    Get PDF
Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis (LCH), previously known as histiocytosis X, is a rare disease. Carbon and energy footprint analysis of tannery wastewater treatment: A Global overview

    Get PDF
In this study the carbon footprint and power demand of tannery wastewater treatment processes for the largest bovine leather producing regions were quantified and analysed. Moreover, we present a case in which we benchmarked the carbon footprint and energy demand analysis of tannery wastewater treatment to municipal wastewater treatment. We quantified the greenhouse gas direct and indirect emissions from tannery wastewater treatment facilities. Our results show that the total CO2-equivalent emission for tannery wastewater treatment is 1.49 103 tCO2,eq d−1. Moreover, the energy intensity of tannery wastewater treatment processes are evaluated at 3.9 kWh kg−1bCOD,removed, compared to 1.4 kWh kg−1bCOD,removed of municipal wastewater treatment processes. Based on this work in the field of tannery wastewater treatment, an effort to innovate suitable treatment trains and technologies has the strong potential to reduce the carbon footprint

    Three-frequency resonances in dynamical systems

    Get PDF
We investigate numerically and experimentally dynamical systems having three interacting frequencies: a discrete mapping (a circle map), an exactly solvable model (a system of coupled ordinary differential equations), and an experimental device (an electronic oscillator). We compare the hierarchies of three-frequency resonances we find in each of these systems. All three show similar qualitative behaviour, suggesting the existence of generic features in the parameter-space organization of three-frequency resonances.Comment: See home page http://lec.ugr.es/~julya

Level of leverage and business financial stability: Case of firms from Colombia and Argentina

    Get PDF
This paper aims to explain the effect of financial instability on the capital structure of firms in two emerging markets: Colombia and Argentina. For the analysis, the study uses an unbalanced panel dataset with 167 companies, with quarterly data between 2005 and 2015, and regressions with the random-effects method. The results show that lower liquidity level and losses during two or more consecutive quarters increase the level of leverage in companies; therefore, signs of financial insolvency lead firms to become over-indebted and to reproduce the same conditions that lead to the emergence of a financial crisisEste artículo busca explicar el efecto de la inestabilidad financiera en las firmas y su estructura de capital, en dos mercados emergentes: Colombia y Argentina.

The fourth-revolution in the water sector encounters the digital revolution

    Get PDF
The so-called fourth revolution in the water sector will encounter the Big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution. The current data surplus stemming from all types of devices together with the relentless increase in computer capacity is revolutionizing almost all existing sectors, and the water sector will not be an exception. Combining the power of Big data analytics (including AI) with existing and future urban water infrastructure represents a significant untapped opportunity for the operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of urban water infrastructure to achieve economic and environmental sustainability. However, such progress may catalyze socio-economic changes and cross sector boundaries (e.g., water service, health, business) as the appearance of new needs and business models will influence the job market. Such progress will impact the academic sector as new forms of research based on large amounts of data will be possible, and new research needs will be requested by the technology industrial sector. Research and development enabling new technological approaches and more effective management strategies are needed to ensure that the emerging framework for the water sector will meet future societal needs. The feature further elucidates the complexities and possibilities associated with such collaborations.Manel Garrido-Baserba and Diego Rosso acknowledge the United States Department of Energy (CERC-WET US Project 525 2.5). Vascular reactivity and biomarkers of endothelial function in healthy subjects exposed to acute hypobaric hypoxia

    Get PDF
Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute hypobaric hypoxia (HH) on vascular reactivity and biochemical markers associated with endothelial function (EF). Main methods: Ten healthy subjects were exposed to a simulated altitude of 4,000. meters above sea level for 4. hours in a hypobaric chamber. Vascular reactivity was measured by the flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMVD) test. Endothelin-1, high sensitive-C reactive protein (hsCRP), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), paraoxonase and adiponectin levels, and FMVD were evaluated before and after the exposure. Key findings: Subjects were young (age: 32±6years), lean [body mass index: 23.9±2.0kg/m2, waist circumference: 77(IQR: 72-80) cm], and presented normal clinical and biochemical parameters. No significant changes were evidenced in FMVD in response to HH (pre: 0.45 (0.20-0.70) vs. during: 0.50 (0.20-1.22) mm; p=0.594). On the other hand, endothelin-1 (+54%, p<0.05), hsCRP (+37%, p<0.001), IL-6 (+75%, p<0.05), TNF-α (+75%, p<0.05), and adiponectin (-39%, p<0.01) levels were significantly altered post-HH. FMVD was increased in 7 subjects, and it was decreased in 3 individuals during HH exposure. Interestingly, when EF biomarkers were compared between these two subgroups of subjects, only post exposure-adiponectin levels were significantly different (49±5 vs. 38±6μg/ml, respectively, p<0.05). Significance: HH exposure had an effect on endothelin-1, adiponectin, hsCRP, IL-6, and TNF-α concentration. However, adiponectin was the only biomarker associated with an altered vascular reactivity.Fil: Iglesias, Diego. Sociedad Argentina de Medicina de Montaña; Argentina. Hospital Italiano; Argentina. A new AntTree-based algorithm for clustering short-text corpora

    Get PDF
Research work on "short-text clustering" is a very important research area due to the current tendency for people to use "small-language", e.g. blogs, textmessaging and others. In some recent works, new bioinspired clustering algorithms have been proposed to deal with this difficult problem and novel uses of Internal Clustering Validity Measures have also been presented. In this work, a new AntTree-based approach is proposed for this task. It integrates information on the Silhouette Coefficient and the concept of attraction of a cluster in different stages of the clustering process. The proposal achieves results comparable to the best reported results in this area, showing an interesting stability in the quality of the results and presenting some interesting capabilities as a general improvement method for arbitrary clustering approaches.Facultad de Informátic
