Power Systems Monitoring and Control using Telecom Network Management Standards

    Get PDF
Historically, different solutions have been developed for power systems control and telecommunications network management environments. The former was characterized by proprietary solutions, while the latter has been involved for years in a strong standardization process guided by criteria of openness. Today, power systems control standardization is in progress, but it is at an early stage compared to the telecommunications management area, especially in terms of information modeling. Today, control equipment tends to exhibit more computational power, and communication lines have increased their performance. These trends hint at some conceptual convergence between power systems and telecommunications networks from a management perspective. This convergence leads us to suggest the application of well-established telecommunications management standards for power systems control. This paper shows that this is a real medium-to-long term possibility

Adolescent Compliance with anti-COVID Measures. Is It Related to Substance Use?

    Get PDF
Prevalence rates of compliance with anti-COVID measures have been widely studied, but little is known about this issue in early adolescence. Moreover, the relation between substance use and compliance with anti-COVID regulations is still unexplored. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of compliance with anti-COVID measures by adolescents and the link between substance use and compliance with anti-COVID regulations. This was a cross-sectional study including 909 participants (Mage = 12.57; SD = 0.81). The most complied measure was mask-wearing, followed by avoiding hug/kiss friends and, finally, social distancing. All substance use negatively correlated with compliance with measures. However, strong alcohol and tobacco were the only substances significantly related to less compliance of anti-COVID measures after controlling for covariates. These results provide evidence about the relation between substance use and compliance with anti-COVID measures. Strategies addressed to decrease substance use could be effective to reduce behaviours associated with coronavirus transmission

Light as an energy source in continuous cultures of bacteriorhodopsin-containing halobacteria

The role of light as an energy source for slightly aereated cultures of halobac teria was studied, using continuous cultures with low nutrient concentrations and a low oxygen supply. A series of experiments were carried out with non illuminated and differently illuminated cultures and with ditferent oxygen transfer rates. Under low oxygen availability, light proved to be a decisively important energy source that allowed the populations to reach higher growth rates and much higher population densities. Oxygen inftuenced the growth over only a minimal level, below which neither the illuminated nor the dark cultures were atfected by the oxygen transfer rate. From these results, it appears that the bacteriorhodop sin-mediated energy supply could have a very important role for the ecology of halobacteria in their microaerophilic habitats. In the illuminated cultures, cells that originated purple colonies on plates appeared. These cells, which could be bacteriorhodopsin-constitutive mutants, are now being studied

Coupled-oscillator model to analyze the interaction between a quartz resonator and trapped ions

The novel application of a piezoelectric quartz resonator for the detection of trapped ions has enabled the observation of the quartz-ions interaction under nonequilibrium conditions, opening new perspectives for high-sensitive motional frequency measurements of radioactive particles. Energized quartz crystals have (long) decay-time constants in the order of milliseconds, permitting the coherent detection of charged particles within short time scales. In this paper we develop a detailed model governing the interaction between trapped 40Ca+ ions and a quartz resonator connected to a low-noise amplifier. We apply this model to experimental data and extract the ions’ reduced-cyclotron frequency in our 7-T Penning trap setup. We also obtain an upper limit for the coupling constant g with the present quartz-amplifier-trap (QAT) configuration. The study of the reduced-cyclotron frequency is especially important for the use of this resonator in precision Penning-trap mass spectrometry. The improvement in sensitivity can be accomplished by increasing the quality factor of the QAT configuration, which in turn will improve the performance of the system towards the strong-coupling regim

Presentation at the 2021 KDD Workshop on Applied Data Science for Healthcare, 15.08.21 - 16.08.21. https://dshealthkdd.github.io/dshealth-2021/The acquisition of Antimicrobial Multidrug Resistance (AMR) in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICU) is a major global concern. This study analyses data in the form of multivariate time series (MTS) from 3476 patients recorded at the ICU of University Hospital of Fuenlabrada (Madrid) from 2004 to 2020. 18% of the patients acquired AMR during their stay in the ICU. The goal of this paper is an early prediction of the development of AMR. Towards that end, we leverage the time-series cluster kernel (TCK) to learn similarities between MTS. To evaluate the effectiveness of TCK as a kernel, we applied several dimensionality reduction techniques for visualization and classification tasks. The experimental results show that TCK allows identifying a group of patients that acquire the AMR during the first 48 hours of their ICU stay, and it also provides good classification capabilities

The Influence of Different Dimensions of the Parent–Child Relationship in Childhood as Longitudinal Predictors of Substance Use in Late Adolescence. The Mediating Role of Self-Control

Abstract This study examined longitudinal links between several dimensions of parent–child relationship and adolescent substance use, and tested the role of self-control in mediating these. Data came from the Zurich Project on the Social Development from Childhood to Adulthood. Validated questionnaires were used to measure parent–child domains at age 11, self-control at age 13, and substance use at ages 13, 15, 17, and 20. Low positive parenting and parental supervision, as well as aversive parenting, correlated with substance use. Linear regression model revealed that aversive parenting, low child disclosure, low positive parenting, and low parental involvement at age 11 predicted substance use at different stages of adolescence. These associations were mediated by low self-control at age 13. Involving parents and increasing their knowledge about desirable parental practices and ways to help their children to develop adequate self-control could be an effective element in substance use prevention strategies

Ostracods as palaeoenvironmental tracers: evolution of the southern area of the Doñana National Park from the lower Pliocene to recent

En el Holoceno Superior, se detecta un evento tsunami- génico caracterizado por la erosión de sedimentos eólicos y su depósito sobre medios submarealesThe analysis of the geological units and the ostracod assemblages of a long core collected in the southern Doñana National Park (SW Spain) permits to deduce an evolution from shallow marine palaeoenvironments (Lower Pliocene) to a brackish lagoon (Upper Pleistocene-Holocene) and the deposit of aeolian sediments (<1900 yr BP), with an intermediate alluvial stage during the Pleistocene. In the Late Holocene, a tsunamigenic event was detected, with the erosion of aeolian sediments and a subsequent deposit on subtidal environment

We studied an aequipondium or counterweight balance in bronze with figurative representation of a female divinity. He appeared in front of Tarragona port and is preserved in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT). We emphasize its exceptional weight of 38 kg, the largest, far ahead of all aequipondia hitherto known in the Roman world. Statera belong to a giant or balance arm. This scale would necessarily be mounted on a large frame or machina, capable of weighing huge loads of up to 1500 kg or more. By place of discovery and its high artistic and technical qualities propose relate to public balance (ponderarium or sacomarium) of roman port. The female divinity represented should be an image of Aequitas, Equity, numen protector of fair dealing in the weights and measures of the markets.
