Walker use, but not falls, is associated with lower physical functioning and health of residents in an assisted-living environment

The relationship between perceived health and walker use has seldom been addressed. Concerns over falls and falls risk are precursors to walker use. We compared the SF-36 scores of 26 women and 14 men, mean age 86.8 ± 6.0 years based on walker use and faller status. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with age as the covariate, compared groups for the SF-36 constructs and totals score. Significant differences were noted between walker users and nonusers in physical functioning, role limitations due to physical problems, general health, and the total SF-36 score. Pairwise comparisons favored nonusers, while no differences were seen due to faller status. Walker use is associated with lower self-perceptions of physical functioning, role limitations due to physical problems, and general health in assisted-living residents. Faller status is not associated with self-perceived health status. Although walker use aids mobility and lowers the probability of falls, further research is needed to determine if the prescription of assistive devices has a more negative impact on self-perceived health than does falling. This possibility could be explained, in part, by the greater activity levels of those individuals who do not depend on walkers

The effects of an active-assisted stretching program on functional performance in elderly persons: A pilot study

This study examined the impact of an eight-week active-assisted (AA) stretching program on functionality, mobility, power, and range of motion (ROM) in elderly residents of a residential retirement community. Seventeen volunteers (4 male, 13 female; 88.8 ± 5.36 years) were randomly assigned to an AA or control group. The AA group performed 10 different AA stretches targeting the major joints of the body twice weekly for eight weeks. Controls attended classes requiring limited physical activity. All participants were assessed using four flexibility and six functional tests, one week before and after the eight-week training period. A fully randomized repeated-measures ANCOVA with pretest scores as a covariate was used to detect differences between groups across time. The AA group demonstrated significant increases in ROM for most of the joints evaluated (p < 0.05) and significant increases in all performance measures (p < 0.05). Controls showed no improvements in functional or ROM measures (α = 0.05). Additionally, the AA group showed significantly better performance outcomes across the training period than controls. We conclude that our eight-week flexibility program effectively reduces age-related losses in ROM and improves functional performance in elderly persons with insufficient physical reserves to perform higher-intensity exercises

Chiral Unitary Approach To The N*N*pi, N*N*eta Couplings For The N*(1535) Resonance

Using a chiral unitary model in which the negative parity nucleon resonance N∗≡N∗(1535)N^\ast \equiv N^\ast(1535) is generated dynamically by means of the Bethe Salpeter equation with coupled meson baryon channels in the S=0S = 0 sector, we have obtained the π0N∗N∗\pi^0 N^\ast N^\ast and ηN∗N∗\eta N^\ast N^\ast couplings. The π0N∗N∗\pi^0 N^\ast N^\ast coupling has smaller strength and the same sign as the π0NN\pi^0 N N coupling. This rules out the mirror assignment of chiral symmetry where the ground state nucleon NN and the negative parity resonance N∗N^\ast are envisaged as chiral partners in the baryon sector.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures (ps files). Simple equations to predict concentric lower-body muscle power in older adults using the 30-second chair-rise test: a pilot study

    Get PDF
Although muscle power is an important factor affecting independence in older adults, there is no inexpensive or convenient test to quantify power in this population. Therefore, this pilot study examined whether regression equations for evaluating muscle power in older adults could be derived from a simple chair-rise test. We collected data from a 30-second chair-rise test performed by fourteen older adults (76 ± 7.19 years). Average (AP) and peak (PP) power values were computed using data from force-platform and high-speed motion analyses. Using each participant’s body mass and the number of chair rises performed during the first 20 seconds of the 30-second trial, we developed multivariate linear regression equations to predict AP and PP. The values computed using these equations showed a significant linear correlation with the values derived from our force-platform and high-speed motion analyses (AP: R = 0.89; PP: R = 0.90; P < 0.01). Our results indicate that lower-body muscle power in fit older adults can be accurately evaluated using the data from the initial 20 seconds of a simple 30-second chair-rise test, which requires no special equipment, preparation, or setting

We fit the CKM{\cal CKM}-matrix to all recent data with the following free parameters: three mixing angles, the CP-violating angle Ύ\delta in the Maiani parametrisation, the top quark mass mtm_t, and the product f_B{\cal B}_{\B}^{1/2}, where fBf_B is the BB-meson decay parameter and {\cal B}_{\B} is the bag parameter. Our fits span a contiguous region in the (f_B{\cal B}_{\B}^{1/2},\ \cos\delta)--plane, limited by 0.117\lsim f_B{\cal B}_{\B}^{1/2}/{\rm GeV}\lsim 0.231 and --0.95 \lsim cos⁥Ύ\cos\delta \lsim 0.70. The parameters f_B{\cal B}_{\B}^{1/2} and cos⁥Ύ\cos\delta are strongly positively correlated.Comment: 9 pages + 1 figure available upon request, HU-TFT-94-3

Influence of smoking on the prognostic value of cardiovascular computed tomography coronary angiography

Aims Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTA) is an important non-invasive imaging modality increasingly used for the diagnosis and prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). The purpose of the current study was to determine the influence of smoking status on the prognostic value of CTA in patients with suspected or known CAD. Methods and results In 1207 patients (57% male, age 57 ± 12 years) referred for CTA, the presence of significant CAD (≄50% stenosis) was determined. During follow-up (FU) the following events were recorded: all cause mortality, and non-fatal infarction. The prognostic value of CTA in smokers and non-smokers was compared using an interaction term in the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Significant CAD was observed in 327 patients (27%), and 273 patients (23%) were smokers. During a median FU time of 2.2 years, an event occurred in 50 patients. After correction for baseline characteristics including smoking in a multivariate model, significant CAD remained an independent predictor of events. Furthermore, a significant interaction (P < 0.05) was observed between significant CAD and smoking. The annualized event rate in smokers with significant CAD was 8.78% compared with 0.99% in smokers without significant CAD (P < 0.001). In non-smokers with significant CAD the annualized event rate was 2.07% compared with 1.01% in non-smokers without significant CAD (P= 0.058). Conclusion The prognostic value of CTA was significantly influenced by smoking status. The event rates in patients with significant CAD were approximately four-fold higher in smokers compared with non-smokers. These findings suggest that smoking cessation needs to be aggressively pursued, especially in smokers with significant CA

Long distance regularization in chiral perturbation theory with decuplet

We investigate the use of long distance regularization in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory with decuplet fields. The one-loop decuplet contributions to the octet baryon masses, axial couplings, S-wave nonleptonic hyperon decays and magnetic moments are evaluated in a chirally consistent fashion by employing a cutoff to implement long distance regularization. The convergence of the chiral expansions of these quantities is improved compared to the dimensionally regularized version which indicates that the propagation of Goldstone bosons over distances smaller than a typical hadronic size, which is beyond the regime of chiral perturbation theory but included by dimensional regularization, is removed by use of a cutoff.Comment: 31 page

A Study of Time-Dependent CP-Violating Asymmetries and Flavor Oscillations in Neutral B Decays at the Upsilon(4S)

We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} recorded at the ΄(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance and 3.9 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the ΄(4S)\Upsilon(4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/ψKS0J/\psi K^0_S, ψ(2S)KS0\psi(2S) K^0_S, χc1KS0\chi_{c1} K^0_S, J/ψK∗0J/\psi K^{*0} (K∗0→KS0π0K^{*0}\to K^0_S\pi^0) and J/ψKL0J/\psi K^0_L, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(∗)π/ρ/a1D^{(*)}\pi/\rho/a_1 and J/ψK∗0J/\psi K^{*0} (K∗0→K+π−K^{*0}\to K^+\pi^-). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds Δmd=0.516±0.016(stat)±0.010(syst)ps−1\Delta m_d = 0.516\pm 0.016 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.010 {\rm (syst)} {\rm ps}^{-1}. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin⁥2ÎČ\sin2\beta is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B0B^0 decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin⁥2ÎČ=0.59±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst)\sin2\beta=0.59\pm 0.14 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.05 {\rm (syst)}, demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. Measurement of the quasi-elastic axial vector mass in neutrino-oxygen interactions

    Get PDF
The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasi-elastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12,000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasi-elastic interactions nu-mu n to mu- p occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial vector mass M_A, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for M_A = 1.20 \pm 0.12 GeV. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 6 table
