Red Eléctrica de España uses integer programming for annual salary revisions

In this paper, we present a mixed-integer linear programming model for determining salary-revision matrices for an organization based on that organization?s general strategies. The solution obtained from this model consists of salary increases for each employee; these increases consider the employee?s professional performance, salary level relative to peers within the organization, and professional group. In addition to budget constraints, we modeled other elements typical of compensation systems, such as equity and justice. Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the transmission agent and operator of the Spanish electricity system, used the model to revise its 2010 and 2011 salary policies, and achieved results that were aligned with the company strategy. REE incorporated the model into the salary management module within its information system, and plans to continue to use the model in revisions of the module

The crisis of traditional media has also changed the way we become informed. However, information quality remains a factor for discussion in the absence of unified criteria for analysis. In this regard, the question arises: how do we evaluate and assess the quality of information in digital media? This study aims to seek agreement between academics and media professionals on the areas and dimensions of information quality of digital media according to objective or quantifiable values. For this, a taxonomy of the dimensions related to information quality was created, based on the review of scientific literature and further evaluated and validated by 40 experts, including scholars and media professionals alike, who focused on verifying the classification´s reliability. As a result, three macro areas of information quality, containing 21 areas, inherently comprised of a total of 75 dimensions, were validated. Lastly, this study proposes a structured model that will allow for the analysis of information quality of digital media, both in its pre-information phase catalogued in the media-business and on the media-workers’ socio-occupational characteristics, as well as its final product and informational conten

Purpose To synthesise the evidence on the prevalence of associated intraarticular lesions in subjects with acute acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocations. Methods A search in two electronic databases (PUMBMED and EMBASE) was performed from 1985 to 2019. Two independent reviewers selected studies that complied with the following inclusion criteria: (1) the study included data on surgically treated ACJ dislocation grade III–V in the Rockwood classification, (2) the ACJ injuries were acute (the surgery was performed less than 6 weeks after injury), (3) an arthroscopic evaluation of the glenohumeral joint was performed during surgery. The quality of the studies included was assessed using the tool of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results A total of 47 studies with acute ACJ injuries met the initial inclusion criteria. Of these, 21 studies (9 retrospective case series, 9 prospective case series and 3 retrospective cohort studies) presented data on associated intraarticular lesions amenable for use in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysed studies included a total of 860 subjects with acute ACJ dislocations with a male/female ratio of 6.5 and a mean age of 32 years. The meta-analysis showed a prevalence of associated intraarticular lesions in subjects with acute ACJ of 19.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 14.0–26.4%; 21 studies, 860 analysed participants; P = 0.000; I2: 74.5% random-effects model; low risk of bias). Conclusion One in five subjects with surgically treated acute ACJ dislocations will have an associated intraarticular lesion that requires further intervention. The case for a customary arthroscopic evaluation of the joint, even when an open procedure is performed to deal with the ACJ dislocation, is strong.pre-print798 K

Both p62/SQSTM1-HDAC6-dependent autophagy and the aggresome pathway mediate CDK1 degradation in human breast cancer

Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is the central mammalian regulator of cell proliferation and a promising therapeutic target for breast cancer. In fact, CDK1 inhibition downregulates survival and induces apoptosis. Due to its essential role, CDK1 expression and activity are strictly controlled at various levels. We previously described that CDK1 stability is also regulated and that SCF(βTrCP) ubiquitinates CDK1, which is degraded via the lysosomal pathway. In addition, in breast tumors from patients, we found a negative correlation between CDK1 accumulation and βTrCP levels, and a positive correlation with the degree of tumor malignancy. This prompted us to study the molecular mechanism involved in CDK1 clearance. In this report, we determine that both chemotherapeutic agents and proteolytic stress induce CDK1 degradation in human breast cancer MCF7 cells through p62/HDAC6-mediated selective autophagy. On the one hand, CDK1 binds to p62/SQSTM1-LC3 and, on the other hand, it interacts with HDAC6. Both complexes are dependent on the presence of an intact βTrCP-binding motif on CDK1. Furthermore, we also show that CDK1 is recruited to aggresomes in response to proteasome inhibition for an extended period. We propose CDK1 clearance as a potential predictive biomarker of antitumor treatment efficacy

[Abstract] The current development of renewable energies has originated a number of new structural typologies that are the physical support of the energy production systems. Photovoltaic energy is a very mature source and it is obtained using rows of panels implemented in a longitudinal grillage. Many studies have been carried out in the past with an aim to improve the capacity to obtain electrical power, but another important issue is the need to guarantee the performance of these industrial facilities under the phenomena induced by the turbulent wind flow, taking into account the fact that they are usually built in wide open spaces. This paper describes an extensive research carried out on two configurations of solar trackers by experimental and computational methods. The former was composed of a number of tests of reduced models of segments of the solar trackers, which were carried out in an aerodynamic wind tunnel. The latter consisted of a series of structural analyses worked out through a finite element model of the full panel subjected to aerodynamic and aeroelastic loads. Several angles of attack of the wind flow and a wide range of wind speeds were included in the study. This approach allowed to clearly evaluate the structural and dynamic performance of both the configurations of solar trackers under the most important wind-induced phenomena such as vortex shedding, torsional divergence, and flutter. The paper relates the phases of the study and informs about the more relevant numerical results obtained in the experiments and the computer analysis

p53 and FBXW7: Sometimes Two Guardians Are Worse than One

Too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. An example is FBXW7, a well-known tumor suppressor that may also contribute to tumorigenesis. Here, we reflect on the results of three laboratories describing the role of FBXW7 in the degradation of p53 and the possible implications of this finding in tumor cell development. We also speculate about the function of FBXW7 as a key player in the cell fate after DNA damage and how this could be exploited in the treatment of cancer disease.España, MINECO SAF2017-87358España, Junta de Andalucía grant number 2017/BIO-21

Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) over CuOx/CeO2 coated microchannel reactor

The general aspects of the synthesis and characterization results of a CuOx/CeO2 catalyst were presented. In addition the principal steps for manufacturing a microchannel reactor and for the coating of the CuOx/CeO2 catalyst onto the microchannels walls, were also summarized. The catalytic activity of this microchannel reactor during the preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) was evaluated employing a feed-stream that simulates a reformate off-gas after the WGS unit. Two activation atmospheres were studied (H2/N2 and O2/N 2). The reducing pretreatment improved the resistance to deactivation by formation of carbonaceous species over the catalyst surface at high temperatures. The presence of H2O and CO2 in the feed-stream was also analyzed indicating that the adsorption of CO2 inhibited the conversion of CO at lower temperatures because these compounds modified the active sites through the formation of carbonaceous species on the catalyst surface. Finally, the experimental results of the microreactor performance were compared with CFD simulations that were carried out using a kinetic for the CuOx/CeO2 powder catalyst. The experimental results were reasonably well described by the model, thus confirming its validity.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación ENE2009-14522-C05-01, ENE2009-14522-C05-03Junta de Andalucía P09-TEP-545

    Get PDF
In recent years, the “flipped classroom” methodology has become popular in higher education. This paper presents a study within a subject of object-oriented programming and design, where the results of the implementation of this methodology have been compared with those obtained with a more traditional teaching model. During the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic year, the subject has been taught in three different groups (with a total of 253 students) using a different methodology in each group: 1) traditional methodology, based mainly on master class; 2) flipped classroom; and 3) flipped classroom supported by peer instruction. Class attendance rates, academic performance, participation in previous activities in the flipped classroom, participation in peer learning activities in the classroom, and students' opinions on the methodologies used have been collected and analyzed. Our results indicate that the flipped classroom favors involvement in class, which results in better rates both in terms of attendance and performance
