    Caracterización en la nanoescala de superficies conductoras modificadas con moléculas orgánicas y bio-orgánicas. Estudio experimental y teórico.

    Esta tesis está centrada en el estudio de películas orgánicas delgadas sobre sustratos conductores ampliamente empleados como son el oro y el Grafito Pirolítico Altamente Orientado (HOPG). A través de la combinación de técnicas experimentales electroquímicas y de superficies, sobre todo aquellas para el estudio en la nanoescala, y de cálculos teóricos, se ha realizado el estudio de sistemas de moléculas tioladas autoensambladas y de la polimerización o electrografting de especies altamente reactivas. Los cambios en la estructura y en las propiedades fisicoquímicas de la superficie tras la adsorción de las moléculas han sido ampliamente caracterizados. En el caso de los sistemas autoensamblados sobre superficies metálicas se ha estudiado un sistema aromático-alifático (ácido 4-mercaptobenzoico y undecanotiol) y la adsorción de dos isómeros de la misma molécula (ácido 2-mercaptobenzoico y 4-mercaptobenzoico). Los resultados obtenidos han sido de gran importancia a la hora de entender qué tipo de interacciones alifáticas-aromáticas pueden establecerse en la superficie y cómo afecta la presencia de un segundo grupo funcional anclado a la superficie a la movilidad y autoensamblado de un adsorbato. El uso de estas moléculas está limitado casi exclusivamente a superficies metálicas. Por ello, se ha extendido el estudio al electrografting de especies radicalarias altamente reactivas formadas a través de precursores como sales de aril diazonio o yoduros de arilo. Estos estudios están llevados a cabo prácticamente en su totalidad utilizando 4-nitrobenceno diazonio como especie modificante modelo, estudiándose tanto aspectos fundamentales sobre su adsorción sobre la superficie como el cambio que producen en las propiedades de la misma. Así, se han podido detectar, analizar y explicar los cambios observados en las propiedades conductoras, electrónicas y eléctricas cuando la adsorción de la molécula tiene lugar. Además, se ha establecido cómo afecta la presencia de esta capa molecular a procesos electroquímicos convencionales, como la electrodeposición de oro. Por último, se ha empleado un yoduro de arilo (1-iodo-4-nitrobenceno) con el fin de comparar la morfología en la nanoescala de las películas generadas a partir de diferentes precursores

    The Role of a Double Molecular Anchor on the Mobility and Self-Assembly of Thiols on Au(111): The Case of Mercaptobenzoic Acid

    The dynamics of the self-assembly process of thiol molecules on Au(111) is affected by the interplay between molecule–substrate and molecule–molecule interactions. Therefore, it is interesting to explore the effect of a second anchor to the gold surface, in addition to the S atom, on both the order and the feasibility of phase transitions in self-assembled monolayers. To assess the role of an additional O anchor, we have compared the adsorption of two mercaptobenzoic acid isomers, 2-mercaptobenzoic acid (2-MBA) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), on Au(111). Results from scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques, and density functional theory calculations show that the additional O anchor in 2-MBA hinders surface mobility, reducing domain size and impeding the molecular reorganization involved in phase transition to denser phases on the Au(111) substrates. This knowledge can help to predict the range order and molecular density of the thiol SAM depending on the chemical structure of the adsorbate.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada

    Atypical Lemierre’s syndrome caused by Prevotella oris

    Lemierre’s syndrome is a rare form of severe sepsis secondary to oropharyngeal infection characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with disseminated infections, with the lungs being the most frequent target. We report the case of a previously healthy 15-year-old admitted to the intensive care unit because of septic shock, brain and lung abscesses, and a positive blood culture for Prevotella oris with a clinical presentation compatible with the diagnosis of Lemierre’s syndrome. Conclusion: This is an atypical presentation of Lemierre’s syndrome because of the isolated microorganism

    Morphosedimentary characterization of the Capbreton submarine canyon system, Bay of Biscay (Cantabrian Sea)

    Various studies have been carried out to the declaration of new marine protected areas for their importance for habitats, according to the Natura 2000 Network. One of these sites is a sector of the Capbreton Submarine Canyon System, located in front of the Basque Country coast, in the Bay of Biscay (North Atlantic). During the Intemares_CapBreton 0619 and 0620 surveys; bathymetric, backscatter, high-resolution parametric data and samples of sediments, rocks and benthic communities from the seabed were acquired. The study was completed by recording video transects with the underwater vehicle ROTV Politolana from the IEO. The processing and analysis of the geophysical information has allowed obtaining a detailed bathymetry grid of 10 × 10 m, from which the first morphosedimentary characterization of the system of tributary canyons to the E-W trending main canyon and its interfluves has been made. One of the main features of this canyon system is the presence of a large pockmark field on adjacent platforms between canyons, located between 500 and 1000 m water depth. Within this field, pockmarks are shown as circular to elliptical depressions, most likely related to gas rich-fluid emissions to the subsurface.Versión del edito

    Spectroelectrochemical behavior of polycrystalline gold electrode modified by reverse micelles.

    The increasing demand for raising the reliability of electronic contacts has led to the development of methods that protect metal surfaces against atmospheric corrosion agents. This severe problem implies an important economic cost annually but small amounts of corrosion inhibitors can control, decrease or avoid reactions between a metal and its environment. In this regard, surfactant inhibitors have displayed many advantages such as low price, easy fabrication, low toxicity and high inhibition efficiency. For this reason, in this article, the spectroelectrochemical behavior of polycrystalline gold electrode modified by reverse micelles (water/polyethyleneglycol-dodecylether (BRIJ 30)/n-heptane) is investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), potentiodynamic methods and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Main results indicate a strong adsorption of a monolayer of micelles on the gold substrate in which electron tunneling conduction is still possible. Therefore, this method of increasing the corrosion resistance of gold contacts is usable only in conditions of long-term storage but not in the operation of devices with such contacts. In this regard, the micelle coating must be removed from the surface of the gold contacts before use. Finally, the aim of the present work is to understand the reactions occurring at the surfactant/metal interface, which may help to improve the fabrication of novel electrodes

    Abatacept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and interstitial lung disease: A national multicenter study of 63 patients

    OBJECTIVE: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is one of the most serious complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the present study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of abatacept (ABA) in patients with ILD associated to RA. METHODS: National multicenter, non-controlled, open-label registry study of RA patients with ILD treated with ABA. RESULTS: 63 patients (36 women) with RA-associated ILD undergoing ABA therapy were studied. The mean ± standard deviation age at the time of the study was 63.2 ± 9.8 years. The median duration of RA and ILD from diagnosis were 6.8 and 1 year, respectively. RA was seropositive in 55 patients (87.3%). In 15 (23.8%) of 63 patients the development of ILD was closely related to the administration of synthetic or biologic disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. After a follow-up of 9.4 ± 3.2 months, two-thirds of patients remained stable whereas one-quarter experienced improvement in the Modified Medical Research Council scale. At that time forced vital capacity remained stable in almost two-thirds of patents and improved in one out of five patients assessed. Also, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide remained stable in almost two-thirds and showed improvement in a quarter of the patients assessed. At 12 months, 50% of the 22 patients in whom chest HRCT scan was performed due persistence of respiratory symptoms showed stabilization, 8 (36.4%) improvement and 3 worsening of the HRCT scan pattern. Eleven of 63 patients had to discontinue ABA, mainly due to adverse events. TOI-1759 b was observed by TESS to transit in Sectors 16, 17, and 24, with only one transit observed per sector, creating an ambiguity regarding the orbital period of the planet candidate. Ground-based photometric observations, combined with radial-velocity measurements obtained with the CARMENES spectrograph, confirm an actual period of 18.85019 ± 0.00014 days. A joint analysis of all available photometry and radial velocities reveals a radius of 3.17 ± 0.10 R⊕ and a mass of 10.8 ± 1.5 M⊕. Combining this with the stellar properties derived for TOI-1759 (R⋆ = 0.597 ± 0.015 R⊙; M⋆ = 0.606 ± 0.020 M⊙; Teff = 4065 ± 51 K), we compute a transmission spectroscopic metric (TSM) value of over 80 for the planet, making it a good target for transmission spectroscopy studies. TOI-1759 b is among the top five temperate, small exoplanets (Teq 200 days seem to be present in our radial velocities. While our data suggest both could arise from stellar activity, the later signal's source and periodicity are hard to pinpoint given the ∼200 days baseline of our radial-velocity campaign with CARMENES. Longer baseline radial-velocity campaigns should be performed in order to unveil the true nature of this long-period signal. © 2022. The Author(s).     HTLV-1 infection in solid organ transplant donors and recipients in Spain

    HTLV-1 infection is a neglected disease, despite infecting 10-15 million people worldwide and severe illnesses develop in 10% of carriers lifelong. Acknowledging a greater risk for developing HTLV-1 associated illnesses due to immunosuppression, screening is being widely considered in the transplantation setting. Herein, we report the experience with universal HTLV testing of donors and recipients of solid organ transplants in a survey conducted in Spain. All hospitals belonging to the Spanish HTLV network were invited to participate in the study. Briefly, HTLV antibody screening was performed retrospectively in all specimens collected from solid organ donors and recipients attended since the year 2008. A total of 5751 individuals were tested for HTLV antibodies at 8 sites. Donors represented 2312 (42.2%), of whom 17 (0.3%) were living kidney donors. The remaining 3439 (59.8%) were recipients. Spaniards represented nearly 80%. Overall, 9 individuals (0.16%) were initially reactive for HTLV antibodies. Six were donors and 3 were recipients. Using confirmatory tests, HTLV-1 could be confirmed in only two donors, one Spaniard and another from Colombia. Both kidneys of the Spaniard were inadvertently transplanted. Subacute myelopathy developed within 1 year in one recipient. The second recipient seroconverted for HTLV-1 but the kidney had to be removed soon due to rejection. Immunosuppression was stopped and 3 years later the patient remains in dialysis but otherwise asymptomatic. The rate of HTLV-1 is low but not negligible in donors/recipients of solid organ transplants in Spain. Universal HTLV screening should be recommended in all donor and recipients of solid organ transplantation in Spain. Evidence is overwhelming for very high virus transmission and increased risk along with the rapid development of subacute myelopathy

Para isto, a actuación sanitaria debe seguir unha metodoloxía perfectamente establecida, xa que as actuacións organizadas son as mellores ferramentas de traballo. Así pois, é necesario posibilitar normas de actuación o máis protocolizadas posible, para poder traballar nas mellores condicións de seguridade e manter unhas directrices xerais, onde cada persoa coñeza tanto a súa función como a do resto dos componentes do equipo, procedendo, ademais, á súa identificación funcional mediante signos externos (uniformidade, carteis, identificación, etc.); para facilitar o entendemento e a coordinación de todos os implicados en resolver a situación acaecida. Con este fin, preséntase o Plan de emerxencias que a continuación se expón, nun afán de dar sempre a mellor e máis axeitada resposta; obxectivo primordial desde que a FPUS de Galicia–061 se instaura como responsable da medicina prehospitalaria na nosa comunidade autónoma.La Fundación Pública Urxencias Sanitarias de Galicia-061 es la encargada de proporcionar, desde el momento en que ocurre la emergencia, un control de la situación, una primera evaluación y una asistencia sanitaria que logre salvar el mayor número de vidas y volver a la normalidad lo antes posible. Para esto, la actuación sanitaria debe seguir una metodología perfectamente establecida, ya que las actuaciones organizadas son las mejores herramientas de trabajo. Así pues, es necesario posibilitar normas de actuación lo más protocolizadas posible, para poder trabajar en las mejores condiciones de seguridad y mantener unas directrices generales, donde cada persona conozca tanto su función como la del resto de los componentes del equipo, procediendo, además, a su identificación funcional mediante signos externos (uniformidad, carteles, identificación, etc.); para facilitar el entendimiento y la coordinación de todos los implicados en resolver la situación acaecidad. Con este fin, se presenta el Plan de emergencias que a continuación se expone, en un afán de dar siempre la respuesta mejor y más idónea; objetivo primordial desde que la FPUS de Galicia-061 se instaura como responsable de la medicina prehospitalaria en nuestra comunidad autónoma
