Objective: to analyze different protocols on the influence of manual therapy on temporomandibular joint dysfunctions. Methodology: A computerized research was performed in the databases PEDro, PubMed and EBSCO, to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the influence of manual therapy on temporomandibular joint dysfunctions. Results: 9 studies were included in a total of 458 individuals. The nonspecific mandibular mobilization, the information and instruction of the patients, the inhibition techniques when associated to the exercise, as well as the relaxation and stretching exercises demonstrated positive results in the physiotherapeutic intervention, except myofascial induction techniques. Conclusions: The results show efficacy in almost all applied techniques, although some when associated with others. The heterogeneity of the studies, the treatment protocols and their application does not allow to conclude the optimal treatment time as well as the long-term effects.N/

Strategies that top managers implement to make them indispensables to the organizations, are known as entrenchment. This concept is little studied in corporate governance. These strategies seem to be a reaction of top managers to the different mechanisms of control, internal or external, and a necessary and compulsory path for those who wish to amplify their discretionary capacity. The entrenchment of top managers isn't a formal statute or official recognizance; it happens in a net of informal relationships that manager's control. It allows top managers to increase their own power near the stakeholders. Therefore, such power tends to be perceived as having an illegal power source. However, entrenchment of top managers isn't necessarily inefficient, it can be of benefit as long as it contributes value creation and to the development of the organization as a whole. Thus, it was tried to trace the path taken by this line of research in the recent past and to contribute to the promotion of empirical studies to strengthen this theme with results emanating from the organizations' practices.

Using metaheuristics-based methods to provide sustainable market solutions, suitable to consumer needs

    Get PDF
Nowadays the buildings sector is one of the key sectors to achieve sustainability, with the correspondent consumers, in particular, the household consumers, having the need to perform sustainable choices every day, regarding the appliances to be acquired from the market. This is not only due to government’s growing concerns about sustainability but also with the consumers on having sustainable solutions, given the different economic, social (including their comfort) and environmental needs. However, the existence of several electrical appliances on market, with all their different issues, brands and models, together with the several tradeoffs referred before, difficult the consumer’s choices, on having sustainable solutions in the market. Therefore, this work, presents an approach, by using Multi-Attribute Value Theory (MAVT), integrated with metaheuristics, which uses Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) to provide suitable and sustainable market solutions to a consumer, according to its own needs. Based on the achieved solutions and considering the relative importance, given to each consumer, and regarding each dimension of sustainability, it’s possible to achieve several savings, namely electrical and water consumption, CO2 emissions, among others. A case study shall be shown, to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.publishersversionpublishe

The Future Looks Good: Examining the Associations Between Coping, Psychological Distress, and Optimism

    Get PDF
The recent pandemic and consequent lockdown had a substantial impact on mental health and optimism regarding the future. Previous research showed that levels of depression, anxiety, and stress had increased throughout the pandemic. Nonetheless, how individuals cope when faced with adversity may be associated with positive expectations regarding the future. A sample of 274 Portuguese workers (female = 54) with a mean age of 40.86 (SD = 0.70) and work experience of 19.68 years (SD = 12.07) met inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the proposed study. They represented a variety of working classes (i.e., arts, engineering, marketers, transportation and logistic, clerks, personal trainers, managers, lawyers, accountants, directors, journalism, health care). We investigated the associations between depression, stress, anxiety, adaptive and maladaptive coping, and optimism while controlling for working experience, gender, and work type. We found that depression was related to lower levels of optimism. However, for participants scoring high on adaptive coping and anxiety, higher scores of optimism were reported. Gender, work type, and experience did not significantly influence the results. These results provide evidence through which positive mental health can be promoted after the pandemic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Benefits of energy related building renovation in residents comfort and well-being – Vila d’Este case study

    Get PDF
The relevance of the building sector in the global energy use as well as in the global carbon emissions makes the improvement of the overall energy performance of existing buildings an important part of the actions to mitigate climate changes. Regardless of this potential, large-scale building renovation has been found hard to trigger, with present standards mainly focused on new buildings, not responding effectively to the technical, functional and economic constraints of the existing ones. One of the common problems in the assessment of building renovation scenarios is that only energy savings and costs are normally considered, despite the fact that the investment on energy efficiency yield several benefits beyond the value of saved energy (the so-called co-benefits). To demonstrate and highlight the relevance of co-benefits achieved in the renovation process, a Portuguese neighbourhood with nearly 17.000 inhabitants that has been recently renovated is analysed in search for evidences of the existence of these co-benefits and their relevance. Indoor temperature, humidity and noise insulation were monitored and a survey to the residents was carried out. Results clear indicate the achievement of co-benefits at the building level such as increased user comfort and reduced problems with building physics (mould and water infiltrations), but also the elimination of the feeling of gentrification by outside people to the neighbourhood. The analysis demonstrates that the decision-making process canâ t only be based on investment costs and energy savings, being necessary that owners, investors, promoters, but also policy makers adapt their reasoning to include these additional benefits

Paving the way for predictive diagnostics and personalized treatment of invasive aspergillosis

    Get PDF
Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening fungal disease commonly diagnosed among individuals with immunological deficits, namely hematological patients undergoing chemotherapy or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Vaccines are not available, and despite the improved diagnosis and antifungal therapy, the treatment of IA is associated with a poor outcome. Importantly, the risk of infection and its clinical outcome vary significantly even among patients with similar predisposing clinical factors and microbiological exposure. Recent insights into antifungal immunity have further highlighted the complexity of host-fungus interactions and the multiple pathogen-sensing systems activated to control infection. How to decode this information into clinical practice remains however, a challenging issue in medical mycology. Here, we address recent advances in our understanding of the host-fungus interaction and discuss the application of this knowledge in potential strategies with the aim of moving toward personalized diagnostics and treatment (theranostics) in immunocompromised patients. Ultimately, the integration of individual traits into a clinically applicable process to predict the risk and progression of disease, and the efficacy of antifungal prophylaxis and therapy, holds the promise of a pioneering innovation benefiting patients at risk of IA.CC is supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal (SFRH/BPD/96176/2013
