    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of a spacecraft attitude control system based on magnetic actuators designed for low Earth orbits. The control system is designed by using a nonlinear control technique based on the approximating sequence of Riccati equations. The behavior of the satellite is discussed under perturbations and model uncertainties. Simulation results are presented when the control system is able to guide the spacecraft to the desired attitude in a variety of different conditions

SUMOylation regulates LKB1 localization and its oncogenic activity in liver cancer

BACKGROUND: Even though liver kinase B1 (LKB1) is usually described as a tumor suppressor in a wide variety of tissues, it has been shown that LKB1 aberrant expression is associated with bad prognosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Herein we have overexpressed LKB1 in human hepatoma cells and by using histidine pull-down assay we have investigated the role of the hypoxia-related post-translational modification of Small Ubiquitin-related Modifier (SUMO)ylation in the regulation of LKB1 oncogenic role. Molecular modelling between LKB1 and its interactors, involved in regulation of LKB1 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and LKB1 activity, was performed. Finally, high affinity SUMO binding entities-based technology were used to validate our findings in a pre-clinical mouse model and in clinical HCC. FINDINGS: We found that in human hepatoma cells under hypoxic stress, LKB1 overexpression increases cell viability and aggressiveness in association with changes in LKB1 cellular localization. Moreover, by using site-directed mutagenesis, we have shown that LKB1 is SUMOylated by SUMO-2 at Lys178 hampering LKB1 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and fueling hepatoma cell growth. Molecular modelling of SUMO modified LKB1 further confirmed steric impedance between SUMOylated LKB1 and the STe20-Related ADaptor cofactor (STRADα), involved in LKB1 export from the nucleus. Finally, we provide evidence that endogenous LKB1 is modified by SUMO in pre-clinical mouse models of HCC and clinical HCC, where LKB1 SUMOylation is higher in fast growing tumors. INTERPRETATION: Overall, SUMO-2 modification of LKB1 at Lys178 mediates LKB1 cellular localization and its oncogenic role in liver cancer. The swine pathogen Streptococcus suis is a Gram-positive bacterium which causes infections in pigs, with an impact in animal health and in the livestock industry, and it is also an important zoonotic agent. During the infection process, surface and secreted proteins are essential in the interaction between microorganisms and their hosts. Here, we report a comparative proteomic analysis of the proteins released to the extracellular milieu in six human clinical isolates belonging to the highly prevalent and virulent serotype 2. The total secreted content was precipitated and analyzed by GeLC-MS/MS. In the six strains, 144 proteins assigned to each of the categories of extracellular or surface proteins were identified, as well as 680 predicted cytoplasmic proteins, many of which are putative moonlighting proteins. Of the nine predicted signal peptide-I secreted proteins, seven had relevant antigenic potential when they were analyzed through bioinformatic analysis. This is the first work comparing the exoproteome fraction of several human isolates of this important pathogen

We studied the downy birch forests that grow in the headwaters of rivers in the mountains in NW Iberian Peninsula and their differences from other previously described birch forests. To do this, an ordination analysis was done on a database of 342 relevés (144 unpublished). As a result, four riparian forest associations were recognized in the territory, all of them belonging to the suballiance Saxifrago spathularis-Fraxinenion excelsioris (Hyperico androsaemi-Alnion glutinosae, Alno-Fraxinetaliaexcelsioris, Salici-Populetea). Two associations (Carici reuterianae-Betuletum celtibericae and Violo palustris-Betuletum pubescentis) have been previously described, but the other two (Chaerophyllo hirsuti-Betuletum pubescentis and Valeriano officinalis-Betuletum pubescentis) are described here for the first time. We characterized their floristic composition, ecological features and distribution, and evaluated their conservation value under the criteria of the 92/43/CEE Community Directive, and with regard to national and regional lists of protected speciesEn este trabajo se aborda el estudio de las comunidades de abedulares riparios presentes en los tramosde cabecera de diversos macizos montañosos del extremo NW Ibérico y su diferenciación frente a otros tipos de abedulares previamente descritos.

Social constructivism is a learning approach in which students actively construct their own knowledge by way of experiences and interactions with others. As such, it is important to highlight both individual and group-based reflection practices in pre-service teacher training as a key aspect for improving teaching practice. This paper presents the results of the design and implementation of a training programme of 7 sessions (8.5 h of class participation plus 25 h of personal homework) for pre-service secondary school science teachers, who were asked to design a gamification resource and an e-rubric to evaluate it. Subsequent improvement of this e-rubric was enhanced by performing different reflection activities at key moments. The programme was carried out by 50 Spanish pre-service teachers from Málaga (Spain). Data collection centred on the e-rubrics designed, the emotions experienced and the possible transfer to real-life practice performed six months later. The impact of reflections on the evaluation was studied by analysing the evolution of the categories proposed by the participants for the e-rubric at different times, with marked changes being found during design and preparation of the gamification resource, and only very minor changes post-implementation. In addition, a group-based criteria consensus session favoured a more in-depth reflection. Interest was the main emotion experienced by pre-service teachers, especially during preparation and use of the resource. The programme also had a marked impact on transfer of the e-rubric into practice, as did the designed resource, although to a lesser extent. This work is part of the R&D project with reference PID2019-105765GA-I00, entitled: "Citizens with critical thinking: A challenge for teachers in science education", financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain in the 2019 call.

    Get PDF
Psychological treatments that emphasize the auto-management have turned out to be commonly adapted like alternative to the medical intervention in the chronic pain. Unfortunately this approximation often fails in compromising to a significant portion of individuals towards treatments and many abandons and relapses. The aim of this study was to verify the predictive validity of States of Change Model in chronic pain using the Pain States of Change Questionnaire (PSOCQ) to predict adherence and therapeutic results. The sampled consisted of 48 patients of chronic pains-fibromyalgia recruited in a public pain clinic of Seville (Spain). The half of them followed a cognitive-behavioral intervention, and another half a program of auto-management guided by expert patients. The results support the predictive validity of the PSOCQ, while in all that: a) patient with less change motivation had less probability of completing the treatment; b) change motivation increased as effect of the treatment; and c) a less change motivation was associated to more gravity of the disorder. The discussion centers of the interest of considering change motivation to improve therapeutic efficiency.

The aim of this paper is to study endoscopic localizations and macroscopic appearance of canine gastric carcinoma. Clinical histories of seventeen dogs were analyzed. All cases were diagnosed of gastric carcinoma by Upper Digestive Endoscopy and Biopsy. The results of this study show that pyloric antrum and lesser curvature are the most frequent locations of canine gastric carcinoma: in 64.7% of the cases pyloric antrum was affected, even though some of them were extended to other zones of the stomach as well; on the other hand, 47% of the studied cases affected the lesser curvature, but only 11.8% were limited to that location
