Short-Term Changes in Algometry, Inclinometry, Stabilometry, and Urinary pH Analysis After a Thoracolumbar Junction Manipulation in Patients with Kidney Stones
Objectives: To determine the efficacy of a high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation of the thoracolumbar junction in different urologic and musculoskeletal parameters in subjects suffering from renal lithiasis.
Design: Randomized, controlled blinded clinical study.
Settings/Location: The Nephrology departments of two hospitals and one private consultancy of physiotherapy in Valencia (Spain).
Subjects: Forty-six patients suffering from renal lithiasis.
Interventions: The experimental group (EG, n¿=¿23) received a spinal manipulation of the thoracolumbar junction, and the control group (CG, n¿=¿23) received a sham procedure.
Outcome measures: Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) of both quadratus lumborum and spinous processes from T10 to L1, lumbar flexion range of motion, stabilometry, and urinary pH were measured before and immediately after the intervention. A comparison between pre- and postintervention phases was performed and an analysis of variance for repeated measures using time (pre- and postintervention) as intrasubject variable and group (CG or EG) as intersubject variable.
Results: Intragroup comparison showed a significant improvement for the EG in the lumbar flexion range of motion (p¿<¿0.001) and in all the PPT (p¿<¿0.001 in all cases). Between-group comparison showed significant changes in PPT in quadratus lumborum (p¿<¿0.001), as well as in the spinous processes of all of the evaluated levels (p¿<¿0.05). No changes in urinary pH were observed (p¿=¿0.419).
Conclusion: Spinal manipulation of the thoracolumbar junction seems to be effective in short term to improve pain sensitivity, as well as to increase the lumbar spine flexion

A Short-Term Resistance Training Circuit Improved Antioxidants in Sedentary Adults with Down Syndrome
Previous studies have found aerobic training improved oxidative damage in people with Down syndrome (DS). However, there is a lack of information regarding the influence of resistance training on redox imbalance in this population. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the effect of resistance training (RT) on antioxidant defence system in sedentary adults with DS. Thirty-six male adults with DS were recruited through different community support groups. Eighteen were randomly assigned to perform a circuit RT program with 6 stations, 3 days/week for 12 weeks. Plasma total antioxidant status (TAS), reduced glutathione (GHS), ascorbate, serum alpha-tocopherol, and erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity were assessed. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonyl groups (CG) were assessed as markers of oxidative damage. Muscle strength was also measured. Dynamic torque of knee extensors and flexors as well as maximal handgrip strength was significantly improved after the completion of the training program. Plasma levels of TAS and erythrocyte glutathione reductase (GR) activity were significantly increased. Conversely, MDA and CG levels were significantly reduced. It was concluded RT improved antioxidant defence system and reduced oxidative damage in adults with DS. Further, long-term studies are required to determine whether the increased antioxidant system may improve clinical outcomes of adults with DS
Short-term emission line and continuum variations in Mrk110
We present results of a variability campaign of Mrk110 performed with the
9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) at McDonald Observatory. The high S/N
spectra cover most of the optical range. They were taken from 1999 November
through 2000 May. The average interval between the observations was 7.3 days
and the median interval was only 3.0 days. Mrk110 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1
galaxy. During our campaign the continuum flux was in a historically low stage.
Considering the delays of the emission lines with respect to the continuum
variations we could verify an ionization stratification of the BLR. We derived
virial masses of the central black hole from the radial distances of the
different emission lines and from their widths. The calculated central masses
agree within 20%. Furthermore, we identified optical HeI singlet emission lines
emitted in the broad-line region. The observed line fluxes agree with
theoretical predictions. We show that a broad wing on the red side of the
[OIII]5007 line is caused by the HeI singlet line at 5016A.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, A&A Latex. Accepted for publication in A&A Main

Off-target effects of bacillus Calmette–Guerin vaccination on immune responses to SARS-CoV-2: implications for protection against severe COVID-19
Background and objectives. Because of its beneficial off-target
effects against non-mycobacterial infectious diseases, bacillus
Calmette–Guerin (BCG) vaccination might be an accessible early
intervention to boost protection against novel pathogens.
Multiple epidemiological studies and randomised controlled trials
(RCTs) are investigating the protective effect of BCG against
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Using samples from
participants in a placebo-controlled RCT aiming to determine
whether BCG vaccination reduces the incidence and severity of
COVID-19, we investigated the immunomodulatory effects of BCG
on in vitro immune responses to SARS-CoV-2. Methods. This study
used peripheral blood taken from participants in the multicentre
RCT and BCG vaccination to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on
healthcare workers (BRACE trial). The whole blood taken from
BRACE trial participants was stimulated with c-irradiated SARS CoV-2-infected or mock-infected Vero cell supernatant. Cytokine
responses were measured by multiplex cytokine analysis, and
single-cell immunophenotyping was made by flow cytometry.
Results. BCG vaccination, but not placebo vaccination, reduced
SARS-CoV-2-induced secretion of cytokines known to be associated
with severe COVID-19, including IL-6, TNF-a and IL-10. In addition,
BCG vaccination promoted an effector memory phenotype in both
CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and an activation of eosinophils in response
to SARS-CoV-2. Conclusions. The immunomodulatory signature of BCG’s off-target effects on SARS-CoV-2 is consistent with a
protective immune response against severe COVID-19
