An asymptotic membrane-like theory for long-wave motion in a pre-stressed elastic plate
An asymptotically consistent two-dimensional theory is developed to help elucidate dynamic response in finitely deformed layers. The layers are composed of incompressible elastic material, with the theory appropriate for long-wave motion associated with the fundamental mode and derived in respect of the most general appropriate strain energy function. Leading-order and refined higher-order equations for the mid-surface deflection are derived. In the case of zero normal initial static stress and in-plane tension, the leading-order equation reduces to the classical membrane equation, with its refined counterpart also being obtained. The theory is applied to a one-dimensional edge loading problem for a semi-infinite plate. In doing so, the leading- and higher-order governing equations are used as inner and outer asymptotic expansions, the latter valid within the vicinity of the associated quasi-front. A solution is derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions
Non-principal surface waves in deformed incompressible materials
The Stroh formalism is applied to the analysis of infinitesimal surface wave propagation in a statically, finitely and homogeneously deformed isotropic half-space. The free surface is assumed to coincide with one of the principal planes of the primary strain, but a propagating surface wave is not restricted to a principal direction. A variant of Tazievâs technique [R.M. Taziev, Dispersion relation for acoustic waves in an anisotropic elastic half-space, Sov. Phys. Acoust. 35 (1989) 535â538] is used to obtain an explicit expression of the secular equation for the surface wave speed, which possesses no restrictions on the form of the strain energy function. Albeit powerful, this method does not produce a unique solution and additional checks are necessary. However, a class of materials is presented for which an exact secular equation for the surface wave speed can be formulated. This class includes the well-known MooneyâRivlin model. The main results are illustrated with several numerical examples
Frequentist Analysis of the Parameter Space of Minimal Supergravity
We make a frequentist analysis of the parameter space of minimal supergravity
(mSUGRA), in which, as well as the gaugino and scalar soft
supersymmetry-breaking parameters being universal, there is a specific relation
between the trilinear, bilinear and scalar supersymmetry-breaking parameters,
A_0 = B_0 + m_0, and the gravitino mass is fixed by m_{3/2} = m_0. We also
consider a more general model, in which the gravitino mass constraint is
relaxed (the VCMSSM). We combine in the global likelihood function the
experimental constraints from low-energy electroweak precision data, the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the lightest Higgs boson mass M_h, B
physics and the astrophysical cold dark matter density, assuming that the
lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a neutralino. In the VCMSSM, we find
a preference for values of m_{1/2} and m_0 similar to those found previously in
frequentist analyses of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) and a model with common
non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM1). On the other hand, in mSUGRA we find two
preferred regions: one with larger values of both m_{1/2} and m_0 than in the
VCMSSM, and one with large m_0 but small m_{1/2}. We compare the probabilities
of the frequentist fits in mSUGRA, the VCMSSM, the CMSSM and the NUHM1: the
probability that mSUGRA is consistent with the present data is significantly
less than in the other models. We also discuss the mSUGRA and VCMSSM
predictions for sparticle masses and other observables, identifying potential
signatures at the LHC and elsewhere.Comment: 18 pages 27 figure
Mechanism of Vanadium Leaching during Surface Weathering of Basic Oxygen Furnace Steel Slag Blocks: A Microfocus X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy Study
© 2017 American Chemical Society. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slag is enriched in potentially toxic V which may become mobilized in high pH leachate during weathering. BOF slag was weathered under aerated and air-excluded conditions for 6 months prior to SEM/EDS and ΌXANES analysis to determine V host phases and speciation in both primary and secondary phases. Leached blocks show development of an altered region in which free lime and dicalcium silicate phases were absent and Ca-Si-H was precipitated (CaCO 3 was also present under aerated conditions). ΌXANES analyses show that V was released to solution as V(V) during dicalcium silicate dissolution and some V was incorporated into neo-formed Ca-Si-H. Higher V concentrations were observed in leachate under aerated conditions than in the air-excluded leaching experiment. Aqueous V concentrations were controlled by Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 solubility, which demonstrate an inverse relationship between Ca and V concentrations. Under air-excluded conditions Ca concentrations were controlled by dicalcium silicate dissolution and Ca-Si-H precipitation, leading to relatively high Ca and correspondingly low V concentrations. Formation of CaCO 3 under aerated conditions provided a sink for aqueous Ca, allowing higher V concentrations limited by kinetic dissolution rates of dicalcium silicate. Thus, V release may be slowed by the precipitation of secondary phases in the altered region, improving the prospects for slag reuse
A test of the biogenicity criteria established for microfossils and stromatolites on quaternary tufa and speleothem materials formed in the âTwilight zoneâ at Caerwys, UK

The ability to distinguish the features of a chemical sedimentary rock that can only be attributed to biology is a challenge relevant to both geobiology and astrobiology. This study aimed to test criteria for recognizing petrographically the biogenicity of microbially influenced fabrics and fossil microbes in complex Quaternary stalactitic carbonate rocks from Caerwys, UK. We found that the presence of carbonaceous microfossils, fabrics produced by the calcification of microbial filaments, and the asymmetrical development of tufa fabrics due to the more rapid growth of microbially influenced laminations could be recognized as biogenic features. Petrographic evidence also indicates that the development of "speleothem-like" laminae was related to episodes of growth interrupted by intervals of nondeposition and erosion. The lack of any biogenic characteristics in these laminae is consistent with their development as a result of variation in the physicochemical parameters that drive calcite precipitation from meteoric waters in such environmental settings
CEO pay, shareholder returns, and accounting profits
We assess the impact on CEO pay (including salary, cash bonus, and benefits in kind) of changes in both accounting and shareholder returns in 99 British companies in the years 1972-89. After correcting for heterogeneity biases inherent in the standard specifications of the problem, we find a strong positive relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in shareholder returns, and no statistically significant relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in accounting returns. Differences between firms in long-term average profitability do appear to have a substantial effect on CEO pay, while differences between firms in shareholder returns add nothing to the within-firm pay dynamics.These findings call into question the rationale for explicitly share-based incentive schemes
