Multiple hypothesis testing and clustering with mixtures of non-central t-distributions applied in microarray data analysis
Multiple testing analysis, based on clustering methodologies, is usually applied in Microarray Data Analysis for comparisons between pair of groups. In this paper, we generalize this methodology to deal with multiple comparisons among more than two groups obtained from microarray expressions of genes. Assuming normal data, we define a statistic which depends on sample means and sample variances, distributed as a non-central t-distribution. As we consider multiple comparisons among groups, a mixture of non-central t-distributions is derived. The estimation of the components of mixtures is obtained via a Bayesian approach, and the model is applied in a multiple comparison problem from a microarray experiment obtained from gorilla, bonobo and human cultured fibroblasts.Clustering, MCMC computation, Microarray analysis, Mixture distributions, Multiple hypothesis testing, Non-central t-distribution

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an experimental model that is increasingly being used thanks to its easy handling and cultivation, this is the reason why nowadays the studies published with this species has increased. The main objective of this study is to observe the effect of an increase of temperature during the development phase in zebrafish sex determination. Furthermore, it has been studied whether the temperature affects their growth and it also has been studied the sexual dimorphism. All the study was performed with two experimental lines, AB and Tübingen (TU). After applying a temperature change in different ranges of the zebrafish development, they were sexed phenotypically, histologically, and also was measured the weight, the total length, the standard length and the width of each individual. The results show that the effect of temperature on sex determination is slight and depending on the experimental line can move towards masculinization, as in the case of the AB line, or feminization, as in TU line. Referring to growth, it has been observed that the temperature affects the weight but not the length of an individual, and the results obtained for the width were not conclusive. Finally, regarding to the results about sexual dimorphism allow us to observe that in the AB line the features studied helped to differentiate between males and females, but in line TU seems that these features do not allow us to differentiate the sex.

Using weibull mixture distributions to model heterogeneous survival data
In this article we use Bayesian methods to fit a Weibull mixture model with an unknown number of components to possibly right censored survival data. This is done using the recently developed, birth-death MCMC algorithm. We also show how to estimate the survivor function and the expected hazard rate from the MCMA output
Culture Shock in Students from International Academic Mobility
This study describes the experience of international students while studying overseas, and how interacting with a new culture can cause shock at different levels. For doing so, this research was conducted under qualitative methods and implemented at a public university in Pereira, Colombia. The participants were pupils from inbound and outbound academic mobility that participated in exchange programs offered by the UTP. Every student represented a single case; therefore, this project was a descriptive multicase study. Bearing this in mind, the information was gathered through documents, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. To analyze the collected information, the researchers followed a process of contrast and comparison to develop a grounded theory and described the phenomenon under study. Furthermore, based on the findings, it was evidenced that all of the participants went through the four stages of culture shock established by Oberg (1960), and that engaging in these events influenced their lives in the short term; likewise, taking into account the outcomes of this inquiry, the researchers made some suggestions to the ORI, so they can help future international students in their adaptation process. According to Furnham (2010) to diminish the effects of culture shock, it is pivotal that pupils develop Intercultural Communication Competencies (ICC), along with enough accompaniment and orientation during the adjustment to the new cultural and academic systems.

On the dynamic adaptation of Computer Assisted Assessment of free-text answers
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/11768012_54Proceedings of 4th International Conference, AH 2006, Dublin, Ireland, June 21-23, 2006.To our knowledge, every free-text Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) system automatically scores the students and gives feedback to them according to their responses, but, none of them include yet personalization options. The free-text CAA system Atenea [1] had simple adaptation possibilities by keeping static student profiles [2]. In this paper, we present a new adaptive version called Willow. It is based on Atenea and adds the possibility of dynamically choosing the questions to be asked according to their difficulty level, the students’ profile and previous answers. Both Atenea and Willow have been tested with 32 students that manifested their satisfaction after using them. The results stimulate us to continue exploiting the possibilities of incorporating dynamic adaptation to free-text CAA.This work has been sponsored by Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, project number TIN2004-0314
