These heavy goods vehicles are often slower and less dynamic than passenger cars, and their presence can modify the flow of traffic, especially in scenarios with high intensity and in situations in which these vehicles move laterally. This can cause the service level of the road to suffer. The motivation of this work is to study the formation of queues caused by traffic interference on high-capacity roads, caused by a change in the cross section of the road and/or by heavy and slow vehicles, to apply control actions, mitigation, and prevention to avoid or minimize them. To do this, a highway section will be modelled with an incorporation branch and a reduction in the number of lanes and the effectiveness of two traffic control systems will be studied comparatively

Characterization of the glycans involved in sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus reversible adhesion

Sea urchins have hundreds of specialized adhesive organs, the tube feet, which play a key role in locomotion, substrate attachment and food capture. Tube feet are composed by two functional units: a proximal cylindrical stem that is mobile and flexible, attached to a distal flattened disc that produces adhesive secretions. Oral tube feet discs possess a specialized duo-glandular epidermis that produces adhesive and de-adhesive secretions, enabling strong but reversible adhesion to the substrate. Due to the growing interest in biomimetic adhesives, several studies have been carried out to characterize sea urchin adhesives, and up to date, it has been shown that it is composed by proteins and glycans. The protein fraction has been the subject of several studies, that pin-pointed several adhesion-related candidates. Contrastingly, little is known about the glycans that compose sea urchin adhesives. This study aims at contributing to this topic by focusing on the characterization of the glycosidic fraction of the adhesive secreted by the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816), using a battery of 22 lectins, applied to 3 complementary techniques. Our results show that five lectins label exclusively the disc adhesive epidermis and simultaneously the secreted adhesive, being, therefore, most likely relevant for sea urchin adhesion. In addition, it was possible to determine that the glycosidic fraction of the adhesive is composed by a high molecular weight glycoprotein containing N-acetylglucosamine oligomers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

IF/00006/2015/CP1276/CT0001 P 25404-B25 P 30347Echinoderms, such as the rock-boring sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, attach temporarily to surfaces during locomotion using their tube feet. They can attach firmly to any substrate and release from it within seconds through the secretion of unknown molecules. The composition of the adhesive, as well as the releasing secretion, remains largely unknown. This study re-analyzed a differential proteome dataset from Lebesgue et al. by mapping mass spectrometry-derived peptides to a P. lividus de novo transcriptome generated in this study. This resulted in a drastic increase in mapped proteins in comparison to the previous publication. The data were subsequently combined with a differential RNAseq approach to identify potential adhesion candidate genes. A gene expression analysis of 59 transcripts using whole mount in situ hybridization led to the identification of 16 transcripts potentially involved in bioadhesion. In the future these data could be useful for the production of synthetic reversible adhesives for industrial and medical purposes.publishersversionpublishe

This paper presents an intelligent system for longitudinal control of a vehicle using deep reinforcement learning based on the influence of road curvature. The intelligent system consists of an agent based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm for speed control. To train the model agent, the road curvature effect is considered through the perceived acceleration obtained from the lateral acceleration and angular velocity due to the road itself. The results of the intelligent system are continuous acceleration values. The proposed model offers promising results, suggesting that this intelligent system can assist the driver and that the vehicle control system can be applied to semi-autonomous or autonomous driving making driving safer and more comfortable

Podcasts in higher education : students’ and lecturers’ perspectives

This paper reports the use of podcasts in blended-learning at the University of Minho, in Portugal. Six lecturers created their own podcasts with different purposes in order to support their undergraduate and graduate courses and their students’ (n=318) learning. The reported study belongs to a broader project about the impact of podcasts in blended-learning and it reports data from two semesters. Results give evidence of students’ acceptance regarding podcasts although they do not yet make use of the advantages of media and mobile technologies. The lecturers considered podcasts worthwhile for teaching and for students to learn, but they are time-consuming and there is no institutional recognition. In spite of this, they intend to continue using podcasts in their courses.Universidade do Minho. We present an excerpt from a qualitative research with exploratory purposes theoretically based on the Theory of the Registers of Semiotic Representation, whose general objective was to investigate the possible contributions provided by the use of programming in the teaching-learning of affine function. The research includes the application and analysis of a teaching experience carried out in 2021 with eleven students in the first year of high school at a public school in the municipality of Teixeira de Freitas, Bahia. In this experiment, we applied a didactic sequence for teaching the concept of affine function in which students had to solve problems using the Scratch programming language. From the analysis of data referring to an activity of this sequence, we mainly concluded that conversions involving representations in natural language and in algebraic and computational registers contribute to the understanding of aspects related to the concept of affine function, such as the notion of variable, the dependency relationship between magnitudes, the use of letters or commands to represent possible numerical values and also to make generalizations.

Dimethyl Fumarate Attenuates Lung Inflammation and Oxidative Stress Induced by Chronic Exposure to Diesel Exhaust Particles in Mice

Air pollution is mainly caused by burning of fossil fuels, such as diesel, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality due to adverse health effects induced by inflammation and oxidative stress. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is a fumaric acid ester and acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. We investigated the potential therapeutic effects of DMF on pulmonary damage caused by chronic exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs). Mice were challenged with DEPs (30 µg per mice) by intranasal instillation for 60 consecutive days. After the first 30 days, the animals were treated daily with 30 mg/kg of DMF by gavage for the remainder of the experimental period. We demonstrated a reduction in total inflammatory cell number in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of mice subjected to DEP + DMF as compared to those exposed to DEPs alone. Importantly, DMF treatment was able to reduce lung injury caused by DEP exposure. Intracellular total reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxynitrite (OONO), and nitric oxide (NO) levels were significantly lower in the DEP + DMF than in the DEP group. In addition, DMF treatment reduced the protein expression of kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap-1) in lung lysates from DEP-exposed mice, whereas total nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) p65 expression was decreased below baseline in the DEP + DMF group compared to both the control and DEP groups. Lastly, DMF markedly reduced DEP-induced expression of nitrotyrosine, glutathione peroxidase-1/2 (Gpx-1/2), and catalase in mouse lungs. In summary, DMF treatment effectively reduced lung injury, inflammation, and oxidative and nitrosative stress induced by chronic DEP exposure. Consequently, it may lead to new therapies to diminish lung injury caused by air pollutants
