VT of epicardial origin, and discuss in which patients an epicardial approach would be benefitial

    The shorter the better? A follow-up analysis of 10-session psychiatric treatment including the motive-oriented therapeutic relationship for borderline personality disorder.

    There is little research on short-term treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD). While the core changes may occur only in long-term treatments, short-term treatments may enable the study of early generic processes of engagement in therapy and thus inform about effective treatment components. It was shown that a 10-session version of a psychiatric treatment was effective in reducing borderline symptoms at the end of this treatment [Kramer, U., Kolly, S., Berthoud, L., Keller, S., Preisig, M., Caspar, F., … Despland, J.-N. (2014). Effects of motive-oriented therapeutic relationship in a ten-session general psychiatric treatment for borderline personality disorder: A randomized controlled trial. Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, 83, 176-186.]. Also, it was demonstrated in a randomized design that adding the motive-oriented therapeutic relationship (MOTR), following an individualized case formulation based on Plan Analysis, further increased general outcome after session 10 and had a positive effect on the early changes in self-esteem and alliance. The present study focuses on the follow-up period after this initial treatment, examining treatment density and outcomes after 6 months and service utilization after 12 months. Outcome was measured using the OQ-45. Results on a sub-sample of N = 40 patients with available OQ-45 data at follow-up (n = 21 for MOTR-treatment, n = 19 for comparison treatment) showed maintenance of gains over the follow-up period, which did not differ between both conditions. It appeared for this sample that MOTR treatments, while using the same number of sessions, lasted more weeks (i.e., lower treatment density, defined as the number of sessions per week), when compared to the treatments without MOTR. Density marginally predicted symptom reduction at follow-up. Patients in MOTR treatments had a greater likelihood of entering structured psychotherapy after the initial sessions than patients in the comparison group. These results are overall consistent with earlier studies on short-term treatments for BPD and underline the importance of individualizing interventions, by using case formulations that rely on idiographic methods and integrative concepts

    Subclinical thyroid function and cardiovascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation

    Objective: To evaluate if subclinical thyroid dysfunction is associated with cardiovascular (CV) risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: Swiss-AF is a prospective cohort of community-dwelling participants aged ≥ 65 years with AF. Primary outcome was a composite endpoint of CV events (myocardial infarctions, stroke/transitory ischemic events, systemic embolism, heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, CV deaths). Secondary outcomes were component endpoints, total mortality, and AF-progression. Exposures were thyroid dysfunction categories, TSH and fT4. Sensitivity analyses were performed for amiodarone use, thyroid hormones use, and competing events. Results: 2415 patients were included (mean age: 73.2 years; 27% women). 196 (8.4%) had subclinical hypothyroidism and 53 (2.3%) subclinical hyperthyroidism. Subclinical thyroid dysfunction was not associated with CV events, during a median follow-up of 2.1 years (max 5 years): age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratio (adjHR) of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.69-1.41) for subclinical hypothyroidism and 0.55 (95% CI: 0.23-1.32) for subclinical hyperthyroidism. Results remained robust following multivariable adjustment and sensitivity analyses. In euthyroid patients, fT4 levels were associated with an increased risk for the composite endpoint and HF (adjHR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.04-2.05; adjHR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.08-2.66, respectively, for the highest quintile vs the middle quintile). Results remained similar following multivariable adjustment and remained significant for HF in sensitivity analyses. No association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and total mortality or AF-progression was found. Conclusions: Subclinical hypothyroidism was not associated with increased CV risk in AF patients. Higher levels of fT4 with normal TSH were associated with a higher risk for HF

    Novel bleeding risk score for patients with atrial fibrillation on oral anticoagulants, including direct oral anticoagulants

    Objective: Balancing bleeding risk and stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common challenge. Though several bleeding risk scores exist, most have not included patients on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). We aimed at developing a novel bleeding risk score for patients with AF on oral anticoagulants (OAC) including both vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and DOACs. Methods: We included patients with AF on OACs from a prospective multicenter cohort study in Switzerland (SWISS-AF). The outcome was time to first bleeding. Bleeding events were defined as major or clinically relevant non-major bleeding. We used backward elimination to identify bleeding risk variables. We derived the score using a point score system based on the β-coefficients from the multivariable model. We used the Brier score for model calibration (<0.25 indicating good calibration), and Harrel's c-statistics for model discrimination. Results: We included 2147 patients with AF on OAC (72.5% male, mean age 73.4 ± 8.2 years), of whom 1209 (56.3%) took DOACs. After a follow-up of 4.4 years, a total of 255 (11.9%) bleeding events occurred. After backward elimination, age > 75 years, history of cancer, prior major hemorrhage, and arterial hypertension remained in the final prediction model. The Brier score was 0.23 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.19–0.27), the c-statistic at 12 months was 0.71 (95% CI 0.63–0.80). Conclusion: In this prospective cohort study of AF patients and predominantly DOAC users, we successfully derived a bleeding risk prediction model with good calibration and discrimination
