Panels were produced with strips of bamboo (Guadua magna) in layers crossed at angles of 90° and bonded with phenol-formaldehyde or PVA based resin, glued in three and five plies. The panels were tested and the physical and mechanical properties determined. The tests were primarily related to the commercial adhesives used as well as the number of layers of bamboo used. The density ranged from 0.690 to 0.768 g.cm-3. Panels bonded with PVA resin showed low mechanical strength, with MOR between 6.7 and 7.8 MPa. Those bonded with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive showed high strength, with modulus of rupture (MOR) ranging from 55.5 to 87.0 MPa, which is excellent for boards similar to wood-based panels. Panels with phenolic resin also had reduced thickness swelling, up to 8.4%. The panels made with three layers showed higher resistance to bending than those made with five layers. © 2015, Federal University of Lavras. All rights reserved

ABSTRACT: Data from 1215 kids, with 402 Saanen, 396 Alpine, 200 T oggenburg and 217 ½ Alpine goats, was collected on growth of goats in the F ederal D istrict, B razil from 1995 to 2001. For variance analyses were considered as fixed effect farm, breed, sex, kidding type, month and year of kidding and weight of dam as a covariable. T raits as birth weight and growth from birth to weaning and weaning to first insemination were studied. There was a significant effect of breed, sex and type of kidding on birth weight while weaning weight was only influenced by breed. Month and year of kidding were significant in influencing growth rate after birth. Number of days to insemination weight was influenced by both breed and month of kidding while the insemination weight itself was not influenced by any of the factors studied. I nsemination weight was lowly correlated with the other traits in the study, as was to be expected. D ays to insemination weight was most highly and negatively correlated with growth rate after weaning and weaning weight showing that faster growing animals that were larger at weaning reached insemination weight more quickly. T he correlation between weaning weight and growth rate after weaning was low indicating that animals heavier at weaning did not necessarily grow faster after weaning.

Although several studies have pointed to a possible role of interleukin 2 (IL-2) in schizophrenia (SZ), association between IL-2 and the different groups of symptoms has not been explored. the objective of this study was to investigate a possible correlation of peripheral IL-2 levels with symptoms and cognitive performance in patients with SZ. in addition, we compared the plasma levels of IL-2 between patients with SZ and healthy controls. Twenty-nine chronically medicated outpatients with SZ according to DSM-IV were compared with twenty-six healthy controls. the patients were evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) and the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). All the participants had blood collected into EDTA tubes by venipuncture between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. Plasma concentrations of IL-2 were determined by cytometric bead array. A computerized neuropsychological battery assessed verbal learning, verbal fluency, working memory, set shifting, executive function, inhibition and intelligence. Patients with SZ had lower levels of IL-2 than healthy controls (p < 0.001). in the SZ group, IL-2 levels were positively correlated with scores in the digit span test (rho = 0.416, P = 0.025) and intelligence (rho = 0.464, P = 0.011). We also found a negative correlation between IL-2 and total score in the negative subscale of PANSS (rho = -0.447, p = 0.015). Our findings suggest that IL-2 may be involved in the mechanisms related to cognitive deterioration and negative symptomatology in schizophrenia. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Until now, few functional performance markers are able to predict death in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). This study aimed to identify the association between non-adoption of antigravity posture and death in patients admitted to an adult ICU. It is a retrospective and analytical study, performed through the analysis of medical records. Association between non-adoption of antigravity posture and death was tested by multiple logistic regression adjusted for gender, age, disease severity (measured by Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Classification System II [Apache II]), time of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), and period of sedation. The odds ratio (OR) with confidence interval (CI=95%) was estimated. A total of 92 sequential patients were included in the study. A strong association between the non-adoption of antigravity posture in the ICU and death (ORadjusted=37.7, CI=4.76-293, p=0.001) was observed. Thus, one can conclude that patients who did not adopt an antigravity posture during ICU admission had a much higher odds of mortality. This simple strategy to classify functional capacity of critical patients can be routinely used by the team as a simple and dichotomous variable for ICU mortality prognosis.

The settlement of villages in the old colonial province of Minas Gerais obeyed certain principles of what was considered decent, convenient and adequate. Such principles were based on rules, doctrines and habits inherent to the Luso-Brazilian architecture of that time. The historical analysis of these aspects leads to a critical review of some consolidated assumptions in historiography, such as the one for which the settlements aforementioned would have appeared in a spontaneous, irregular and disordered fashion. Because they are evident in the remaining settlements and period art treatises and documents, these aspects lead to the consideration of a true art of populating, based on certain values and habits, which we call convenient Luso-Brazilian urbanism.

A vida reprodutiva média foi 5,34 anos; a raça BH apresentou o maior valor (6,70 anos) e a PSI o menor valor (4,24 anos). _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study aimed to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for foaling interval (FI), age at first foaling (AFF), generation interval (GI), reproductive life (RL) and foaling date distribution in equines of four genetic groups: Brazilian Showjumper (BS), Thoroughbred (Th), Hanoverian (HAN) and No Defined Breed (NDB). Data collected from 1977 to 2002 was provided by a Brazilian Army herd. Models used for analyses included the fixed effects of month and year of foaling and measuring, age of dam, foal sex and genetic group. With the exceptions of number of foaling and birth year of dam for foaling date and genetic group for AFF, fixed effects were significant sources of variation for the reproductive traits. The average for FI was 563.9 days and it was significantly influenced by breed effect. There was a trend towards a reduction on FI as younger dams entered the population. The average for AFF was 7.17 years and it was significantly influenced by birth year of the dam. Average reproductive life was 5.34 years. The highest value (6.70 years) was observed for BS and the lowest one (4.24 years) for Th. The average number of foals was 22.98 per stallion and 3.7 per mare. The GI was 13.05 years for males and 9.99 years for females. Heritability estimates for reproductive traits were low. Replacement of dams at younger age and less use of Th may improve the reproductive efficiency of this herd

Data was available on 498 horses registered by the Brazilian Association of Campeiro Horse Breeders. This included individual data on 16 linear traits [shoulder height (SH), mid back height (MBH), withers height (WH), back height (BH), head length (HL), neck length (NL), back length (BL), shoulder length (SL), hip length (HiL), body length (BOL), head width (HW), chest width (CW), hip width (HIW), chest circumference (CC), cannon bone circumference (CBC)], space under horse (SUH), coat color, temperament and nine subjective traits taken at registration. Body indices and weight were calculated from standard formulae where pectoral index (PI)= WH/SUH, dactyl-thoracic index (DTI), weight (BW), length index (LI), body index (BI), thorax index (TI), conformation index (CI), work index 1 (WI1) and work index 2 (WI2), compact index 1 (COI1) and compact index 2 (COI2). The effect of sex of animal, month, age and year of registration as well as coat color on the measurements was carried out using SAS® (Statistical Analysis System). The Campeiro horse is well proportioned with WH (1.46 m) slightly higher than SH. It is an animal that is between saddle and light traction, with a mean weight 419.96 kg, and medium length. WI1 and WI2 show that it can support 117.16 kg at a trot or gallop and a maximum weight of 198.76 kg at a fast walk. Variance coefficients varied widely but low measures predominated. Sex and coat color were not important sources of variation for measurements and indices. Month of registration influenced CC, CP, CD, CE, LP, LA, PT, PC and most indices. Year of registration did not influence AC, AD, ACost, CC, LP and PT, but was significant for the other linear measures and only for IT in the indices. Age influenced ACost, CD, LC, LP, LA, PT and most indices. The most popular coat color was chestnut followed by bay and dark grey

The genetic diversity of the local breeds can contribute to the maintenance of traits that are economically important to the genetic improvement of sheep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of genotype and sex on the fatty acid profile, shear force, and sensory traits of the longissimus lumborum muscle of lambs. Ninety-six lambs with a weaning weight of 15.21 ± 1.25 kg were finished in feedlot until they reached the slaughter weight of 32 kg. Lambs Pantaneiro male (uncastrated) and female, Texel×Pantaneiro, and Santa Inês×Pantaneiro were used in a completely randomized 2×3 factorial design. Pantaneiro lambs had a higher proportion of C14:0 than Texel×Pantaneiro and Santa Inês×Pantaneiro, while Texel×Pantaneiro had a higher proportion of C18:3ω6. Males had a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and ω3. Generally, the meat from all lambs showed high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). There was interaction between genotype and sex for C14:1 and C16:1. Santa Inês×Pantaneiro males had a higher proportion of C14:1than Pantaneiro females and Texel×Pantaneiro males and females. Pantaneiro males had a higher C16:1 than Texel×Pantaneiro males and females. The sex had an effect only for tenderness, with tender meat for females. Based on the fatty acid profile, the genotypes were discriminated with high accuracy, with 88.9%, 90.1% and 100% classified correctly for Pantaneiro, Santa Inês×Pantaneiro, and Texel×Pantaneiro, respectively. The use of Pantaneiro sheep for meat production provides the same fatty acids and sensory traits, and the crossbreeding shows a tendency to reduce the proportion of C14:0, C14:1, and C16:1, and to increase the proportion of C18:3ω6, highlighting the Texel×Pantaneiro lambs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The experiment was conducted to determine the nutritional requirement of calcium and the best calcium:available phosphorus ratio for commercial layers at the post-laying peak. A total of 324 Hy-Line W-36 laying hens were utilized in the period from 42 to 58 weeks of age, distributed in a completely randomized design in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement, composed of three levels of calcium (39, 42 and 45 g/kg) and three calcium:phosphorus ratios (12.12:1; 10.53:1; and 9.30:1), totaling nine treatments with six replications and six birds per experimental unit. There was no significant effect from the calcium levels × calcium:phosphorus ratio interaction for any of the variables studied. The calcium levels and the calcium:phosphorus ratios did not affect the variables performance or egg and bone quality. At the evaluation of the calcium:phosphorus balance, as the levels of calcium of the diet were raised, the intake of calcium and phosphorus and the contents of mineral matter and calcium in the excreta increased linearly, and the retention of calcium by birds decreased linearly. With the reduction of the calcium:phosphorus ratios of the diet, intake, retention and excretion of phosphorus by layers increased. Diets containing calcium at 39 g/kg and a calcium:phosphorus ratio of 12.12:1, corresponding to an increase in calcium of 3.51 g/bird/day and available phosphorus of 289 mg/bird/day, meet the requirements of calcium and available phosphorus of white egg layers in the period from 42 to 58 weeks of age
