    Retrospective study of the clinical evolution of three clinical cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia in dogs.

    Se expone un estudio comparativo de la evolución clínica de tres pacientes caninos (un Basset Hound de nueve años y dos Bóxer de seis y ocho años, respectivamente), los cuales presentaban antecedentes de hematuria y/o secreción uretral sanguinolenta en ausencia de micción. Una vez realizado el examen físico y los exámenes paraclínicos, el diagnóstico fue de Hiperplasia Prostática Benigna (HPB). Esta enfermedad es un cambio normal del envejecimiento y es la patología más común de la próstata canina. Las potenciales etiologías de esta enfermedad comprenden una proporción anormal de andrógenos y estrógenos, un incremento en el número de receptores androgénicos y sensibilidad tisular a los andrógenos; siendo la dihidrotestosterona el principal promotor de la HPB. El tratamiento principal de esta enfermedad es la orquiectomía y/o la medicación con hormonas anti-androgénicas.ABSTRACT. A comparative study of the clinical evolution of three canine patients (one nine years old Basset Hound and two Boxer –six and eight years old), who were taken to medical attention due to hematuria and urethral bloody secretion in absence of urination, is exposed. Once the physical examination and the paraclinical test were carried out, a Complex Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (CBPH) was diagnosed. This pathology is a normal change of aging and the commonest pathology of the canine prostate. The potential etiologies of this disease comprise an abnormal proportion of androgens and estrogens, increase in the number of androgenics receptors and increase of tissue sensitivity to androgens; which are mainly promoted by dihidrotestosterone. The main treatment of CBPH is the orchiectomy and/or the treatment with antiandrogenics hormones

    Geochemical Anomalies in Soils and Surface Waters in an Area Adjacent to a Long-Used Controlled Municipal Landfill

    Municipal landfills, even when controlled, are potential sources of soil and water pollution in surrounding areas, due to the migration of pollutants through water and air. This research assesses geochemical anomalies of heavy elements and rare earth elements in soils and surface waters in an adjacent area to a controlled municipal landfill near Madrid (Central Spain), under long-term operation. Twenty soil and eighteen water samples were collected in 2017 and 2018 and analyzed for this purpose. Spatial distribution and concentrations of heavy elements (Ag, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Tl, and Zn) and rare Earth elements (La, Ce, and Gd) are heterogeneous and significantly higher than soil background levels, but below the legal limits to consider intervention. Accumulation of heavy and rare Earth elements in soil nearest the landfill is attributed to occur via wind and wind-driven rain transport, while their accumulation in sediments is attributed to water transport through the creeks. Surface waters show large contamination by organic and inorganic compounds and influence geochemical anomalies in sediments. The water quality is below allowable concentrations for drinking water.     Systemic Th17 response in the presence of periodontal inflammation

    The relationship between periodontitis and the pathogenesis of other inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and obesity has been an important topic of study in recent decades. The Th17 pathway plays a significant role in how local inflammation can influence systemic inflammation in the absence of systemic pathology. Objective: To determine Th17 biased-cells in systemically healthy patients in the presence of generalized chronic periodontitis. Methodology: A total of 28 patients were recruited without systemic inflammatory pathology, which was determined by clinical history, the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and rheumatoid factor detection. Of these patients, 13 were diagnosed as healthy/gingivitis (H/G) and 15 as generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP). Th17 (CD4+CD161+) cells and Th17IL23R+ (CD4+CD161+IL-23R+) cells were quantified by flow cytometry, based on the total cells and on the lymphocyte region, termed the “enriched population” (50,000 events for each). Results: The percentages of Th17 cells of the H/G and periodontitis groups were similar on total cells and enriched population (19 vs 21.8; p=4.134 and 19.6 vs 21.8; p=0.55). However, Th17IL23R+ cells differ significantly between periodontally healthy patients and generalized chronic periodontitis patients in both total cell (0.22% vs 0.65%; p=0.0004) and enriched populations (0.2% vs 0.75%; p=0.0266). Conclusions: GCP patients (otherwise systemically healthy) were characterized by increased Th17-proinflammatory cell phenotype positive for the IL-23 receptor in peripheral blood. The proportion of Th17 cells that are negative for the IL-23 receptor in the peripheral blood of systemically healthy patients seemed to be unaffected by the presence or absence of chronic periodontitis

    Exploring orbital-charge conversion mediated by interfaces with copper through spin-orbital pumping

    We investigated how different materials affect the orbital-charge conversion in heterostructures with the naturally oxidized cooper capping layer. When we added a thin layer of CuOx(3nm)CuOx(3nm) onto yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/W(YIG)/W stacks, we observed a significant reduction in the charge current signal measured by means the spin pumping effect technique. This finding contrasts with the results of a prior study conducted on YIG/Pt/CuOx, which reported the opposite effect. On the other hand, when we added the same CuOx(3nm)CuOx(3nm) layer to YIG/Ti(4nm)YIG/Ti(4nm) structures, there was not much change in the spin pumping signal. This occurred because Ti does not generate much orbital current at the Ti/CuOxTi/CuOx interface, unlike Pt, due to its weaker spin-orbit coupling. Interestingly, when we added the CuOx(3nm)CuOx(3nm) layer to SiO2/Py(5nm)/Pt(4nm)SiO_{2}/Py(5nm)/Pt(4nm) structures, the spin pumping signal increased. However, in SiO2/CuOx(3nm)/Pt(4nm)/Py(5nm)SiO_{2}/CuOx(3nm)/Pt(4nm)/Py(5nm) structures, the signal decreased. Finally, we delve into a theoretical analysis of the spin (orbital) Hall effect in YIG/Heavy-metal systems. These findings have the potential to advance research in the innovative field of orbitronics and contribute to the development of new technologies based on spin-orbital conversion.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

    Opacity calculation for target physics using the ABAKO/RAPCAL code

    Radiative properties of hot dense plasmas remain a subject of current interest since they play an important role in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research, as well as in studies on stellar physics. In particular, the understanding of ICF plasmas requires emissivities and opacities for both hydro-simulations and diagnostics. Nevertheless, the accurate calculation of these properties is still an open question and continuous efforts are being made to develop new models and numerical codes that can facilitate the evaluation of such properties. In this work the set of atomic models ABAKO/RAPCAL is presented, as well as a series of results for carbon and aluminum to show its capability for modeling the population kinetics of plasmas in both LTE and NLTE regimes. Also, the spectroscopic diagnostics of a laser-produced aluminum plasma using ABAKO/RAPCAL is discussed. Additionally, as an interesting application of these codes, fitting analytical formulas for Rosseland and Planck mean opacities for carbon plasmas are reported. These formulas are useful as input data in hydrodynamic simulation of targets where the computation task is so hard that in line computation with sophisticated opacity codes is prohibitive

    Discovery and application of Frequency Ratio Method to the new multiperiodic gamma Dor star HD 218427

    gamma Dor-type oscillations have been discovered in the star HD218427 through simultaneous uvby photometric observations carried out in the year 2003. A few Hbeta-Crawford measurements were also collected for calibration purposes which place this star well-located inside the gamma Dor instability region. Deficiency in metal content, similar to other well-defined gamma Dor stars, is found in HD218427 and the possibility of a lambda Boo nature is discussed. Frequency analysis was carried out for different filters, the combined "vby" filter was also used and five frequencies were found as significant with periods ranging between 0.3 and 0.8 days. The recently developed Frequency Ratio Method is used in order to perform an identification of the excited modes. The results are consistent with an l=2 identification for all the modes and high radial quantum numbers (n~40) for the three main observed periodicities. The possibility of multiplet structures is also discussed. However, no consistency is found when the Time-Dependent Convection treatment is used for modes discrimination. The disagreement can be due to the large rotation velocity taking place in HD218427 and, consequently, the significant coupling between the modes.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by A&

    Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter phase transition from finite temperature symmetry breaking of Klein-Gordon fields

    In this paper the thermal evolution of scalar field dark matter particles at finite cosmological temperatures is studied. Starting with a real scalar field in a thermal bath and using the one loop quantum corrections potential, we rewrite Klein-Gordon's (KG) equation in its hydrodynamical representation and study the phase transition of this scalar field due to a Z_2 symmetry breaking of its potential. A very general version of a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation is obtained. When introducing Madelung's representation, the continuity and momentum equations for a non-ideal SFDM fluid are formulated, and the cosmological scenario with the SFDM described in analogy to an imperfect fluid is then considered where dissipative contributions are obtained in a natural way.Additional terms appear compared to those obtained in the classical version commonly used to describe the \LambdaCDM model, i.e., the ideal fluid. The equations and parameters that characterize the physical properties of the system such as its energy, momentum and viscous flow are related to the temperature of the system, scale factor, Hubble's expansion parameter and the matter energy density.     Actividad neurotóxica y cambios ultraestructurales en musculos causados por el veneno de la araña viuda marrón Latrodectus geometricus

    Brown widow spider (Latrodectus geometricus) venom (BrWSV) produces few local lesions and intense systemic reactions such as cramps, harsh muscle pains, nausea, vomiting and hypertension. Approximately 16 protein bands under reducing conditions and ~ 14 bands under non-reducing conditions on a 12.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were observed. Neurotoxic clinical manifestations were confirmed in vivo, while proteolytic activity was demonstrated on gelatine film. Severe ultrastructural damages in mice skeletal muscles were observed at 3, 6, 12 and 24 h postinjection with at total of 45 µg of venom protein. Infiltration of eosinophils and ruptures of the cellular membranes were observed in the muscles along with swelling of the nuclear cover and interruption of the collagen periodicity. Altered mitochondrias and autophage vacuoles, nuclear indentation and mitochondria without cristae, slight increment of intermyofibrillar and subsarcolemic spaces and myelinic figures formation were also observed. In the capillary, endothelial membrane unfolding into the lumen was noticed; along with myelinic figures compatible with a toxic myopathy. Swollen sarcotubular systems with lysis of membrane, intense mitochondria autophagia and areas without pinocytic vesicles were observed. Swollen mitochondria surrounded by necrotic areas, myofibrillar disorganization and big vacuolas of the sarcotubular system, degenerated mitochondrium with formation of myelinic figure was seen. Glycogenosomes with small particulate, muscle type glycogen was noticed. Autophagic vacuole (autophagolysosomes) and necrotic areas were also noticed. These damages may be due to interactive effects of the multifactorial action of venom components. However, Latrodectus geometricus venom molecules may also be utilized as neuro therapeutic tools, as they affect neuronal activities with high affinity and selectivity. To our knowledge, the present study is the first ultrastructural report in the literature of muscle injuries and neurological and proteolytic activities caused by BrWSV.El veneno de la araña viuda marrón (Latrodectus geometricus) produce pocas lesiones locales pero intensas reacciones sistémicas, tales como calambres, dolores musculares severos, nauseas, vómitos e hipertensión arterial. Se observaron ~ 16 bandas de proteina bajo condiciones reducidas y ~14 bandas bajo condiciones no reducidas en electroforesis en geles de poliacrilamida al 12.5%. Las manifestaciones neurotóxicas clínicas fueron confirmadas in vivo, mientras que la actividad proteolítica fue demostrada en una placa de gelatina. Los músculos de ratón se estudiaron durante las 3, 6, 12 y 24 horas después de ser inyectados con 45 µg de proteina de veneno. Los músculos fueron seriamente dañados por este veneno. Se demostró una infiltracción de células eosinofílicas y rupturas de membranas celulares en tejido muscular, al mismo tiempo un fuerte incremento de la membrana nuclear y una interrupción de la periodicidad del colágeno. Se observaron daños en la mitocondria y sin cristaes, vacuolas autofágicas e indentación nuclear. Se notó un aumento de la luz de los espacios intermiofibrilares y subsarcolemicos. En los capilares fue visible un desdoblamiento de la membrana endotelial hacia el lúmen vascular. Del mismo modo, fue visto un hinchamiento del sistema sarcotubular con lisis de las membranas; intensa autofagia de mitocondrias y áreas sin vesículas pinocíticas. Fue además observado, glucogenosomas con glucogeno particulado. Se observaron vacuolas autofágicas (autofagolisosomas) y áreas de necrosis. Estos daños podrían ser atribuídos a los efectos interactivos de una acción multifactorial de los componentes del veneno
