    Combination of DROOL rules and Protégé knowledge bases in the ONTO-H annotation tool

    ONTO-H is a semi-automatic collaborative tool for the semantic annotation of documents, built as a Protégé 3.0 tab plug-in. Among its multiple functionalities aimed at easing the document annotation process, ONTO-H uses a rule-based system to create cascading annotations out from a single drag and drop operation from a part of a document into an already existing concept or instance of the domain ontology being used for annotation. It also gives support to the detection of name conflicts and instance duplications in the creation of the annotations. The rule system runs on top of the open source rule engine DROOLS and is connected to the domain ontology used for annotation by means of an ad-hoc programmed Java proxy

    El Instituto Geográfico Nacional inició en el año 2003 los estudios previos necesarios para un proyecto ambicioso y a la vez esencial para el cumplimiento de sus responsabilidades básicas, la implantación de un Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG) corporativo que atendiera a tres finalidades fundamentales: a) la gestión integrada de los datos geográficos y cartográficos que produce, en forma de Bases Cartográficas Numéricas (BCN) y en forma de mapas, respectivamente, incluyendo su actualización coordinada; b) la publicación de tales datos en papel, en soporte digital y de manera electrónica (Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales (IDE)); c) el análisis y consulta desde clientes ligeros y pesados para todo tipo de aplicaciones.     Liquid porcine plasma is an animal origin raw material for the manufacturing process of spray-dried porcine plasma that is used in pig nutrition worldwide. In previous studies we found that the application of ultraviolet light C (UV-C) in liquid plasma that was inoculated with a variety of bacteria or viruses of importance in the swine industry can be considered as redundant safety steps because in general achieve around 4 logs reduction for most of these pathogens. However, the final validation of the UV-C light as safety feature should be conducted with commercial liquid plasma and using the pig bioassay model. As a first objective, the potential infectivity of a raw liquid plasma product collected from an abattoir was tested by means of a swine bioassay. We used Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2), a ubiquitous virus that has been systematically detected by PCR in porcine plasma at abattoirs as selection criteria for commercial liquid plasma lot. As a second aim of the study, the effects of different doses of UV-C irradiation on the selected raw liquid plasma were assayed in the animal bioassay. Moreover, other swine infecting agents, including Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), were also determined in the original plasma and monitored in the inoculated animals. Pigs negative for PCV-2 and PRRSV genome and antibodies were allotted to one of five groups (6 to 8 pigs/ group) and injected intra-peritoneally with 10 mL of their assigned inoculum at 50 d of age. Negative control pigs (group 1) were injected with PBS. Positive control pigs (group 5) were injected with a PCV-2 inoculum. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were injected with liquid porcine plasma that had been subjected to 0 (raw plasma), 3000 or 9000 J/L UV-C irradiation, respectively. Group 2 pigs (0 J/L UV-C) got infection by PRRSV but no PCV-2 infection or seroconversion. However, one pig from group 2 seroconverted to Rotavirus A (RVA) and Hepatitis E virus (HEV) and three group 2 pigs seroconverted to Porcine parvovirus (PPV). Groups 1, 3 and 4 pigs showed no evidence of infection or seroconversion associated with the tested viruses or any other pathogens found in the liquid plasma before UV-C irradiation. Group 5 pigs developed PCV-2 infectivity as expected. UV-C irradiation of liquid plasma at 3000 and 9000 J/L was effective in preventing PRRSV and other pathogens transmission.     ObjetivoEstudiar la influencia de la hipertensión pulmonar (HTP) en la evolución de los ancianos sometidos a sustitución valvular aórtica (SVA).Material y métodosDesde octubre de 1999 hasta noviembre de 2009, 517 ancianos (rango 70-87 años) fueron sometidos a SVA. Trescientos cincuenta y cinco (68,7%) enfermos (grupo I) tenían hipertensión pulmonar (ligera 157; moderada 149; grave 49) frente a 162 (31,3%) (grupo II) con presiones pulmonares normales. El seguimiento medio fue de 4,3 años.ResultadosLa edad media fue de 76,4±3,9 años. La fibrilación auricular (29,5 vs 5,6%; p=0,001) y la insuficiencia mitral moderada preoperatorias (13,7 vs 5,1%; p=0,003) fueron más frecuentes en el grupo I. La mortalidad hospitalaria fue 4,3%, siendo significativamente superior en los pacientes con HTP (I: 5,7% vs II: 0,8%; p=0,027). Los pacientes con HTP moderada (7,3%) o grave (13,9%) tuvieron una mortalidad significativamente superior a la de los pacientes con HTP ligera (1,7%) (p=0,016). La supervivencia actuarial a los 5 años, de los pacientes dados de alta, aunque superior en los pacientes sin HTP (I: 80,9% vs II: 90,6%; p=0,162), no alcanzó significación. La HTP moderada-grave se asoció de manera independiente a la mortalidad hospitalaria (odds ratio [OR]: 2,07; p=0,015), pero no a una menor supervivencia en el seguimiento.ConclusionesLa HTP moderada-grave es un factor de riesgo independiente de mortalidad hospitalaria en los ancianos sometidos a SVA. Spray-dried samples were stored at either 4·0 ± 3·0°C or 23·0 ± 0·3°C for 15 days. Bacterial counts of each Salmonella spp., were completed for all samples. For both Salmonella spp., spray-drying at both outlet temperatures reduced bacterial counts about 3 logs at RT 0 s, while there was about a 5·5 log reduction at RT 60 s.     Association between heavy metals and metalloids in topsoil and mental health in the adult population of Spain

    Despite the biological plausibility of the association between heavy metal exposure and mental health disorders, epidemiological evidence remains scarce. The objective was to estimate the association between heavy metals and metalloids in soil and the prevalence of mental disorders in the adult population of Spain. Methods Individual data came from the Spanish National Health Survey 2011–2012, 18,073 individuals residing in 1772 census sections. Mental health was measured with the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. The concentration estimates of heavy metal and metalloid levels in topsoil (upper soil horizon) came from the Geochemical Atlas of Spain based on 13,317 soil samples. Levels of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and manganese (Mn) were estimated in each census section by “ordinary Kriging”. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated by multilevel logistic regression models. Results Compared with the lowest Pb concentration levels quartile, the OR for the second quartile was 1.29 (95%CI: 1.11–1.50), increasing progressively to 1.37 (95%CI: 1.17–1.60) and 1.51 (95%CI: 1.27–1.79) in the third and fourth quartiles, respectively. For As, the association was observed in the third and fourth quartiles: 1.21 (95%CI: 1.04–1.41) and 1.42 (95% CI: 1.21–1.65), respectively. Cd was associated also following a gradient from the second quartile: 1.34 (95%CI: 1.15–1.57) through the fourth: 1.84 (95%CI: 1.56–2.15). In contrast, Mn only showed a positive association at the second quartile. Additionally, individuals consuming vegetables > once a day the OR for the fourth quartile of Pb concentration, vs. the first, increased to 2.93 (95%CI: 1.97–4.36); similarly for As: 3.00 (95%CI: 2.08–4.31), and for Cd: 3.49 (95%CI: 2.33–5.22). Conclusions Living in areas with a higher concentration of heavy metals and metalloids in soil was associated with an increased probability of having a mental disorder.     Description of the annual reproductive cycle of wreckfish; Polyprion americanus, in captivity

    Successful spontaneous reproduction and the production of viable offspring of wild fish in captivity can take some years of adaptation, and may also involve different environmental conditions, sex ratios and densities compared to natural populations. We followed the reproductive cycle of wreckfish Polyprion americanus—a late maturing, deep-sea benthic species—in captivity in three different broodstocks in Spain under natural photoperiod and temperature, and one broodstock in Greece under a constant temperature of 16 °C for two consecutive years, to describe the reproductive cycle of the species and the associated sex steroid hormone profiles. Oogenesis begun in the fall and post-vitellogenic oocytes of 1250 μm were present between March and June. Males were in spermiation condition and produced good-quality sperm throughout the year, regardless of the temperature profile to which they were exposed. Some females completed oogenesis, underwent oocyte maturation, and spawned spontaneously under both constant and fluctuating temperatures. The sex steroid hormones of both males and females followed the already-known profiles during fish gametogenesis, except for 17,20β-dihydroxy-progesterone, which did not seem to be related to either female or male maturation. The female reproductive dysfunctions that were identified included (a) the arrest of oogenesis at the cortical alveoli stage in certain females; (b) the failure to undergo oocyte maturation in others; and (c) the production of large percentages of unfertilized eggs from the females that spawned spontaneously. Our study suggests that reproduction in captivity is possible in wreckfish maintained under typical marine aquaculture conditions, but that reliable spawning and production of high-quality eggs may require some years of adaptation to captivity, before the reproductive dysfunctions will be overcome.Versión del edito

    Evaluation of ultraviolet‐C and spray‐drying processes as two independent inactivation steps on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 and K99 strains inoculated in fresh unconcentrated porcine plasma

    The objectives of this study were to assess the effectiveness of an ultraviolet (UV‐C, 254 nm) irradiation system and the spray‐drying method as two independent safety steps on inactivation of Escherichia coli K88 and K99 spiked in porcine plasma at 6·46 ± 0·04 log10 ml−1 and 6·78 ± 0·67 log10 ml−1 respectively for UV‐C method, and at 7·31 ± 0·39 log10 ml−1 and 7·66 ± 0·11 log10 ml−1, respectively for the spray‐drying method. The UV‐C method was performed at different UV light doses (from 750 to 9000 J l−1) using a pilot plant UV‐C device working under turbulent flow. Spray‐drying treatment was done at inlet temperature 220 ± 1°C and two different outlet temperatures, 80 ± 1°C or 70 ± 1°C. Results indicated that UV‐C treatment induced a 4 log10 viability reduction for both E. coli at 3000 J l−1. Full inactivation of both E. coli strains was achieved in all spray‐dried samples dehydrated at both outlet temperatures. The special UV‐C system design for turbid liquid porcine plasma is a novel treatment that can provide an additional redundant biosafety feature that can be incorporated into the manufacturing process for spray‐dried animal plasma.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
