Automating decision making to help establish norm-based regulations
Norms have been extensively proposed as coordination mechanisms for both
agent and human societies. Nevertheless, choosing the norms to regulate a
society is by no means straightforward. The reasons are twofold. First, the
norms to choose from may not be independent (i.e, they can be related to each
other). Second, different preference criteria may be applied when choosing the
norms to enact. This paper advances the state of the art by modeling a series
of decision-making problems that regulation authorities confront when choosing
the policies to establish. In order to do so, we first identify three different
norm relationships -namely, generalisation, exclusivity, and substitutability-
and we then consider norm representation power, cost, and associated moral
values as alternative preference criteria. Thereafter, we show that the
decision-making problems faced by policy makers can be encoded as linear
programs, and hence solved with the aid of state-of-the-art solvers

Tubifex tubifex chronic toxicity test using artificial sediment : methodological issues
The formulation and preparation of artificial sediments to be used in chronic toxicity tests is an important issue in the standardisation process. In the present study, artificial sediment has been used with Tubifex tubifex (Tubificidae, Oligochaeta) in both culture and in 28-day toxicity tests with spiked toxicants, in order to avoid the presence of occasionally important concentrations of some pollutants in sediments from apparently clean sites. The addition of supplementary food to the sediment at the beginning of the test is necessary to get satisfactory reproductive levels at the end of the 28-day chronic test, but this supplement of organic matter also provoked an additional increase of the levels of ammonia. The presence of ammonia at toxic levels in the artificial sediment during the first days after its preparation influences the quality of the water column and interstitial water, affecting the biological results of the test. The behaviour of the worms that escaped from sediment resulted in a reduction of their feeding activity, reproduction, and also mortality during the chronic test. Two different quantities of rations (80 and 160 mg Tetramin® flakes) were compared, combined or not with a weekly renewal of the overlying water. The lowest peak of ammonia in water column and sediment pore-water was measured with 80 mg of Tetramin®. The weekly water renewal did not give better results in survival or reproduction at the end of the 28-day tests. A combination of sediment aeration during two weeks followed by a renewal of water column reduced the levels of ammonia in the water column and interstitial water below 1 mg/l N-NH3. Therefore, this procedure is proposed for the reduction of ammonia, prior a toxicity test is conducted with artificial sediment, in order to avoid the presence of this compound at lethal or sublethal levels that could act as a confounding factor in chronic toxicity tests. The lowest supplement of food (80 mg) in a static exposure regime was chosen as satisfactory for the chronic test. Survival percentage and reproduction (number of cocoons and number of young worms) were comparable with the data reported in tests with natural sediments using Tubifex tubifex, although both adult worm and cocoon biomass values were significantly lower and can not be used as end-points in toxicity tests with artificial sediment as it has been formulated here.
Cybervictimization among secondary students: social networking time, personality traits and parental education
Background: Cyberbullying among children and adolescents is a major public health concern. However, research
has not yet definitively identified the risk factors associated with cybervictimization. The purpose of this study was
to determine the association of cybervictimization with use of social networks, personality traits and parental
education in secondary students.
Methods: The study population consisted of 765 secondary students (56.5% girls) from Majorca (Spain) who were
aged 15.99 years (grade 4). The data were from the 16 secondary school centers that participated in the ITACA
Project, a multi-center, cluster randomized controlled trial. Cybervictimization was measured by the Garaigordobil
Cybervictimization Scale, and the Big Five Questionnaire for Children was used to assess personality traits.
Results: Results showed that 39.9% of the students were cybervictims. Univariate analysis indicated that more girls
than boys were cybervictimized (43.1% vs 35.7%). Cybervictims spent more time in social networking sites than
non-victims (6 h 30 min vs. 5 h 16 min) and had greater emotional instability (0.16 vs. -0.23) and extraversion (0.11
vs. -0.09) and were less conscientious (− 0.001 vs. 0.20). Multivariable analysis indicated that social networking time
was not significantly associated with cybervictimization after controlling for personality traits, but the same
personality traits remained significantly associated.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that cyberbullying is a frequent and relevant problem in adolescents. Big Five
personality traits are related with cybervictimization. Possible ways to design interventions include promoting social
leisure activities, encourage responsible attitudes and provide stress coping toolsInstituto de Salud Carlos III | Ref. PI12/0181
A model to support collective reasoning: Formalization, analysis and computational assessment
Inspired by e-participation systems, in this paper we propose a new model to
represent human debates and methods to obtain collective conclusions from them.
This model overcomes drawbacks of existing approaches by allowing users to
introduce new pieces of information into the discussion, to relate them to
existing pieces, and also to express their opinion on the pieces proposed by
other users. In addition, our model does not assume that users' opinions are
rational in order to extract information from it, an assumption that
significantly limits current approaches. Instead, we define a weaker notion of
rationality that characterises coherent opinions, and we consider different
scenarios based on the coherence of individual opinions and the level of
consensus that users have on the debate structure. Considering these two
factors, we analyse the outcomes of different opinion aggregation functions
that compute a collective decision based on the individual opinions and the
debate structure. In particular, we demonstrate that aggregated opinions can be
coherent even if there is a lack of consensus and individual opinions are not
coherent. We conclude our analysis with a computational evaluation
demonstrating that collective opinions can be computed efficiently for
real-sized debates
Instilling moral value alignment by means of multi-objective reinforcement learning
AI research is being challenged with ensuring that autonomous agents learn to behave ethically, namely in alignment with moral values. Here, we propose a novel way of tackling the value alignment problem as a two-step process. The first step consists on formalising moral values and value aligned behaviour based on philosophical foundations. Our formalisation is compatible with the framework of (Multi-Objective) Reinforcement Learning, to ease the handling of an agent's individual and ethical objectives. The second step consists in designing an environment wherein an agent learns to behave ethically while pursuing its individual objective. We leverage on our theoretical results to introduce an algorithm that automates our two-step approach. In the cases where value-aligned behaviour is possible, our algorithm produces a learning environment for the agent wherein it will learn a value-aligned behaviour
Different approaches to assessing pollution load: the case of nitrogen-related grey water footprint of barley and soybean in Argentina
Agriculture is among the main causes of water pollution. Currently, 75% of global anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loads come from leaching/runoff from cropland. The grey water footprint (GWF) is an indicator of water resource pollution, which allows for the evaluation and monitoring of pollutant loads (L) that can affect water. However, in the literature, there are different approaches to estimating L and thus contrasting GWF estimates: (A1) leaching/runoff fraction approach, (A2) surplus approach and (A3) soil nitrogen balance approach. This study compares these approaches for the first time to assess which one is best adapted to real crop production conditions and optimises GWF calculation. The three approaches are applied to assess N-related GWF in barley and soybean. For barley in 2019, A3 estimated a GWF value 285 to 196% higher than A1, while in 2020, the A3 estimate was 135 to 81% higher. Soybean did not produce a GWF due to the crop characteristics. A3 incorporated N partitioning within the agroecosystem and considered different N inputs beyond fertilization, improving the accuracy of L and GWF estimation. Providing robust GWF results to decision-makers may help to prevent or reduce the impacts of activities that threaten the world’s water ecosystems and supply.Funding: the participation of P.
