    The Impact on Maryland\u27s Budget of Allowing Same-Sex Couples to Marry

    This analysis estimates the potential impact of extending marriage rights to same-sex couples on Maryland’s state budget. Drawing on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Maryland statistical reports, we estimate that extending marriage rights to same-sex couples would result in a net gain of approximately $3.2 million each year. This net gain is attributable to savings in expenditures on meanstested public benefit programs and an increase in sales and lodging tax revenue from weddings and wedding-related tourism

    Gun Violence Against Sexual and Gender Minorities in the United States: A Review of Research Findings and Needs

    June is the month when we annually celebrate LGBT pride and commemorate the Stonewall riots, which were an important turning point in the movement for the rights and well-being of sexual and gender minorities in the United States and elsewhere. On June 12, 2016, a gunman opened fire in the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Pulse was a gay club, and June 12 was Latin night. People of different backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and ethnicities were there as patrons, performers, and employees, and most were young and Latinx. The gunman brutally murdered 49 people and wounded 53. Mass shootings and hate crimes targeting LGBT people are especially potent forms of violence. They terrorize not only those immediately and physically impacted, but the entire community. They powerfully reinforce the sense that LGBT people must practice constant vigilance to protect themselves from stigma and violence. They shatter an already fragile sense of security and teach LGBT people that places they thought were safe may not be. Gay bars and clubs have historically been safe venues for LGBT people and their friends to gather, be themselves, have fun, meet others, and build community—a haven when families, schools, workplaces, and religious communities are unwelcoming or worse. While mass shootings like the one at Pulse, or at houses of worship, schools, and elsewhere, receive and deserve extensive media and public attention, they are an uncommon form of firearm violence in our country relative to other types of violence. As this report details, among firearm deaths each year in the general U.S. population, about 60% are suicides and about 37% are homicides, many of which happen between current or former intimate partners. Thus, when we think about gun violence and how to prevent it, our view must be broad and multi-faceted. As we discuss in this report, many questions about gun violence against sexual and gender minorities in this country are unanswered or unexplored. For example, research shows elevated prevalence of suicide attempts among LGBT people, and that guns are usually lethal when used in an attempted suicide. But, we have almost no research on suicide deaths of LGBT people (or all sexual and gender minorities) and the role of firearms in them. Without such research, it is challenging to design prevention strategies. By mapping existing research and research needs on a variety of gun violence topics, we hope that this report will inform understanding, spark better data collection and insightful studies, and ultimately help create effective interventions

    Submillimeter Array Observations of the RX J1633.9-2442 Transition Disk: Evidence for Multiple Planets in the Making

    We present continuum high resolution Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the transition disk object RX J1633.9-2442, which is located in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud and has recently been identified as a likely site of ongoing giant planet formation. The observations were taken at 340 GHz (880 micron) with the SMA in its most extended configuration, resulting in an angular resolution of 0.3" (35 AU at the distance of the target). We find that the disk is highly inclined (i ~50 deg) and has an inner cavity ~25 AU in radius, which is clearly resolved by our observations. We simultaneously model the entire optical to millimeter wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) and SMA visibilities of RX J1633.9-2442 in order to constrain the structure of its disk. We find that an empty cavity ~25 AU in radius is inconsistent with the excess emission observed at 12, 22, and 24 micron. Instead, the mid-IR excess can be modeled by either a narrow, optically thick ring at ~10 AU or an optically thin region extending from ~7 AU to ~25 AU. The inner disk (r < 5 AU) is mostly depleted of small dust grains as attested by the lack of detectable near-IR excess. We also present deep Keck aperture masking observations in the near-IR, which rule out the presence of a companion up to 500 times fainter than the primary star (in K-band) for projected separations in the 5-20 AU range. We argue that the complex structure of the RX J1633.9-2442 disk is best explained by multiple planets embedded within the disk. We also suggest that the properties and incidence of objects such as RX J1633.9-2442, T Cha, and LkCa 15 (and those of the companions recently identified to these two latter objects) are most consistent with the runaway gas accretion phase of the core accretion model, when giant planets gain their envelopes and suddenly become massive enough to open wide gaps in the disk.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Non-parametric deprojection of NIKA SZ observations: Pressure distribution in the Planck-discovered cluster PSZ1 G045.85+57.71

    The determination of the thermodynamic properties of clusters of galaxies at intermediate and high redshift can bring new insights into the formation of large-scale structures. It is essential for a robust calibration of the mass-observable scaling relations and their scatter, which are key ingredients for precise cosmology using cluster statistics. Here we illustrate an application of high resolution (<20(< 20 arcsec) thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) observations by probing the intracluster medium (ICM) of the \planck-discovered galaxy cluster \psz\ at redshift z=0.61z = 0.61, using tSZ data obtained with the NIKA camera, which is a dual-band (150 and 260~GHz) instrument operated at the IRAM 30-meter telescope. We deproject jointly NIKA and \planck\ data to extract the electronic pressure distribution from the cluster core (R∌0.02 R500R \sim 0.02\, R_{500}) to its outskirts (R∌3 R500R \sim 3\, R_{500}) non-parametrically for the first time at intermediate redshift. The constraints on the resulting pressure profile allow us to reduce the relative uncertainty on the integrated Compton parameter by a factor of two compared to the \planck\ value. Combining the tSZ data and the deprojected electronic density profile from \xmm\ allows us to undertake a hydrostatic mass analysis, for which we study the impact of a spherical model assumption on the total mass estimate. We also investigate the radial temperature and entropy distributions. These data indicate that \psz\ is a massive (M500∌5.5×1014M_{500} \sim 5.5 \times 10^{14} M⊙_{\odot}) cool-core cluster. This work is part of a pilot study aiming at optimizing the treatment of the NIKA2 tSZ large program dedicated to the follow-up of SZ-discovered clusters at intermediate and high redshifts.
