Stepping Stones to Inductive Synthesis of Low-Level Looping Programs
Inductive program synthesis, from input/output examples, can provide an
opportunity to automatically create programs from scratch without presupposing
the algorithmic form of the solution. For induction of general programs with
loops (as opposed to loop-free programs, or synthesis for domain-specific
languages), the state of the art is at the level of introductory programming
assignments. Most problems that require algorithmic subtlety, such as fast
sorting, have remained out of reach without the benefit of significant
problem-specific background knowledge. A key challenge is to identify cues that
are available to guide search towards correct looping programs. We present
MAKESPEARE, a simple delayed-acceptance hillclimbing method that synthesizes
low-level looping programs from input/output examples. During search, delayed
acceptance bypasses small gains to identify significantly-improved stepping
stone programs that tend to generalize and enable further progress. The method
performs well on a set of established benchmarks, and succeeds on the
previously unsolved "Collatz Numbers" program synthesis problem. Additional
benchmarks include the problem of rapidly sorting integer arrays, in which we
observe the emergence of comb sort (a Shell sort variant that is empirically
fast). MAKESPEARE has also synthesized a record-setting program on one of the
puzzles from the TIS-100 assembly language programming game.Comment: AAAI 201
Ritchey-Chretien Telescope
A Ritchey-Chretien telescope is described which was designed to respond to images located off the optical axis by using two transparent flat plates positioned in the ray path of the image. The flat plates have a tilt angle relative to the ray path to compensate for astigmatism introduced by the telescope. The tilt angle of the plates is directly proportional to the off axis angle of the image. The plates have opposite inclination angles relative to the ray paths. A detector which is responsive to the optical image as transmitted through the plates is positioned approximately on the sagittal focus of the telescope

Synchronization of Coupled Boolean Phase Oscillators
We design, characterize, and couple Boolean phase oscillators that include
state-dependent feedback delay. The state-dependent delay allows us to realize
an adjustable coupling strength, even though only Boolean signals are
exchanged. Specifically, increasing the coupling strength via the range of
state-dependent delay leads to larger locking ranges in uni- and bi-directional
coupling of oscillators in both experiment and numerical simulation with a
piecewise switching model. In the unidirectional coupling scheme, we unveil
asymmetric triangular-shaped locking regions (Arnold tongues) that appear at
multiples of the natural frequency of the oscillators. This extends
observations of a single locking region reported in previous studies. In the
bidirectional coupling scheme, we map out a symmetric locking region in the
parameter space of frequency detuning and coupling strength. Because of large
scalability of our setup, our observations constitute a first step towards
realizing large-scale networks of coupled oscillators to address fundamental
questions on the dynamical properties of networks in a new experimental
setting.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

The History of Territory Now Preserved as the Załęcze Nature Park
The area of the Załęcze Nature Park was mostly connected
with the city of Wieluń. Out of the total number of about 50 settlement units 7 date back to the Middle Ages. Two of them - Kamion
and Toporów - obtained civic rights in the mid 15th century. They,
however, lost their civic rights in the mid 17th century at the time
of a general economic decline of the entire country. Other settlements deteriorated economically at that time as well. Some improvement was recorded as from the end of the 18th century when new settlements began to be founded with a part of them having industrial
character (mills, forges, paper-mills). None the less, most of them
did not gain any bigger significance and several disappeared or were
deserted. The number of houses and in habitants in particular villages is given in three time cross - sections in Table I. From the events
on the national scale, the Second World War left its marks here (for
summary see page 128).Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 zostało dofinansowane ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
