    The Kariba dam is undergoing concrete expansion as a result of an alkali-aggregate reaction. The model adopted to simulate the process is explained in the paper; it is based on the model first proposed by Ulm et al, as later modified by Saouma and Perotti. It has been implemented in the commercial finite element code Abaqus and applied to solve the benchmark problem. The parameters of the model were calibrated using the data recorded up to 1995. The calibrated model was then used for predicting the evolution of the dam up to the present date. Apart from this prediction the paper offers a number of conclusions, such as the fact that the stress level appears to have a major influence on the expansion process; and it presents some suggestions to improve the formulation of the benchmark, such as providing temperature data and widening the locations and conditions of the data employed in the calibratio

    Se describen las variaciones de temperaturas y de tensiones durante la construcción de presas de hormigón compactado. The curing of concrete is an exothermic process. The heat of hydration generated induces temperature increases in the concrete, which will disappear in the long term by heat conduction in the concrete mass and thermal exchanges with the environment. The problem is of particularly interest for large concrete masses, as is the case of dams, because the time involved in the heat diffusion process grows with the square of the dimensions and a hotter dam interior implies the possibility of cracking the exposed surfaces of the dam. The Cuira dam, currently being built in Venezuela using roller compacted concrete, is a 134 m high, arch-gravity dam. In support of the design, different strategies were analysed, including various combinations of cooling of the water and the aggregate in order to achieve acceptable results. The calculations were conducted with Abaqus, taking into account all the necessary mechanical and thermal characteristics, as well as the relevant non-linearities. The analyses led to the conclusion that no cooling was required, even taking into account the stress state imposed by an early and rapid filling of the reservoir

    PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of a novel aqueous formulation based on polymeric micelles for the topical delivery of cyclosporine A for dry eye treatment. METHODS: In vitro experiments were carried out on primary rabbit corneal cells, which were characterized by immunocytochemistry using fluorescein-labeled lectin I/isolectin B4 for the endothelial cells and mouse monoclonal antibody to cytokeratin 3+12 for the epithelial ones. Living cells were incubated for 1 hour or 24 hours with a fluorescently labeled micelle formulation and analyzed by fluorescence microscopy. In vivo evaluations were done by Schirmer test, osmolarity measurement, CyA kinetics in tears, and CyA ocular distribution after topical instillation. A 0.05% CyA micelle formulation was compared to a marketed emulsion (Restasis). RESULTS: The in vitro experiments showed the internalization of micelles in the living cells. The Schirmer test and osmolarity measurements demonstrated that micelles did not alter the ocular surface properties. The evaluation of the tear fluid gave similar CyA kinetics values: AUC = 2339 ± 1032 min*μg/mL and 2321 ± 881.63; Cmax = 478 ± 111 μg/mL and 451 ± 74; half-life = 36 ± 9 min and 28 ± 9 for the micelle formulation and Restasis, respectively. The ocular distribution investigation revealed that the novel formulation delivered 1540 ± 400 ng CyA/g tissue to the cornea. CONCLUSIONS: The micelle formulation delivered active CyA into the cornea without evident negative influence on the ocular surface properties. This formulation could be applied for immune-related ocular surface diseases

    La percepción del profesorado de Educación Primaria y Educación Secundaria sobre las variables que influyen en el Abandono Escolar Temprano

    Early School Leaving is a problem that worries countries around the world. This is because it directly affects both the lives of students who abandon and society in general. The objective of the present study is to know the perception that Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education and Upper Secondary Education teachers have on the most influential variables that affect Early School Leaving. The research carried out follows a survey methodology, by administering a questionnaire with 85 variables identified in the scientific literature. 134 responses were obtained from teachers throughout Spain. The results indicate that the variables considered more related to Early School Leaving are those related to individual and family characteristics. To a lesser extent, the school activity of the individual as a student, the attitude of the faculty, the behaviour of the classmates and the characteristics of the school are considered related. We conclude that we are facing a phenomenon of complex causes that should not be approached exclusively from an academic perspective but multidisciplinary.El Abandono Escolar Temprano es un problema que preocupa a los países de todo el mundo. Esto se debe a que afecta directamente tanto a la vida de los estudiantes que abandonan como a la sociedad en general. El objetivo del presente estudio es conocer la percepción que tienen los docentes de las etapas de Educación Primaria, Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato sobre las variables más influyentes en el Abandono Escolar Temprano. La investigación llevada a cabo sigue una metodología de encuesta, mediante la administración de un cuestionario con 85 variables identificadas en la literatura científica. Se obtuvieron 134 respuestas de docentes de toda España. Los resultados indican que las variables consideradas más relacionadas con el Abandono Escolar Temprano son las vinculadas a características individuales y familiares. En menor medida, se consideran relacionadas la actividad escolar del individuo como estudiante, la actitud del profesorado, el comportamiento de los compañeros de clase y las características del centro. Se concluye que estamos ante un fenómeno de causas complejas que no debe ser abordado exclusivamente desde una perspectiva académica sino multidisciplinar

    Analysis of Combined Bending and Punching Tests of Reinforced Concrete Slabs within IMPACT III Project

    The paper reports on a collaborative effort between the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) and their consultants Principia and Stangenberg. As part of the IMPACT III project, reduced scale impact tests of reinforced concrete structures were carried out. The simulation of test X3 is presented here and the numerical results are compared with those obtained in the test, carried out in August 2013. The general object is to improve the safety of nuclear facilities and, more specifically, to demonstrate the capabilities of current simulation techniques to reproduce the behaviour of a reinforced concrete structure impacted by a soft missile. The missile is a steel tube with a mass of 50 kg and travelling at 140 m/s. The target is a 250 mm thick, 2,1 m by 2,1 m reinforced concrete wall, held in a stiff supporting frame. The reinforcement includes both longitudinal and transverse rebars. Calculations were carried out before and after the test with Abaqus (Principia) and SOFiSTiK (Stangenberg). In the Abaqus simulation the concrete is modelled using solid elements and a damaged plasticity formulation, the rebars with embedded beam elements, and the missile with shell elements. In SOFiSTiK the target is modelled with non-linear, layered shell elements for the reinforcement on both sides; non-linear shear deformations of shell/plate elements are approximately included. The results generally indicate a good agreement between calculations and measurements

    The chemical composition of metal-poor emission-line galaxies in the Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We have re-evaluated empirical expressions for the abundance determination of N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar and Fe taking into account the latest atomic data and constructing an appropriate grid of photoionization models with state-of-the art model atmospheres. Using these expressions we have derived heavy element abundances in the \sim 310 emission-line galaxies from the Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)with an observed Hbeta flux F(Hbeta)> 1E-14 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} and for which the [O III] 4363 emission line was detected at least at a 2sigma level, allowing abundance determination by direct methods. The oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H of the SDSS galaxies lies in the range from ~ 7.1 (Zsun/30) to 8.5 (0.7 Zsun). The SDSS sample is merged with a sample of 109 blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies with high quality spectra, which contains extremely low-metallicity objects. We use the merged sample to study the abundance patterns of low-metallicity emission-line galaxies. We find that extremely metal-poor galaxies (12 + log O/H < 7.6, i.e. Z < Zsun/12) are rare in the SDSS sample. The alpha element-to-oxygen abundance ratios do not show any significant trends with oxygen abundance, in agreement with previous studies, except for a slight increase of Ne/O with increasing metallicity, which we interpret as due to a moderate depletion of O onto grains in the most metal-rich galaxies. The Fe/O abundance ratio is smaller than the solar value, by up to 1 dex at the high metallicity end. (abridged)Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures.     Recoiling Black Holes in Merging Galaxies: Relationship to AGN Lifetimes, Starbursts, and the M-sigma Relation

    Gravitational-wave (GW) recoil of merging supermassive black holes (SMBHs) may influence the co-evolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies. We examine this possibility using SPH/N-body simulations of gaseous galaxy mergers in which the merged BH receives a recoil kick. This enables us to follow recoiling BHs in self-consistent, evolving merger remnants. In contrast to recent studies on similar topics, we conduct a large parameter study, generating a suite of over 200 simulations with more than 60 merger models and a range of recoil velocities (vk). Our main results are as follows. (1) BHs kicked at nearly the central escape speed (vesc) may oscillate on large orbits for up to a Hubble time, but in gas-rich mergers, BHs kicked with up to ~ 0.7 vesc may be confined to the central few kpc of the galaxy, owing to gas drag and steep central potentials. (2) vesc in gas-rich mergers may increase rapidly during final coalescence, in which case trajectories may depend on the timing of the BH merger relative to the formation of the potential well. (3) Recoil events generally reduce the lifetimes of bright active galactic nuclei (AGN), but may actually extend AGN lifetimes at lower luminosities. (4) Kinematically-offset AGN (v > 800 km s^-1) may be observable for up to ~ 10 Myr either immediately after the recoil or during pericentric passages through a gas-rich remnant. (5) Spatially-offset AGN (R > 1 kpc) generally have low luminosities and lifetimes of ~ 1 - 100 Myr. (6) Rapidly-recoiling BHs may be up to ~ 5 times less massive than their stationary counterparts. This lowers the normalization of the M-sigma relation and contributes to both intrinsic and overall scatter. (7) Finally, the displacement of AGN feedback after a recoil event enhances central star formation rates, thereby extending the starburst phase of the merger and creating a denser stellar cusp.     Supermassive black holes, pseudobulges, and the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies

    We present HST/ACS observations of ten galaxies that host narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) nuclei, believed to contain relatively smaller mass black holes accreting at high Eddington ratios. We deconvolve each ACS image into a nuclear point source (AGN), a bulge, and a disk, and fitted the bulge with a Sersic profile and the disk with an exponential profile. We find that at least five galaxies can be classified as having pseudobulges. All ten galaxies lie below the \mbh--Lbulge_{bulge} relation, confirming earlier results. Their locus is similar to that occupied by pseudobulges. This leads us to conclude that the growth of BHs in NLS1s is governed by secular processes rather than merger-driven. Active galaxies in pseudobulges point to an alternative track of black hole--galaxy co-evolution. Because of the intrinsic scatter in black hole mass--bulge properties scaling relations caused by a combination of factors such as the galaxy morphology, orientation, and redshift evolution, application of scaling relations to determine BH masses may not be as straightforward as has been hoped.Comment: Replaced with accepted versio
