Understanding touristsâ policing attitudes and travel intentions towards a destination during an on-going social movement
â©[2022, Emerald Publishing Limited]. This AAM is provided for your own personal use only. It may not be used for resale, reprinting, systematic distribution, emailing, or for any other commercial purpose without the permission of the publisher.Purpose
Policing activities aim to provide a safe environment for tourists. With the recent major protests that have erupted around the world, and the novel use of excessive police force against protestors, people may wonder if the policing deployment is for destination safety or to deter tourists from visiting. This paper aims to investigate anti-police and pro-police attitudes and tourists' behavioural responses towards a popular destination experiencing an ongoing social movement.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected between December 2019 and January 2020 (during the social movement). An online survey with a snowball sampling method was adopted to reach international tourists who were aware of the social movement in Hong Kong.
Findings
The results revealed that an individual with an anti-police attitude was found to be related to cognitive and affective destination images and perceived risks while those holding a pro-police attitude were more concerned with destination images only. No significant correlation was found between attitudes towards policing and travel intention.
Originality/value
This research presents a first attempt to investigate the relationship between tourists' policing attitudes and their behavioural responses during an ongoing social movement in a popular destination city
Pathogenetics of alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins.
Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (ACDMPV) is a lethal lung developmental disorder caused by heterozygous point mutations or genomic deletion copy-number variants (CNVs) of FOXF1 or its upstream enhancer involving fetal lung-expressed long noncoding RNA genes LINC01081 and LINC01082. Using custom-designed array comparative genomic hybridization, Sanger sequencing, whole exome sequencing (WES), and bioinformatic analyses, we studied 22 new unrelated families (20 postnatal and two prenatal) with clinically diagnosed ACDMPV. We describe novel deletion CNVs at the FOXF1 locus in 13 unrelated ACDMPV patients. Together with the previously reported cases, all 31 genomic deletions in 16q24.1, pathogenic for ACDMPV, for which parental origin was determined, arose de novo with 30 of them occurring on the maternally inherited chromosome 16, strongly implicating genomic imprinting of the FOXF1 locus in human lungs. Surprisingly, we have also identified four ACDMPV families with the pathogenic variants in the FOXF1 locus that arose on paternal chromosome 16. Interestingly, a combination of the severe cardiac defects, including hypoplastic left heart, and single umbilical artery were observed only in children with deletion CNVs involving FOXF1 and its upstream enhancer. Our data demonstrate that genomic imprinting at 16q24.1 plays an important role in variable ACDMPV manifestation likely through long-range regulation of FOXF1 expression, and may be also responsible for key phenotypic features of maternal uniparental disomy 16. Moreover, in one family, WES revealed a de novo missense variant in ESRP1, potentially implicating FGF signaling in the etiology of ACDMPV
COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study
Background:
The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms.
Methods:
International, prospective observational study of 60â109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms.
Results:
âTypicalâ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (â€â18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (â„â70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each Pâ<â0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country.
Interpretation:
This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men
An analysis of Canadian legislation on television advertising directed at children
The topic of this thesis is an analysis of Canadian legislation on television advertising directed at children. The purpose is to present an in-depth analysis of the present legislation and to discuss the relevance and effects it has on the advertising industry, the broadcasting industry and society as a whole. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first is concerned with a literature research of the major empirical studies done in the fields of education, psychology and sociology on the effects of television on children. The apparent lack of research data on the effects of television advertising on children is a loss but it is believed that due to the similarities of variables studied and the close interdependence of television and advertising, it is possible to infer from the evidence on effects of television on children to the effects of television advertising on children. The inference forms the major background material upon which the analysis is made. The second part is a discussion of legislation controlling advertising in general and whether it is adequate in providing protection to children. The third part is devoted to a discussion of the two provisions that deal specifically with the control of advertising directed at children, the Consumer Protection Act of Quebec and the Broadcast Code for Advertising to Children, to ascertain whether these are successful in granting the desired protection to children from objectionable advertising and whether this has been done adequately and relevantly. It is found that children devote more time to watching television than to any other activity; that they are highly imitative, especially of people they can identify with; that they are curious about almost everything and are most willing and ready to try out what they learn; that they are gullible and credulous and they do not interact the same way with television as with their parents, indicating that parental guidance and opinions are important deciding factors in their behavior patterns. While adults are usually defensive about advertising and legislation controlling advertising also takes into account our tendency to expect and condone a certain degree of puffery from advertisers, children in general lack the commercial knowledge and sophistication of cognitive development to acquire this defensive instinct and their simple mindedness and credulity make them 'preys' to advertisers. The standards of regulation of advertising directed at children are therefore necessarily higher than those used in general. There is no doubt that objective and verifiable standards of regulation are necessary. However, the tendency of present legislation to police opinions and values presented in advertising is dangerous. What we need in this society is a balanced presentation of everything and advertisement, being a reflector of society's values, should reflect all in a truthful manner.Business, Sauder School ofGraduat
Institutional analysis of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for oligometastatic lymph node metastases
Abstract Background In limited metastatic burden of disease, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has been shown to achieve high local control rates. It has been hypothesized that SBRT may translate to a better quality of life by delaying the need for systemic chemotherapy and possibly increasing survival. There is limited published literature on the efficacy of SBRT in limited nodal metastases. The primary aim is to review institutional outcomes of patients with solitary or oligometastatic lymph nodes treated with SBRT. Methods A retrospective study of patients treated with SBRT to metastatic lymph nodes (March 2010âJune 2015) was conducted. Endpoints of this study were local control (LC), chemotherapy-free survival (CFS) following SBRT, toxicities, progression free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Results Eighteen patients with a mean age of 65Â years underwent SBRT to metastatic lymph nodes. Median follow-up was 33.6Â months. There were four hepatocellular carcinoma, seven colorectal, four pancreatic, one esophageal, one gallbladder and one lung primary. Eleven (61%) patients had lymph node metastases at initial presentation of metastatic disease. Seven patients (39%) had systemic therapy prior to SBRT, with five patients receiving two lines of chemotherapy. Eight patients had solitary metastatic disease at the time of radiotherapy. All patients had <5 metastases. Median size of lymph node metastases was 1.95Â cm (range: 0.8â6.2Â cm). RT doses were 31 to 60Â Gy in four to ten fractions, with 44% of patients receiving 35Â Gy in 5 fractions. At 1Â year, LC was 94% and CFS from SBRT was 60%. One-year PFS and OS were 39% and 89% respectively. There were no grade 3 or higher toxicities. Conclusions In this single institution study, SBRT to oligometastatic lymph nodes provided excellent LC and a moderate chemotherapy-free interval with minimal toxicities. Disease progression remains prominent in these patients and larger studies are warranted to identify those who benefit most from SBRT
