On the optimaL response of q-vortex

Wingtip vortices represent a hazard for the stability of the following airplane in airport highways. These flows have been usually modeled as swirling jets/wakes, which are known to be highly unstable and susceptible to breakdown at high Reynolds numbers for certain flow conditions, but different to the ones present in real flying airplanes. A very recent study based on Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) shows that a large variety of helical responses can be excited and amplified when a harmonic inlet forcing is imposed. In this work, the optimal response of q-vortex (both axial vorticity and axial velocity can be modeled by a Gaussian profile) is studied by considering the time-harmonically forced problem with a certain frequency ω. We first reproduce Guo and Sun’s results for the Lamb-Oseen vortex (no axial flow) to validate our numerical code. In the axisymmetric case m = 0, the system response is the largest when the input frequency is null. The axial flow has a weak influence in the response for any axial velocity intensity. We also consider helical perturbations |m| = 1. These perturbations are excited through a resonance mechanism at moderate and large wavelengths as it is shown in Figure 1. In addition, Figure 2 shows that the frequency at which the optimal gain is obtained is not a continuous function of the axial wavenumber k. At smaller wavelengths, large response is excited by steady forcing. Regarding the axial flow, the unstable response is the largest when the axial velocity intensity, 1/q, is near to zero. For perturbations with higher azimuthal wavenumbers |m| > 1, the magnitudes of the response are smaller than those for helical modes. In order to establish an alternative validation, DNS has been carried out by using a pseudospectral Fourier formulation finding a very good agreement.Universidad de Málaga. On the effect of low blowing ratio continuous jets on wingtip vortex characteristics

Vortices are an unavoidable effect of flight, which appear behind the wing with a bounded length. The strength of these vortices, which are extremely stable, is due to the lift force [1]. That is the reason why this phenomenon is especially relevant during take-off and landing operations. In these situations, when aircraft are departing from or arriving to the airport runways, the following aircraft might feel two counter-rotating vortices which remain long time under normal environmental conditions. Unfortunately, this huge rotation of airflow patterns always destabilizes the following aircraft. Consequently, trailing vortices have a mighty influence on the air traffic control of airport runways, and they have justified the research interest in this topic since the 1960's [2]. However, aeronautical engineers are still searching for different technological strategies to breakdown these wingtip vortices.Short-Term Postdoctoral Stay of Talent Attraction Plan of Andalucía TECH ICE. Thinking Outside the Blue Box: Induced Fit within a Unique Self-Assembled Polycationic Cyclophane

This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in Journal of the American Chemical Society.[Abstract] We present herein the development of a new polycationic molecular receptor, inspired by the ubiquitous cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)cyclophane (“blue box”). Our analogue, the “white box”, has been easily self-assembled on a preparative scale in water, using a template-assisted process by acyl hydrazone bonding of complementary bis(pyridinium)xylylene tweezers, followed by kinetic trapping of the empty receptor. The obtained macrocycle was found to display a marked pH responsiveness in water, because of an abnormal acidity of the amide protons within its structure. Consequently, and because of the concurrence of rotational isomerism under acidic conditions (fixed at higher pH values), the compound was found to display a dual behavior as a conformationally locked/flexible molecular host, being able to recognize appropriate aromatic substrates, in a lock and key or induced fit fashion, by a conjunction of π–π, C–H···π, and, crucially, the hydrophobic effect. This research was supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO FEDER, Grant CTQ2016-75629-P

The role of the transient atropisomerism and chirality of flurbiprofen unveiled by laser‐ablation rotational spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe combination of atropisomerism and chirality in flurbiprofen is shown to be relevant concerning its pharmacological activity. The two most stable conformers of a total of eight theoretically predicted for each R- or S- flurbiprofen enantiomers have been isolated in the cooling conditions of a supersonic jet and structurally characterized by laser ablation Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The detected conformers, whose structure is mainly defined by three dihedral angles, only differ in the sign of the phenyl torsion angle giving rise to Sa and Ra atropisomers. A comparison with the structures available for the R- and S- enantiomers complexed to COX isoforms reveals that the enzymes select only the Saatropisomers, resulting in a diastereoisomer-specific recognition. The most stable gas phase conformer is exclusively selected when using the S- enantiomer while the second is recognized only for the R- enantiomer. These experimental results highlight the importance of atropisomerism in drug design.Junta de Castilla y León (Grant INFRARED-FEDER IR2020-1-UVa02)Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Grant CTQ2016-75253-P)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Grant PID2021-125207NB-C33

    Hydrogen-Bond Cooperativity in Formamide2–Water: A Model for Water-Mediated Interactions

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe rotational spectrum of formamide2-H2O formed in a supersonic jet has been characterized by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. This adduct provides a simple model of water mediated interaction involving the amide linkages, as occur in protein folding or amide association processes, showing the interplay between self-association and solvation. Mono-substituted 13C, 15N, 18O and 2H isotopologues have been observed to investigate the structure. The adduct forms an almost planar three body sequential cycle. The two formamide molecules link on one side through an N-H···O hydrogen bond and on the other side through a water-mediated interaction with the formation of C=O···H-O and O···H-N hydrogen bonds. The analysis of the quadrupole coupling effects due to the presence of two 14N-nuclei reveal the subtle inductive forces associated to cooperative hydrogen bonding. These forces are involved in the changes detected in the C=O and C-N bond distances with respect to bare formamide.2018-03-03Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (CTQ2013-40717-P)Junta de Castilla y León (programa de apoyo a proyectos de investigación – Ref. Water-Induced Structural Changes in Crown Ethers from Broadband Rotational Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe complexes of 12-crown-4 ether (12C4) with water, generated in a supersonic jet, have been studied using broadband Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Three 1:1 and one 1:2 clusters have been observed and their structures unambiguously identified through the observation of isotopologue spectra. The structures of the clusters are based on networks of O-H···O and C-H···O hydrogen bonds. The most abundant 1:1 cluster is formed from the most stable S4 symmetry conformer of 12C4, even though it is not the energetically favored water complex. Interestingly, the structures of the most stable water cluster and the other remaining observed 1:1 and 1:2 complexes are formed from the third or the fifth most abundant conformers of 12C4. This shows the existence of a mechanism that changes the configuration of 12C4 so that the host-guest interactions can be maximized, even for a “soft” ligand like water.2018-03-03Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (CTQ2013-40717-P)Junta de Castilla y León (programa de apoyo a proyectos de investigación – Ref.
